Did anyone else hate this answer? Good for the husband for standing up for his wife, but is he supposed to just tell his mom to stop every time she does this and then they have a nice dinner where they say they want to make peace and respect them, but nothing changes? And all this talk about how she’s the grandmother of her kids… my kids would stop seeing a grandmother that’s going to disrespect their parents. Nope. Cut. Her. Off.

They are attempting to keep the peace. They are giving her language to use when she talks to her MIL with the expectation that the MIL may or may not change. At least she tried to have a grown up conversation. If MIL continues the disrespect after the conversation then level consequences. If she refuses to sit down at talk, level consequences. My kids wouldn't be at anyone's house who is disrespecting me. But everyone doesn't set clear hard boundaries like that.

Wow! This sounds just like my MIL. She has told my kids to their face that they will always be stupid because I’m their mom and have decided to homeschool them. She’s also told my husband she wishes he would’ve found someone more like my brother in law’s girlfriend, because she’s more like the daughter in law she thought she’d have. When my husband tells her off she starts crying and says she never said any of that and we are just making it up.

Ah, Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Yeah, MIL isn't ever going to change. She's not going to have a lightbulb moment, and DIL committed the cardinal and unforgiveable sin of "stealing" her sweet son away. The only thing that can change in this circumstance is the DIL and her husband and how they deal with the situations, or choose to avoid them altogether. It sucks. Dave's right though. There's one in every family, or more sadly.

Weak people need to gossip to make themselves feel superior to everyone else. But consuming gossip, like watching videos like these or watching shows like paternity court, is attractive to almost everyone. Maybe because people crave a connection, even a negative one. Maybe we're just naturally curious about other people's lives.

@@orion3706 Sorry to hear about your brother. I have two older brothers who have gone through divorces so I know how diffult that can be on a family. Thankfully to your point my husband is supportive whenever when I bring up concerns and he makes an extra effort to make sure his mom knows (though he loves her dearly), I am priority in his life.

@@nev2943A Mother (I’m almost sure your MIL doesn’t) isn’t in competition w her DIL, at least most aren’t. There’s room for both in his life. It’s two totally beautiful, yet different kinds of love that you both share and he is more than happy to be loved by the two women he adores most in his life. The woman that raised him and taught him how precious it is to be loved and the woman that he chose to spend his life with and raise his children. It’s a precious and understanding wife that knows there’s more than enough room for the both of you. I know your husband is thankful and feels blessed that you aren’t threatened by such a natural relationship as that of a Mother and Son. What peace you have brought to your union. Every loving parent is obsessed w their children, no matter how old they are.

I don’t completely agree with this advice to just chalk it up to her being the crazy one. That may be true, but she shouldn’t have to just sit back and take it. I know she could definitely be worse, but she’s being abusive and manipulative, so I’d be tempted to distance myself and my children until the MIL can behave. If she can’t, then we don’t bring the children around because we don’t subject ourselves to abuse.

@God IS Love good for you! It also teaches the children that the behavior is unacceptable. Having a relationship with someone is a privilege. The MIL having a relationship with her son, his wife, and their children is NOT mandatory if she is abusive. Nope.

My mother in law bad- mouths my adult children (her grand kids) to ME! My kids cut her grass, spread mulch, do household repairs for and never take any money she tries to pay them. She tells me how badly they do these jobs. I think they do a fine job. I just want to scream.

This woman is in lots of company. My daughter's mother in law is just like that. My daughter had a beautiful little girl after she got involved in a bad relationship. She walked away from that one & married her husband. His mom really never accepted my daughter & granddaughter. My granddaughter rarely goes with them to visit because of how they treat my family. My son in law does stand up for them sometimes but sometimes absence is best.

IMO - I left my former husband, because he refused to intervene concerning his mother's hatred of me. She literally did things that were illegal, and unethical in an attempt to break us up. So, I divorced, and took our kids to a location several hours away. Her scheme backfired.

Both my single mother and single mother-in-law tried to destroy my marriage and talked behind our backs. They used the info from each other to persuade their children (me and my husband) that our significant other is not good or right for us...lol The saddest part is when we confront them, they went off as if we are horrible children and unappreciated of their motherly love and concerns.

When I first met mine, she would gossip about other family members. I thought it was weird and inappropriate. I pretty much ignored it. She would tell my husband and I deep personal things others confided in her. After causing massive marital problems, I finally went completely no contact. Now she gossips about me to everyone. My husband never stood up for me like the lady's on here and told his mother point blank not to ever speak to his wife like that again.

A trick my parents did is have lots of family friends that you also spend holidays with. That way you're not reliant on 1-2 people to be ideal grandparents to your kids. You have a bunch of families playing that role to each other.

I had to sit on my late mother in law for years before she respected me. I also had to train my husband not to be a mummy's boy and not to sit on the fence to keep the peace. I have always been the main earner too. I am a mother-in-law of two and I make sure I never do that. By the way why you do say he leads your family? You are equals.

My husband cut off both of his sisters for gossiping about me and being rude to me. They refused to have a conversation about it so he wiped his hands of them until they are ready to sit down and confront me on what they think is so bad about me. Everyone was taking about me but not to me! I am so blessed to have a husband that has my back like that.

This is the thing is the son did speak to the mother in law, and as long as mother in law doesnt bad mouth in front of the kids, life goes on, but if she does bad mouth in front of the kids let her know thats not tolerable because it hurts the kids, and then be prepared to not bring the kids into a situation where someone is going to emotionally hurtful to them

If the granny decides to be a “biotch”, I’m not going to accept it. The next conversation with my husband would be “are you going to explain to the kids why we are okay with granny speaking about mom like that. Or are we going to stop the kids being alone with granny?”

We have the issue where the in-laws convince everybody that they are the worlds greatest grandparents. We have to grin through all the “you are so lucky” comments. Truth is, they didn’t have time for their grandkids and it’s heartbreaking. 😢

Her MIL doesn’t need to be “sitting in a corner” in the future unless it’s by herself somewhere. You treat me like this you change, grow up or you’re out. It’s too toxic to play around with. Hurt people hurt people, yes BUT it’s a choice NOT a mistake.

My mother’s mother was a vindictive, manipulative, and controlling woman. I remember conversations when I was little, and she was not above wielding us (her grandchildren) as weapons against my mother. When I was around 10 years old, my grandparents were visiting and my grandmother did her thing... only this time my mom had had enough - she swiped all the sandwiches they were making off the counter and started screaming for my grandmother to “GET OUT OF MY HOUSE”. That was the last time we ever saw that woman. Unfortunately, my mother had waited 10 years too long to do that, and the damage was done. It all effected the way my mother connected with us (she was very distant) and as we grew into adults she became a bit like her mother. I hope this caller has cut that woman out of her life.
