I went through this with my mother, because I was not ready to let go. I had to realize she was going to a better place than I was at. Sometimes we are selfish. I know I was when it came to let go. This woman’s mother in law said the wrong thing , we all do, but forgiveness is what Jesus taught. Your husband and your children should be able to have his mother and their grandmother in their lives. If it had been your mother that made this mistake you would want her and you to be forgiven. Teach your children a valuable lesson about, love, forgiveness, and letting go. In heaven your mother will still be your guardian Angel and have the greatest treasure your love. Sooo understand this caller, and send her hugs. Losing a parent to Alzheimers is just as painful as losing them to anything else, and often moreso. She’s grieving, even though her mother is still alive, and her emotions are raw already. For a MIL to ask if she could ‘take’ any of her mother’s possessions is outrageous, and almost cruel, as she should know better. I’d have a problem, even, with her MIL staying at her mom’s home. I’ve seen plenty of passive-aggressive MIL’s, maybe she is one of these. Trying to talk to them is pointless - it’s their nature to be so.

Sounds to me like this caller doesn't have good communication skills. Why harbor so much resentment and pain towards a MIL who simply asked if she can have some of the bio moms things that she wouldn't be needing or using anymore? You let her stay in your bio moms apartment, it's not a stretch for her to get comfortable and start using the things in it. I would want my MIL to have comfort with items my mom couldn't use anymore, better them ending up being used by a loved one than not being used at all. Caller seems to be taking her the frustration of her mothers condition out on MIL. I feel for the MIL having to walk on eggshells around her DIL. She was even kind enough to realize the grief and said she would leave. Sounds like a kind MIL who has a DIL that is sliding her behind her back, and now on a National Talk Show, for such a petty reason. I think DIL isn't looking for a solution, but rather keeping MIL as a scapegoat as someone to punish for her pain. MIL will do no right under these conditions. I hope she is able to move on to a more healthy and tranquil situation.

Overly sensitive caller. She's blaming the pain that she's experiencing from her moms problems on her MIL. She already allowed the MIL to live in the moms house. At the end of the day, other than pictures and sentimental things, her moms items are nothing more than items.Just tell the MIL no. If the MIL doesnt get them another family member will or they will go to goodwill, craigslist, the callers closet or the trash can at some point

If the MIL was not welcome to stay with the family, and was going to be at a hotel, then why did they offer the woman's Mom condo instead. There is a lot that is not being said here. What stuff? Was she wearing her Mom's clothes? Makeup? Eating food from the frig? Or was she wanting personal jewelry and sentimental family items? I heard (not sure because the woman was not clear) there was something of personal items in a box that was of the main concern. But then the woman did not want to repeat what it was because she already told the call taker -- what she consider a private matter. Duh! If you are calling Dr. John's show (not Dave Ramsey's Financial show) to discuss a problem then you better know it is going to be heard by everyone that is listening. I am glad Dr. John saw the woman's act and told her to take responsibility for the situation, and talk to the MIL. Side note, I lost my Mom to Dementia. The Hospice nurse started asking for stuff to take to her car, minutes after my Mom passed. Asking for her TV, coffee maker and other items. I told her that my Mom lived with me and those items were mine and that nothing was leaving my home. Some people take advantage of people when a tragic situation happens because they know the the person is not thinking clearly. Sounds to me the woman really needs therapy for the fact she is loosing her Mom to a horrible disease - Dementia. She and her sister (and any other siblings) should all go. Just my opinion.

No. This advice is terrible. It opens a door for an already incredibly insensitive woman to nag the caller about giving her her mom's stuff after she passes. The MIL needs to be shut down, period. Seriously, she's either going to constantly remind the caller that her mother is dead, or pull some "oh let me help you pack up her things" and then, several months later, after the intensity of the caller's grief diminishes some, she's going to wonder what happened to mom's (whatever) and eventually realize certain things are missing.

Why is this on Financial Peace? This woman needs to see a counselor and help work through creating healthy boundaries and being able to stand up for herself appropriately. This show has turned from a financial to a pseudo psychology show.
