Rock Your Way To Better Walking with Dr. Todd Martin. Whatever your walking problem, this simple practice can help. Bring your forward heel down and your rear heel up by engaging your core correctly to trigger the heel rocker. Then level out your pelvis for a gentle foot placement using your lower abs. Finish off with a controlled forward lift. Then start the cycle over. This practice will train better posture, low impact foot placement, and a fluid swing through. You will improve the coordination between your upper body and your lower body. Create better body memory that will make your walking more fluid, more confident, and lower impact. You can use this
Mastering this technique will help you reduce back pain, hip, knee, and foot issues. Prevent over-striding, leaning forward, duck feet, anterior pelvic tilt, slouching, and many other common walking problems. All of these walking errors can lead to misalignment of the spine and other joints, eventually resulting in pain. Some people develop pain early in their lives, but some people don't recognize the problem until they are older, and their joints are worn out. So many people end up needing hip and knee replacements, or suffering from chronic back pain, and the cause often is poor walking technique.

If you have balance issues, use your free hand to hold on to something while doing this exercise. Enjoy this video. Help it to get more reach by smashing the like button, sharing, and dropping a comment. Let me know if you have a problem with your walking, and how you recognized it. Did you have an injury, or pain, or did you just realize something was off?

I've been walking badly for a very long time. I have a scoliosis and discs that are compromised in my lumbar spine. I used to do tai chi but always had trouble with any of the kicks and such, and I think in my attempts to find the slightly crouched position that some advocated, I made the anterior tilt worse. I also spent many years commuting sitting on ferries and busses and in stressful meetings. And now at 76 your work is really helping me! My back pain is far less than when I started. I'm not walking like you do, yet. But this particular rocking video seems so simple but accomplishes a LOT! Thanks for all your great work! I finally figured out to go directly to your page here and now I can find stuff easier! The connections to tai chi resonate! Some of the lian gong stuff is valuable as well. (and all the scenery is interesting too!) PS, I asked about shoes, got a pair of the zero barefoot styles, total shock at first wearing, but the second day got better and now I like them. Getting the toes enough room to spread is helping a lot too.)

I find that tightly spaced toes are impeding balance, as well as an old IT band tear, knee replacements, etc. when I walk, I have to constantly coach myself to walk correctly, so I am paying attention to your advice! 78 yrs old, trying to get in at least 5,000 steps per day

I’ve suddenly stopped knowing how to walk correctly. I drag my left foot and it just doesn’t come natural to come upon my toe before I step. I can concentrate on doing it and sometimes manage, but it’s a real struggle. Any suggestions welcome. I’ve watched many of your videos, but I’m making no progress. I recently started thrusting my left knee out and got a very bad injury. 😊Now I’ll watch this one. Thanks you’re appreciated and do a great job explaining, but I just can’t get it for some reason. 74 years old trying to learn to walk again.

Good timing it’s sort of like this is a response to a video put out last night on another channel where the author was advising, beginning the gate cycle with a flexion of the ankle in foot rather than hip flexors, glutes, and bending of the knee- however, based on my comments, the author was unaware of the term Dorsi-flexion. I was wondering if you don’t bend the knee as you had mentioned how are you not going to trip and what would be the concussive forces in the wear and tear on the ankle joint?
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
As to beginning by flexing the ankle, if the suggestion is that you mentally do that, it is incorrect. You don’t creat movement from the bottom up. You create it from the center out. Imagine trying to initiate any movement at your feet and expecting the body to follow. It doesn’t work. As to flexion of the knee, I didn’t say the knee doesn’t flex. Of course the knee flexes, as I demonstrate. I said you don’t try to flex the knee. The knee follows the core as long as you maintain an intention of keeping vertical posture. Your reflexes take care of the rest. You cannot consciously time knee flexion and extension quickly enough to maintain balance, so it must be reflexive. Choice comes at the level of the core.
@michiganhay7844
@michiganhay7844 4 месяца назад
@@ToddMartinMD yeah, that was a mistake. I didn’t mean to write in there as you advised voice dictation comes sometimes goes bad. It was the other author that advised not bending the knee.

@@ToddMartinMD the title is “ a new conception of walking”. Pretty ironic because your latest video is an exact rebuttal to it ; if these movements are all natural movements then you are able to look out in society and actually see some people actually walking correctly. A lot of videos from this channel do promote concepts where you cannot really see it out in the field - people walking naturally - you just have to take it as is without any verification, which seems like it could be anatomically debilitating in some Cases

@ToddMartinMD

In addition to static muscle strengthening, practicing Tai Chi walking can help build better control and coordination of the muscles.

what helps create the dorsi flexion on swing through? I assume it should not be an active ankle motion
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
It is reflexive if you are moving correctly. You don’t need to try.
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
The core motion that triggers the standing up part triggers the dorsiflexion.

Hi Doctor,when pulling up the pelvis to neutral position do you have some degree of contraction in your glute muscle? Is my question
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
During the time you are lowering the forefoot, the glute max is also helping, but you don’t need to do that consciously. The gluteus medius, on the side back of your butt, is working once you are on one leg.

Sir ei pass manual physical therapist name channel is saying .....foot pointing outward for walk 🚶‍♂️?? What's ur opinion sir?? ❤❤❤❤
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
I have seen his video. Normal walking has feet forward. Up to 20 degrees outward is still considered ok. There is a study that shows people with advanced arthritis in the knees may get some relief by turning their feet out some, probably because they are walking incorrectly in the first place which caused the arthritis. But normal gait is feet forward. He sounds a bit crazy with how far he turns his feet out claiming that is normal. My guess is he is duck footed and projecting his normal on other people.

@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
Sorry you hurt yourself. I have been trying to make people aware that the people recommending walking forefoot first are doing that with no evidence at all. If you can stand with your feet together, then you can do this. If your leg size doesn’t allow you to stand with your feet together, that will cause difficulties with your balance. In that case you would need to work on exercises to strengthen yourself. Pool exercises can be very good in that case. Don’t give up.

I find the mechanics of movement interesting, but I'm also amused by the fact that we humans need instruction in how to do the most basic human thing, i.e. walk. I mean, cheetahs don't need instruction on how to run. Giraffes don't need tips on craning their necks. Rabbits don't want tips on gnawing (my poor garden flowers will attest to that!). Humans: an odd species : )
@ToddMartinMD
@ToddMartinMD 4 месяца назад
We are the only animals that can walk on two legs, so it is much more complicated. Also, animals in the wild don't live long enough for their bodies to wear out. Until the modern era, neither did we. I think what is really perplexing is that we don't even pay attention to it, when we obsess about other things, like irrelevant vitamin levels in our blood.
@amandajstar

@@ToddMartinMD Yes. I am constantly amazed at the number of people I see not standing or walking upright, but bent forward at the hip or neck or both. I can't imagine being so unaware of one's own body as to think that normal, or to know it's not but do nothing about it!
