I think in the transport industry 90% of the learning as a driver is purely from passing down information from one driver to another. That makes these videos so important, keep doing what you’re doing mate!
It has never been easy to start up as an owner driver. Like you I suffered in the early days, due to irregular work, and the only work I was getting was when a company had to much work that week or month. So the first thing I did was to concentrate on subbing onto just two or three companies and not rushing around trying to get work anywhere. After two years I decided to sign up with a big European Haulier LKW Walter. OK not the best rates but I never had any down time and that kept me going, whilst all the time looking for a better opportunity. As I gained more contacts things did get better and regular work was forthcoming most of the time. I also made the decision not to expand and just run my truck. You will make it work as you have the right work ethic and you love what you do.
I run 8 artics, and during covid, I was doing exceptionally well. At the moment, it's normal i have a day rate target as long as I reach that I am happy.
I was doing removals for the Army all over Germany, so I know how much of a pain the BAG vans are and how they try to find the tiniest thing. Totally agree with you when it comes to the autostop facilities, top notch and spotless. As for over night parking, we were lucky in that we had contacts with other removal firms as to locations to park up over night but 99 percent of the time we parked in little towns for the food and drink.

I used to pull a race trailer sort of like that but I spent $8.00 to install 2 door clips and any time I had clearance questions, I simply opened the rear doors and clipped them up to the trailer wall. Never had any issues after.

Sometimes not expanding is the best decision you can make as a small business owner. One less headache. I promised myself to only expand to another truck once I have a more reliable regular client minimum 5 days a week otherwise it's too much of a gamble. @DVR would agree😊
The madest thing ive ever done is woke up in morning stood on my glasses realy broken bad i couldnt see to drive or even walk . my spaire were in my other truck. I was near dyjon or chamberry ,So i walked the truck park blind and asked every driver who wore glasses can i try your specs please ,i found a sweedish guy same bad eyes as me. I gave him £30 euros for his spair set. i still have them .
I know what you mean was doing the same but with 3.5ton sprinter van and once you start breaking things down your right not much left but hope you keep going because it’s great doing European work

Have you ever got back to UK and nearly gone to right round a roundabout not left .ive nearly done it at ashford .And i loved it getting sent to Europe on a wednesday when its bank holiday weekend in Europe 12pm thursday night untill a 10pm monday night ,Berlin parked up i loved it free Holiday .
