My Bike Was Stolen... Quick Lock Tips

Hi guys! I'm sad to report that my bicycle was stolen recently when a thief cut through a cable and folding ABUS lightweight lock. It was in a secure garage in Vancouver, BC Canada but I also found out that my friend Marc's shop in California called Electric Bikes of Corona Del Mar got broken into and they lost an ebike. My Mom had her garage broken into, and my other friend in San Francisco also had his house broken into where tools were stolen. Long story short, I'm posting this video as a reminder to keep an eye out and consider upgrading to a more sturdy high-rated lock. Some of the locks can become very expensive, but it's almost always cheaper than replacing a bicycle.

My ebike was stolen off the front of my house overnight. Luckily, a neighbor to the thief saw my craigslist post about my missing bike and they reported it to the police. It's just not right that people feel the need to take someone else's property, especially during these times. Thank you for this video!

Yes… nonsense…. Compassion is a good thing but excusing theft is lame. 🙄 These are not folks stealing to feed their kids or needing a bike to get to work. Come on. This was organized and brazen. When there’s no consequences to taking other peoples property people will begin to feel it’s their right. Pretty soon dopey people will let thieves steal under a certain amount and not make it a crime if this kind of bleeding heart liberalism catches on… ooops they did just that …. In this day following this pandemic time. Who’d a thunk it. 🙄

I'd recommend getting an alarm disc brake lock as well as a heavy duty chain, alarms draw attention that thieves don't want. I have two stainless steel alarm disk break locks that are the front and back plus a Kryptonite magnesium alloy 13mm hex link chain. Like you said the chain is harder to cut with a grinder but it's vulnerable to bolt cutters so you want something to take the mechanical advantage away. The hexagonal shape of the links distributes the pressure, while the alloy and large gauge all combine to make that harder to do without a massive set of bolt cutters. But as you mentioned if there's a will there's a way, all you can do is put more obstacles in their path. Glad you're doing well and it wasn't a really expensive bike though it still sucks to have happen to you. Keep up the great work!
@beyondfossil

I whole-heartedly agree on the disc rotor lock with super loud motion activated alarm. Had Court had that, perhaps the entire lot of bikes stolen might have been saved by spooking off the thieves! These rotor locks are relatively inexpensive and compact too -- two additional wins for this type of lock.

Number ONE. Never leave an expensive bike unattended for longer than it will take to steal it. If you make it EASY its gonna be gone. Punk 3 skunk locks on your bike. And a tracker or two. And you will make the lowlifes life very uncomfortable. The whole reason people do wrong is because they think they will get away with it. It's not like people who steal bikes are doing it to screw you over. They are doing it out of desperation, because they too need transportation and unfortunately our society is not based around peoples needs but rather corporate greed. The owning class, those who control our society, are unforgivable. No one should feel so desperate that they feel the need to steal from others just to survive
@TonyByte
@TonyByte Год назад
@@canadiansmarties Different motivations exist for stealing; it's not solely about survival, and many thefts aren't driven by survival needs. Some people steal out of greed or because they don't want to work. In high crime areas, others steal for entertainment and unneeded luxury items. There are those who don't understand the consequences and steal impulsively or treat it like a sport. As someone who lives in a high crime city and communicates with these people, I can attest to the variety of reasons for theft. I could give several more. Ultimately, suggesting that bikes are stolen purely out of desperation and survival needs, or tying all of it to corporate greed, is simply narrow, oversimplified, and not true.
@UhOhUmm

@@UhOhUmm you can think what you want but I don't see people risking jail time for an income as anything but desperation. Unlike the cartoons most "bad guys" aren't doing it for fun or because they enjoy making others suffer. I'm not saying it's justified or ok that they do so just that if you want to understand why people commit crime and how to stop it you have to address the root of the issue which is poverty, mental health, addiction, desperation in a system that lets people suffer constantly. We need societal change with supports for those in need if we want to truly address crime

I don't, as its the root of the problem. People like him vote bleeding hearts that empty the jails and are pro-criminals teaching them that there are no real negative consequences for crime putting the risk to reward ratio so far in their favor. So crime increases, and they just shrug their shoulders and go "I don't understand why". Google Singapore crime rate, and you'll see its virtually non-existent here and part of that is thanks to things like mandatory death penalty for drug dealers with over a 99% conviction rate and under one year execution of sentencing, with strict immigration policy, very well funded mostly plain-clothes police force ready to jump into action, and a population that is extremely anti-crime and will turn in any criminals to guarantee no one can have a career as a criminal in Singapore unlike in blue cities in the US where the lawmakers even want to give felons the right to vote since they know the felons will vote for them. 😡

I returned it and ordered the Abus Bordo 6500, a much heavier duty folding lock. It's rated as Gold by Sold Secure, and has thicker hardened steel bars. I just recently got an Abus Granite X-Plus 540 U-lock rated Diamond Level. It's pretty secure and "only" weighs 3.2 lbs. Of course now I recently read about the new Hiploc D1000 U-lock that is supposed to be angle grinder resistant. It's rated as Motorcycle Diamond (a new category); and retails for $345 U.S. I guess it was so popular that it's been sold out for a while.

Sucks to hear about the thievery. I'm on my 4th bike in the last 10 years, so not so bad, especially for living in Brooklyn. It appears that the longer the bike is stored, the higher the chance of theft, so a quick walk into the grocery store is usually safe after locking up decently, but overnight storage is waaaay riskier. My GF and I actually had both our bikes stolen together overnight. The thief unscrewed the parking sign (the bolts were by the curb) and slid the bikes up and over the top of the sign post. Not sure how they got up that high, but it happened. It would be great if the NYC police had a "bike sting month" and set up operations around the city catching thieves and canning their @ss in jail for at least 30 days.

I wonder: did that bike in the video with the big covered chain get passed over when yours and others were taken? Is that the current go-to for high security? It looked like that was the only lock not broken and on the ground. I keep my ebike inside, but my main concern is going in to a grocery or other store where it is out of sight for 5 or 10 minutes. eBikes are magnets for thieves, so I guess i have to carry a heavy lock any time I plan on the bike being out of sight for even a few minutes. Sigh. EDIT: Lock picking lawyer reviews that lock and notes that is the "lowest security rating of all Abus locks at 7." And btw, someone who breaks through bars like that and then steals a number of bikes is a professional thief--not someone having "hard times" and "might be able to use it."

I live in Vancouver as well, specifically in Vancouver East, so it's a very rough area near the Downtown Eastside. I just bought an ebike, so I'm particularly concerned about security. I will be keeping it inside the house, but I will be commuting to the East Broadway Skytrain, for those familiar (a busy transit hub). What brand/model bike locks do you recommend? I plan on having two locks, a secondary frame lock (cafe lock), and a primary heavy duty lock. I heard Foldylocks are better than the ABUS Bordo 6000 folding lock, but maybe a Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit U-Locks might be better? I heard chain locks are good, but cumbersome and heavy to carry around. Recommendations?
@ElysianFields-nv7wq
@ElysianFields-nv7wq 2 года назад
I live in that area, too. For good locks, I recommend getting on the waiting list for the Hiplok D1000 (check out their website to learn why it's a really good lock--or so they say anyway). There's been good reviews from people who test locks of the Abus Granit extreme 59 260mm (31cm/12" or bigger) and the Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit Chain 1415 & New York Disc Lock. Even the higher quality folding locks have been shown to be pretty easy to defeat but could work as an another layer. Added locks could be something like the YOHOOLYO Disc Lock Alarm if you have disk brakes, an Abus (level 9) or other strong frame lock/cafe lock like you've mentioned, a hand brake lock, quick-release pedals (you can't ride off with a bike without pedals) and take the seat and/or front wheel off or use locking skewers. Make sure to check what you're locking to that it's fixed to the ground and isn't hiding that it's been cut. I've seen this many times, especially end pieces of the coil type public bike lock stands (the bolts get removed) and the stands that have the thin triangles to lock to because they're easy to cut.

This is sad. I had a scooter stolen years ago that was parked and locked right under a security camera at our apartment complex. Fast forward to today and I just bought a RadCity5 Plus and don't take chances. I keep it inside my apartment. I want to be able to go gracery shopping and up to the college soon though which will mean I have to leave it unattended. I just bought a ABUS Bordo X-Plus 6500 folding lock and a separate Wdscam bike alarm but still won't feel entirely comfortable until I get a wire lock for my wheels and another thick primary lock so that I have 2 primary locks. Sounds like overkill but I can't afford to buy a bike like this again anytime soon. I wonder if getting a thick chain lock or high end U lock would work better as a secondary to the ABUS folding lock I have. I plan to this use them side by side so hopefully a thief would need to have two different types of tools and a larger chuck of time to steal my bike.

That's my nightmare! Sorry you had that happen. Didn't realise you were in Vancouver, cool that you're local! You really get around to do your reviews! There are so few options in the Lower Mainland for electric bike servicing - if they don't sell your brand of motor they won't touch anything on the bike, even if it has nothing to do with electronics. I have to get my trike serviced at the shop in Richmond even though I live in PoCo. They pick up and deliver, but it turns a simple tune up into a $250 expense.

Yeah, it's terrible in Vancouver. I see reddit posts about people doing it pretty brazenly with body guards and then chopping the bikes out in the open. I like that police here are pretty friendly and non violent, but I also want property to be protected. I waited on hold for over an hour to file the police report, so they must have their hands full right now.

@@ElectricBikeReview @ElectricBikeReview.com its crazy how bad its getting. My team and I helped a customer recover and rebuild his Stromer st3 after it was stolen. Then a week later I was on my way to the store (amego) saw a guy cutting the locks on 2 ncms so I chased him away and brought the 2 bikes to the shop and contacted the owner through a Serial number search. Very sorry about the robbery! I've been very fortunate, only had my pump stolen off my bike frame, then forgot the new replacement in a shopping cart, and the same model pump fell off the clip and a car ran over it before I could retrieve it ha! (three $45 pumps!) I have the u-bolt type of lock that is good. Is that the same Abus folding lock they sell with the Reise & Muller electric bikes? I might get a R&M and wondering if I should get a lock better than that one. You have a Zen way about you with the robbery, like you still find some kind of peace or balance... Folding locks (even the high end ones) are also vulnerable to nut splitters. Don't know how often this method is used in the wild, but this method makes minimal noise compared to an angle grinder so I wouldn't trust one of those.

That's a really great suggestion that I hadn't thought of. I don't know how many people were involved, because several bikes went missing each time. Maybe they targeted specific bikes (there was an older one next to mine that was not even locked, and they left it). Perhaps this would discourage riding away... but it's also a dirty inconvenience and it makes riding less fun each time. I feel like we lose more than just our bikes with stuff like this, we also lose our interest in cycling and our freedom to move freely. It sucks.

why not go for the cheapest bike that you would be okay commuting on? Maybe even used and rat it out a little so it is less attractive to steal. It's just what I would do if I live in an area where bike thefts were likely. You need a decent alarm for your home and bike, Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical factor!

The problem with the mega locks is weight. I bought the kryptonite forgetabout it lock, its 14lbs. 14 additional lbs on a bike might as well be 30 in feel. Even an ebike you feel wherever the lock is with every corner or maneuver. I guess thats better than theft, but I personally like the enjoy the experience as well as get there.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 3 года назад
You're correct, there's a noticeable trade-off with most of the premium locks. I was focused on price, but weight is usually a big factor as well. I'm not a huge heavy guy, so the increased weight is proportionally greater and does impact my riding and enjoyment too. I usually keep my bikes inside whenever I can, behind a real security system... but not everyone has that option or the space (or the supportive significant other, lol). Thanks for the input!
