here is what I love the most about the gh6: since so many people switched to the gh6 the prices for used gh5 models dropped massively. I recently grabbed one for only a few hundred bucks.
Yup. Soon as the GH6 came out i was excited knowing there would be a gh5 price drop. Since i have bought mine its been really good. Im sure ill get the GH6 eventually but for now the GH5 does everything i need and more.
I think the trouble with the GH6 is a lot of people got bored waiting for it to be released and switched from the GH5 to the S5 - and are very happy with the S5 quality, even if it lacks features the GH6 has.
I think that what’s happened to, GH5 owner went to the baby S1H aka. S5. But for me MFT 4/3’s is still the best system for its small size, adapting optics and features. In 22/23 competitors still don’t have shutter angle, C4K, Vectors scopes, Anamorphic or any other video centric feature in there mirror less camera lineup. As for the competition like Sony, it’s a no go for me, don’t like Color science and menus layouts, it takes to long find what I want. LUMIX system have approx, 50 custom functions buttons, both digital and physically, and that are a key user case for video and hybrid work. At the end of day I ask myself what do get if switch/upgrade. The new features of the GH6 still don’t make sense to me as GH5/GH5S owner? What new features convinces me to switch? SSD recording is feature, but I have a Ninja V for monitoring and recording, so ProRes internally isn’t that big of feature YT review’s say, as it’s still expensive to record internally.
I was between the GH5MII and the GH6. Chose the GH5MII. The GH6 is absolutely amazing but its sensor has its flaws and preferred to play it safe. I loved them. I bought four. New are dirt cheap. Looking forward for the next GH of the lineup as I think is going to be brutal.

Man I would love the GH6 it looks so good. But the cost to upgrade to new memory cards, new batteries just adds to much of a cost for me. I think the GH5 II would be a great upgrade as you get 10 bit 4:2:0 60fps, faster auto focus, new venus engine, Vlog L pre-installed and you can use your old batteries and memory cards just makes it such a great deal. Would love to see what Lumix does with the next G9 though...
My team have been using GH5 for a year or so. Jumped ahead and sold 2 units for 1x gh6 and it was the best decision. So far we've been shooting on Cine D with DR boost ON, the vintage Tokina ATX pro 28-70 f2.8 Nikon Mount, Viltrox speed booster Nikon to MFT and Samyang 85mm F1.5 cine.
Caleb, always enjoy your videos. Great, realistic and practical info from actual user. I have to say thought, the lighting and color on your last two videos is just stellar. This is the best looking "talking" head setup on RU-vid, IMHO. Keep up the great work and content. Looking forward to the next one.
Coming from Canon. I decided to get the gh5 over the gh6, because it's still a video shooting beast compared to other DSLRs. Right now this camera pretty cheap on eBay with accessories.
I did the same thing and am utterly blown away by what the GH5 can do and all the possibilities on it. It's the perfect camera for someone who wants to learn all the nitty gritty of both photography and cinematography and for a price that allows for mistakes or isn't a big loss if I find out this hobby isn't for me. What I didn't know is how easy it is to use and how much better it is than anything Canon I owned back in the 2000s. Blows me away that I paid about the same on eBay ($600) for what I paid in the 2000s for a Rebel that I just couldn't get to do anything right.
I’m a proud owner of the GH5 AND GH5S and I use my cameras for hybrid shooting. The GH5’s 6k mode that allows custom photo setting’s are awesome for “creative/art” video creation with the pre-record function, it’s a key feature for me, and it’s out of the GH6. So for now l’ll use setup as have it. BUT you never know….
A straight up user's review. Recent rebates on the GH6 were tempting, but my G9 will continue to be my goto camera until PDAF arrives! Waiting and watching for your review👍
I have both and you are probably right, absolutely nothing beats the G9 after all the firmware updates. It is still an absolute joy to use. If it would have anamorphice mode built in, I would sell the GH6 instantly.
The GH6s biggest flaw for me was that fan, it makes the camera too big and bulky. Compared to the G9 or the OM-1 or even the S5, its just too chunky. If they release a GH6II without the fan, that would be stellar.

The question I asked myself is do i need? So with the GH6 its do I need 4k 100fps? Do I need 300fps in FHD? Do i need to shoot in pro res ? The new Cards needed for the Gh6 starts from £130 upwards. It also has no battry grip so unable to have extra battry life. The answer lead me to hold on to my GH5 as it has everything I need. Ill be sticking with the GH5 and prob adding a full frame camera to my gear and thats will be my set up for a while
Hi Caleb, txs again for this great video. I have purchased a GH6. After 3 months I am thinking (well inside me, I have already decided ... :-) ) to sell my GH5 and buy a second GH6 body. By the way I love your colormanagement. Your LUTs are great! Some things I would like to ask you as a very experienced GH5/6 user about timecode. I have not found any information about the precision of the GH5 and GH6 internal timecode generator. Let's say I have two GH5 (GH5 and GH5s) if I sync both of them using Lumix Image App geo tagging. After what duration would timecode between both devices run appart? You would have such experience? I would expect that these timecode generators must be quite precise. Perhaps not as precise as a Tentacle or Atomos Sync (apprx. 15h) but good enough for min. 5 to 6 hours? Would you have such experience? Furtheron, did you realize that LUMIX Image App does not sync with the GH6? I used this app to sync timecode with mobile network time via geo tagging. The new Panasonic Sync App on the other hand does not allow to sync timecode with mobile network via geo tagging. (funnily it looses sense to be called Sync App ... ;-) ) With this strategy Panasonic is pushing their users to invest into expensive timecode devices - which is unnecessary if they would stick to Lumix Image App (or extend Lumix Sync App).
I think all of you should use the camera that suits your needs. GH6 is nice, but so it the GH5, s5, Sony FX3, A7SIII. You create on a handheld camcorder 4k in 2023. I personally believe you should wait until Panny announced the next road map. I think the next GH will kill all the hyped brands, especially if the beef up the AF.
Jumped on the GH6 the moment it came out and haven't looked back. Still use myGH5s for b-cam, but, with the exception of low-light, everything was just too much of a step forward in the GH6.
Thanks for the video! Am myself for a long time a GH5 fimer. I would be interested to know if in Open Gate mode the HDMI output also works during the record. Unfortunately, this is not possible with the GH5.
Ok should I spend money on the 25mm f 1.4 mkII and the 9 mm f1.7 or the new 12-35mm f2.8 Leica MFT lens I have the 12-60 3.5-5.6 mm weather sealed kit lens and the 15mm, 20mm, 25mm and 42.5 mm f1.7 lens and gave away my 25mm f1.4 1st gen. Primarily video of interviews and b-roll with a G9 and GH5 mkII But in a pinch I get conned into portraiture. I use my Leica 35-100mm f2.8 mkII for pro sports b-roll of ADHD athletes as well as the very underrated 45-175 f3.5-5.6 internal power zoom lens, with its 46mm filter thread . I can press the latter against chain linked fencing during spring training and still get the shot.
Of course, now is the time to switch to the GH6. If you work with it and earn money, you can certainly switch to the better tool. You can keep the gh5.
The problem is that I bought the gh5 watching your videos a while ago and when I had 2 weeks with it, you said that you changed to S5 because of the updates. Now you say all this, basically I bought a camera that I will have to change because according to you it is obsolete.
They always say something isn’t great anymore. I bought gh5m2 now I’m also thinking of returning it and getting the gh6 but it has a couple of cons too. 😅 I heard gh6 had streaking issues that was why I went with gh5m2 instead.

Make use of what you have now. You’d be surprised by what you can create. I’ve seen amazing content from people who still use a GH4.
Hi Caleb, I have a GH6 for a while and I'm having a lot problems with the VLOG image.. I have so much grain on the shadows on mine.. Tried a lot of situations and I can't have a clean image on shadows in any ISO... I see your videos and I wonder if you ever had any problems with it.. I struggling to get god images on it.. and I'm very frustrated with this camera.. do you have any tips for me? thanks!
@@hcrespo3 not yet.. I was in contact with Panasonic and they told me to send the camera to warranty.. the last time I used Panasonic's warranty they kept my camera for 3 months.. idk what to do...
Thanks Caleb! I am very tempted by GH6, however am torn between GH6 and S5, mainly because the stills capabilities of S5 are on another level. For video I still find myself reaching for the GH5, especially in run and gun or daylight situations, and GH6 seems to be the natural evolution from there. What would you suggest?
For me two things would justify a switch between gh5 and a new model: dual iso and phase detection. There is neither.. If you have the gh5 either waste your money or await the gh7

When a camera is so amazing it feels tough to let it go even when you have a better camera. The G9 is that camera that I just can’t let go of, even though I have a Sony A7iv.
@@andersistbesser yeah it doesn't really make sense. The Sony is a better camera in nearly every way, but I love shooting with the G9. Feels better in the hand than any camera I've ever used. But don't get me wrong. I love the A7iv
