Compost toilets were set up in northern Uganda at Moroto Primary School by GiveLove.org and WeltHungerHilfe.de. This short video shows how the students accepted the new sanitation system. Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com/Humanure-Handb...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com/Compost-Toilet....

@Joe Jenkins You deserve accolades and honours for the selfless work you do on this most elementary facet of life which affects every one of us.

I love the whole humanure concept, but I am becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the kind of "sing praise to the great white savior" theme of the videos. I am sure this is not intentional on the part of Joe Jenkins who I admire as a person. I feel that there is a much better and more humble way of framing this. Composting is a completely natural process that happens all around the world wherever ecosystems are in balance. Bears just shit in the woods. Then composting happens. The problems of sewage and disease are symptoms of a world out of balance, and out of touch with nature. Yes, if you herd populations of humans or animals into an unnatural degree of concentration it will create problems; even systemic problems. I was especially troubled by the videos of your work in introducing toilets into prisons. Not that I have any problem with prisoners having decent toilets! But I am reminded of a couple of relevant comments made by climate activists; A Bishop ( I forget his name, and that is to his credit, because he wanted his MESSAGE to go forward not his NAME. He said... "When I feed the poor they call me a saint.. but when I ask "Why are they poor?" They call me a COMMUNNIST!!!"" Arch-Bishop Desmond Tutu, a hero of the South Afrikan Apartheid revolution said.. and this has stuck with me through my life....."It is not enough to pull drowning people, out of the river. We have to go UPSTREAM and find why they are falling in!!"

Hi John. The kids singing praises to cleanliness and sanitation were taught by black Africans. So I'm not seeing where the "great white savior" is coming from. I just happened to go there and video their spontaneous and unexpected performances. They are proud of their work, and they should be. I am also proud of them.
