Tip: regarding your door lock being stuck shut. I have an '83 4 W.D. Pickup, SR-5 Longbed. The door pull on the outside, can get stuck in the up position if the truck sits for awhile. This keeps the mechanism from opening.Spray a little WD-40 on the door latch's little hinges. You can see them if you look underneath the latch. Yes, the simplicity of these Trucks is awesome! An 8, 10, 12, 14, 17, 19, maybe even a 22mm socket will allow you to pull the motor and trans. The body steel is a bit thin, but the steel boxed frame is stout, provided it usn't rusted out. Love these solid front axle Toyotas! Good luck with!
Dude, I think you have my old truck. If that paint is pearl blue metallic, I sprayed that on it in the early 1990s. If there is green zinc chromate primer that can be seen near any paint chips, that is 100% my old one.

I am not sure about the first generation hilux beds; however, my 1984 pickup has similar rust issues in the bed which I traced to the seam sealer used by Toyota to seal the bed. Due to its age in tandem with the quality of what I take to be urethane I have found that it traps moisture against the bed and body panels, disallowing drying and promoting an oxidative reaction. In addition, Toyota used a very low or non existent percentage of alloys such as magnesium, chromium or tin to prevent rust and add strength. Instead it is almost purely carbon steel, which when exposed to the constant presence of water rusts quite rapidly. In order to halt this process, I used a 3/4” chisel and rubber mallet to lightly chisel out all the seam sealer. In doing so I revealed a greater degree of rust than I had anticipated, which was hidden solely beneath the seam sealer. To halt the further progression of oxidation on what is a relatively intact bed, I used phosphoric acid to strip the oxygen from iron and bond phosphorus to it, thereby creating iron iii phosphate, a hard and relatively dark material resistant to flaking and the penetration of water. In addition, a coat of sealer such as paint or a finish coat is highly recommended so as to keep the water from coming into contact with the steel. These old trucks are fun to work on and mob around in; however, they have issues which can be very trying and possess a tendency to be difficult to locate parts for... also acrylic enamel is fun. Tan interiors are where it’s at! Out of curiosity, has your truck had any transmission work performed? As an axiom it is common that the old l series cast iron case transmissions (l-52 & l-54) and corresponding g series aluminum case transmissions (g-52 & g-54) are relatively weak, and have a propensity for wearing out input shaft and main shaft intermediate bearings as well as synchronisers for first, second and third gears. Having bought a truck with a recently rebuilt g series transmission, I can attest to this axiomatic rule of thumb. It is interesting that these two transmissions share their internals, such as the input shaft and bearings, countershaft, counter gears and main shaft plus gear train.
Thanks for all the information it’s much appreciated! I’ll be sure to look back on it when I get it painted here in the next two months! I’m not sure if my transmission has been rebuilt. This 83 has so many stories that will never be told unfortunately. It runs fairly well especially after a shifter bushing replacement but I’ll have to check up on the internals after I remove it from the truck in the near future.

I have a 1983 Toyota 4x4 pick up exactly the same as the one you show. I'm no mechanic. My good friend Norm was, but he passed away last thanksgiving. When he died we were very close to getting the truck on the road. It runs really smooth feeding the after market Webber manually. The tanks been cleaned, sending unit replaced, lines blown out, new filters, new fuel pump. Still won't pull fuel from the tank. Any ideas?
