My Mama and I went to see this movie in the theater when it came out. We were openly sobbing during the scene where Allie recognizes Noah, then falls back into her dementia. We could hear a woman behind us crying and sniffling too, while her husband chuckled a bit at all three of us. However, when the movie was over and the lights came up, I caught him wiping his eyes and blowing his nose. He just looked at me, grinning, and said "Not a word". LOL

I think the reason this resonated so strongly when it came out, was because this was the first mainstream romance that celebrated such flawed characters. Not in a comedic way - in a truly selfish, destructive, slightly frustrating way, but you somehow were still rooting for them.

My parents were married 63 years. Mom came down with dementia. It was rough. But, that last year was good with us children (4) going back and forth to take care of her. If you said the word "Mom" when you started the sentence she may not have remembered us, but felt safe. She could not go 3 feet away from my father without looking for him. What made me lose it was when she was ready to got to bed. Dad would get up and slowly walk her to bed. If she fell a sleep on the couch, he'd sleep next to her in the recliner. She died 3 years ago, dad is 90 and still misses her every day. It's heartbreaking.

I think the reason this one is so emotional is because it is so messy. Real life is never perfect. It's full of twist, turns, regrets, mistakes and so much more. In the end we just hope that we are lucky enough to love and be loved. I had this playing in the background while working on wedding invitations and STILL cried.

James Marsden, the guy who plays the fiance she breaks up with? It feels like he always plays THAT guy, when I see him in movies. @RitsychServare

This movie does NOT do any service to those who don't uphold any moral standards. If you've got 'em, keep 'em for the sake of your own dignity. Just because two people are 'madly in love with each other' does not mean they should keep up with sleeping around (thank goodness I was not among the crowd where raging teen hormones were so prevalent... was taught better than that early on). What's worse is that Allie cheated on her husband and after she found out about the letters and realised, wait a minute, I still don't get a future with this guy so she decides to go back to her husband? Not a heroine worthy of any praise for young women out there. I'm just watching the first time this thinking, 'Is this REALLY love? It's so... contentious.' 😤 Not worthy Couples Goals one bit. 👎
@shelldee4173
@shelldee4173 3 года назад
@@RitsychServare Correction. That isn't her husband, it was her fiance. Not condoning cheating, just stating the facts. Not only that. She wasn't sleeping around. She is a virgin all the way up until she has sex with Noah. To be fair, once she reads those letters, the only reason she goes back to her fiance, whom she doesn't even live with, btw, is to do the right thing: confess and break it off. Also, if it weren't for her parents, she would never have moved on. They created a false reality, in which Noah moved on and had most likely died in the war. If she had been allowed the choice, she never would've came to know Mr. COCKY PANTS.

Her ex fiancé was an innocent person who got hurt in the process, but she got with him based on the lie that Noah broke up with her and never tried to reach out again. So i get it. Her ex got it too. They never got the proper closure nor the opportunity to talk bc the mom got in the way (and the dad).

Yeah, i love this movie, I’m not going to lie. But couple goals? Not exactly. I do believe in soulmates, and that’s what I believe Noah and Ali were, but even the best love stories have bumps in the road, and they had major ones. Like, I’m sure that if those letters hadn’t been kept from her, and she knew that he hadn’t given up on her, she never would have moved on like that. Like she said, she waited for seven years, that’s a long ass time, especially in those days when people were expected to marry much younger, and she was already at least 25 by that point, if she was 18 in the beginning. But there’s no such thing as a perfect love story in the real world. And what gets me every time is the scenes with them as an older couple, especially as it starts nearing the end. The fact that he loved her so much that he played a part to read her that book she wrote for him to read her, just for those rare, few lucid moments, even though it crashed and burned every time, and hurt him so much. THAT is the part that IS couple goals for me. Better or worse, in sickness and in health, I will love you. He took those vows seriously. Them dying together was the final dagger to the heart, while sadly beautiful at the same time. Neither of them were suffering in any way anymore, and they were together. Yeah, this movie is a serious rollercoaster. Thanks for doing it, and thanks for being you and keeping it real, regardless of how you were feeling about it. 😊

This movie is not couple goals, or I don't watch and be 'so romantic!' to their youngself, but the old version of them is just always making me sob 2 hours legit.

For me, this movie is in a class of hits own. Somehow, it encapsulates every true heartbreak I've ever had and also the tragedy of getting old and mortality.

Movies like this get me every time, My husband and I have been together since we were 17 yrs old, 35 yrs and 5 kids later we still look at each other the same way as we did as teens. I pray every day something like this never happens to us.😢😭

This movie tore me apart on so many levels, one because I had a history of going back to exes a second time. But ultimately, because my soulmate and I couldnt be together when we were younger. I remember watching this, and couldnt understand why it was affecting me so much. Then, almost 12years ago, we went on our first date as an official couple, and wonderful memories I had apparently blocked of him came flooding back. (During those moments, I remembered this movie...) I had no idea I had blocked out so much from the pain of thinking we would never be together. I think I only watched it 1or2 times, its still too much for me to this day. But, we've been together ever since ❤
