I feel like gatekeeping in lolita is often misidentified by non lolitas. Gatekeeping is FOR SURE real. Every now and then I'll come across some disgusting racism, fatphobia, etc. The community definitely has been getting a lot more accepting recently, which is amazing! But obviously those awful comments still happen. However, non lolitas often call things gatekeeping when they're NOWHERE similar to these actual problems. They'll buy a sexy maid dress or something and call it lolita, then if people say it's not, they call all lolitas rude elitist gatekeepers. I definitely don't condone bullying and want to make sure beginners have the resources they need, but it can be really annoying to have someone compare wearing some amazon cosplay to actual serious problems this community has with gatekeeping.

Gatekeeping is a good thing. Obviously not letting people in based on race is not cool, but... without some gatekeeping then anything is lolita. If it can be anything then it's nothing. More communities need to value gatekeeping in order to avoid self destruction.

as a chinese person, I think anyone can wear wa or qi (pronounced like chee, not key) lolita as long as they're respectful towards the culture and not wear it in a "haha this is asian weeaboo clothes" sort of way 🤠👍 as for gatekeeping, I think normies/people who don't actually wear lolita fashion, they might think we're gatekeeping when it's just that lolita fashion has many 'rules', like keeping the silhouette and keeping a coord balanced. they might also see a frilly maid costume and not realise that lolita fashion pieces have much better construction 🤔

I think some styles of demonia work with old school lolita, gothic lolita and punk lolita. The gothika-09 and Dolly-01 styles are popular with old school lolita and look identical to some of the commonly worn shoe styles of the era. I feel like people tend to forget that demonias have so many kinds of shoes, I feel like a lot of the Mary Jane kinda styles they put out would be nice for sweet lolita. They also have a couple pink ones I have in mind that I feel like would be cute. Idk I know you're not saying this in your comment, so this isn't like directed towards you I'm just tired of people like being uneducated and generalizing something like this (not just demonias, but people in the community tend to view platforms in this sorta style like this in general) because I think viewing an entire brand or style of shoe and saying it "wouldn't fit in sweet lolita" is both limiting and also silly. There's a million styles of platforms that would fit in this style you just need to find them
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 2 года назад
@@HolisticCupid A lot of people simply don't know because they've never checked. A lot of people who are fairly new to the fashion see how easy it is to buy from shoe brands that specifically cater to lolitas, and who offer shoes in nearly every color and size, that they don't look outside of these brands. People with larger shoe sizes or who were there before what I shall refer to as the taobao boom are more likely to know about non-lolita-specific alt brands that sell lolita appropriate shoes. As for demonias and contemporary sweet lolita; according to a local website Demonia has 485 styles for sale (that's a lot of shoes) and I did browse them all not so long ago. There were non that I noticed that would fit as a cookie cutter contemporary sweet shoe imo but if you're going for something a little less cookie cutter they do have some.

Gatekeeping discussion is so overdone at this point, we should finally move on to way bigger problems in lolita community like ableism and US-centrism. Like i know it's probably harsh but we shouldn't bother this much with potenial lolitas and focus on actual ones that faces many problems to be yet disscued on same level as gatekeeping that is not even that bad. Fact that in 2022 we still argue whatever people "should be allowed" to wear comfy shoes with lolita is good prove that we have bigger problem than non-lolitas feeling gatekept.
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118
@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 2 года назад
What are people saying about comfortable shoes? Is it the same old dead horse again or did something new happen? Being able to walk well should take priority over style imo, and that does sometimes mean style is sacrificed if that person cannot find comfortable lolita appropriate shoes or if they cannot make lolita appropriate shoes comfortable (inserts, stretching shoes, removing the extra footbed for extra room, etc). I'm sure it has happened that someone gave criticism to someone who had no other option than to wear orthopaedic shoes. I haven't seen that happen though. Some people don't try though and a lot of lolitas think that's annoying which I think is understandable. I also think that other lolitas don't owe it to the community to have perfect coords or to try to strive for that, so even if we're annoyed we should be able to scroll past it.

I just released a sweet ouji coord and everyone that contacted me wanted plus size. The only reason plus sizes weren't included immediately is because I was worried nobody would even want the outfit and it takes an extra year of study to learn how to scale patterns for plus size as the body shape and proportions change around 12ish and it's just really hard to figure out. Almost there, hoping to be very inclusive, just trying to fit that in with kids and school and my business is rough. Bigger brands can absolutely afford to outsource their pattern grading or hire a grader though, which I will absolutely do as soon as I can afford to :) idk if that cleared anything up?
@oliveoconnor5589

I feel this pressure on small brands to include each and everyone is really harmful. I understand it can be tricky for brands when attempting to make a size inclusive pattern to be suitable to all, and there's a reason most size-inclusive brands do custom measurements instead of off-the-rack stuff, so it's not just down to grading patterns one time necessarily 🤔

I highly encourage Lolita’s to try Qi Lolita. I can’t speak for Wa Lolita but Qi Lolita is inspired off of the Qi Pao. Which actually isn’t as “traditional” as one might think. The dress was created on the 1920’s in Shanghai and was meant to be an alternative to the restrictive clothing that woman had to wear Qing Dynasty. Once this Dynasty fell working woman wanted something that had less layers and wasn’t restrictive. Tailors in Shanghai created the Qi Pao off of dresses from the west that were shown in fashion magazines. So the dress originated from cultural appreciation and a mixing of cultures! It also has no deep religious or cultural significance and many Chinese people love it when people wear Qi-Pao!

My big lolita Hot Take(tm) is that the community got so scarred and burned by all the "haha wow isn't that a fetish? you mean like the book?" treatment from people outside the community, that a huge swathe of the community swung too far the other way straight into sex negativity and slut-shaming. I have seen some astonishingly bad behaviour around this.

Where did you see this? I'm curious about the circumstances/context because the outfits themselves (with the exception of ero lolita, which isn't really that revealing anyway) aren't sexual or fetish-y, nor are the online community spaces themselves, so I don't know how that would end in slut shaming. Unless someone broke community rules, but criticising that also doesn't have to be slut shaming.. I'm seriously confused.

@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 So I think you might have conflated the two portions of my statement, which were "people outside the community often accuse/assume lolita to be a fetish thing" and "people within the community got so hyper-defensive about these accusations that they swung too far the other way". It has been a problem for lolita fashion from pretty much the beginning that people outside the community hear "lolita" and instantly their minds jump to Nabokov's novel of the same name, despite there being absolutely no relation. Between surface-level knowledge of the book's plot, and the fact that lolita is easily described as "childlike" in its aesthetics, non-community members assume the worst about the fashion. Because of this, lolitas - both individually and as a community - have had to spend a LOT of time explaining to people "no it's not a fetish, it's a fashion style just like punk or goth or anything else, and it's DEFINITELY not about child predators jesus christ". This is a completely understandable thing to get distressed about. I've had to have this argument literally two weeks ago. However, this constant situation of having to be on the defensive, having to be ready for people to assume horrible things about you, has lead to people getting... pre-emptive, shall we say. Many people in the community will grab their pitchforks if someone mentions anything even remotely "sexual" in the context of lolita. I've seen people get crucified for wearing a spiked collar with their punk co-ords because OMG THAT'S A KINK THING HOW DARE YOU. This isn't something you can really provide direct links to because it's both insular and can very often be subtle. I've seen some pretty Big Name Lolitas (in the English-speaking sphere, of course, I can't speak at all for the Japanese community) be very nasty regarding this. I know this was an overly-long reply, but it's a situation with a lot of nuance to it with a few contributing factors.

@@PepsiObsessi Online lolita spaces aren't sex talk friendly and kink friendly anyway, so I don't know where OP gets the sex negativity and slut shaming idea from when kink and sex aren't appropriate topics of discussion anyway. I'm eagerly waiting for Electrosa to supply some examples of situations of slut shaming and sex negativity in the lolita community.
@PepsiObsessi
@PepsiObsessi 2 года назад
@@Electrosa first of all yes that is an overly-long reply for one of the biggest common denominators of being a lolita especially on a video by a channel that brings it up probably at least every six months. I wasn’t confused about anything. Sexualizing lolita at all is weird in the first place, calling people who are upset when it’s sexualized “sex-negative” is weirder- if an individual lolita is fine with it whatever, but strangers in or out of the community being obnoxious at best and creepy or harassing at worst to somebody because of what they’re wearing, surprise, is not. I wouldn’t want a stranger assuming or implying or approaching me to talk about sex it at all in any other clothes, much less when I’m dressed like that. I’ve been into lolita for over half my life now and I’ve never seen “slut-shaming” when it comes to this, only people putting up boundaries and being upset when they aren’t respected or rightfully angry when they’re outright accused of being fetishistic, regressive for women, or even pedophillic. This isn’t hard, or misogyny, or “sex-negative”. It is normal.

I have a pair of pink demonias that look like mary janes and has cute little heart locks on the ankle strap. Im also interested in A LOT of other fashions but i will wear sweatpants and sweatshirts 90% of the time. im also iffy on the traditional asian inspired lolita just because i don't want to be rude, but i do own an alice in wonderland inspired hanbock that was on devilinspired. but i need to find a different blouse for it because long arms.~ and just saying i bought it because it doesn't look super traditional because the dress is more of a jumper skirt where the skirt meets with the band that's at the bust. Sometimes i wish youtube would allow pictures to be shared in comments lol.

I bought a pair of black shiny mary jane platform shoes to go with a moitie jsk and other gothic dresses. I have a large foot and demonia was able to accomodate my size. Also, walking in rocking horse shoes hasnt been safe for my ankles in the past so the "clunky shoe" look worked fine by substituting the demonia MJ's. :) Im not a sweet lolita, so honestly I dont have an opinion on how pink demonias could or couldnt work. 😀

Interestingly, I find that the people that have the most issue with someone wearing Ki and Wa lolita are not people from Chinese or Japanese backgrounds. I've been told over and over again that many Asian cultures find it flattering seeing people take interest in their culture-so long as it isn't in a cringy, fetishizing, or rude manner. (Also, so long as the foreigner isn't claiming the culture as their own.) Of course, the opinion changes from person to person, but that is what I've found over the years.

Demonia shoes can be nearly identical to some Lolita shoes from early 2000s so i dont see why they would not go together with gothic/punk or oldschool coordinate. i have a few pairs myself and i love them. sure, they would be more difficult to match with sweet coord but we are talking about Lolita fashion in general and not just sweet Lolita.

I LOVE Demonia boots with Lolita! For me, it's the contrast. I love the look of cute, soft dresses with edgy platform boots & a spiked collar. It's combining both my fav styles into one "vibe". I also do wear those looks separately as well, but together, there's just something perfect about it, at least for me.

It's really funny how you opened the video with your opinion on Demonia's platforms (which is a valid opinion to have, btw), when I've been meaning to get a pair for ages now. I think they can work in lolita specifically *because* of the contrast between the chunky platform and delicate frills. They look particularly cute with oldschool for the same reasons RHS do, but I've seen a few people coord their pink platforms with 2010 era sweet lolita and they look fantastic there too.

I feel like I could like demonia knee highs in a sweet coord but that may just be because I personally enjoy adding a bit of edge to my pastels. I’m in this camp of loving gothic silhouettes and motifs but not actually liking to wear dark colors the majority of the time. Basically pastel goth but without even having the black to contrast the pastel (just wash me out completely). That said, I’ve never actually done a coord that way - I really tend more towards Classic, princess-y patterns and motifs when it come to lolita

I don't wear lolita myself, though I have a friend who does and I've personally really liked the style for some time and would like to try it at some point. Regarding the first opinion about the Demonias...rather than disagreeing with you I just hate the way you worded it? I think if you did just pure sweet lolita with no punk or other style additions to it it would look a bit odd but I feel like with sweet lolita you could potentially style it in a way that works, and it doesn't look disjointed with all styles imo. About gatekeeping, I feel the same but I'd add that gatekeeping is a bit necessary? Like words mean things, and a lot of people just kinda do things saying it's this when it objectively isn't and it's very annoying. Like if you know exactly one song by a musician you are (probably) not their fan, you just like one song. There's nothing wrong with liking the one song, it just isn't enough to be considered a fan. Of course people who get excessively judgy and prescriptive are annoying too, but at the end of the day it's all just annoying and you generally shouldn't let it stop you from doing what you want.

I totally agree with the demonia thing! I'm more on the v kei side of things, but have a lot of friends in lolita, and I think it's that a lot of the demonia-lolita content that dominates online is just poorly styled. I was thinking the same: if it's paired with other additions, it looks great! It's honestly the same as slapping demonias on any other outfit it doesn't compliment (which again, is a lot of what ends up getting a ton of engagement and views online)

Fashion-wise I'm definitely mostly invested in lolita(as well as some other alt styles such as fairy-kei, pastel goth, and mori-kei, to a somewhat lesser degree) as opposed to most normie fashion, but I know that's not the case for everyone! I just went straight from "doesn't care about fashion at all and hates makeup" in my teenage years, to taking in all the information I can about my chosen fashion style and drooling over cute dresses lol. Also, omg, where did you get that pink blouse? It's amazing! I've been looking for a blouse with that sort of ruffly collar, but haven't been able to find any.

I'm here!!! (Fashionably late) The Number 1 Demonia Defender!!! So, luxury fashion is a special interest of mine and one of the most important ingredients for making a garment or outfit interesting is through contrast. Contrast in colour, texture, shape and also sometimes vibe. Sometimes an outfit being too predictable makes it blur together and sometimes I feel like more of the "acceptable" Lolita shoes blend into the outfit rather than adding to it. If that's what you're going for then perfect! But I like when fashion is unexpected - when it's more daring. Demonias can bring some of that unpredictable punch while still feeling balanced if coloured and accessorised thoughtfully. Poofy skirts and big head accessories can make a coord feel top heavy, especially for someone like me who is extremely short, has a large chest and shoulder area, and a big ol' afro on their head. Chunky, platform shoes can offer me some needed height and can help balance my squatter proportions as when I wear flats in Lolita I look even shorter than I am

I love wearing stompy boots with lolita, and I feel like the bigger your foot looks the more old scool-ish clunky and oddly proportionate the coord is. I wear my white sparkly demonias with shiro lolita sometimes, and I've even tried making space themed uchuu kei/lolita coords with them. Personally I also LOVE the weird unbalanced look of black goth boots with a light coloured outfit, I've done that outside of lolita a lot. I also wear a ton of styles besides lolita. I got into goth first, and then branched out to many other things as well, but I'm always a goth at heart because of the music. I can and will try almost any alternative or interesting style at least once, if I can find some fitting pieces from thrift stores. IMO the new wave of experimental lolita is the best thing that has ever happened to the subculture. Clown makeup? Awesome. Sneakers or Demonias? Yes. Mixing different styles? Totally. Just having fun and going to town with it? HERE FOR IT! Lolita is not a serious thing, it never has been. Brutally bullying people who make honest mistakes or don't care about researching properly, people who are just goofing around, that drives me so mad, and it happens so much. Our precious subculture is not the most important and sacred thing in the world, deal with it.

I will always aggressively support gatekeeping for any hobby community. It is NOT a bad thing. It is NOT based on your race/sex/sexuality/etc. It's based on "Do you actually enjoy and understand X?" That's it. And also "Do not force your opinions/wants onto the community and force them to conform to your specific wants." This is why so many hobby communities are in shambles nowadays; they didn't gatekeep.
