15-year-old Andriy recounts to CNN's John Berman the moment his family was forced from their home at gunpoint in Chernihiv, Ukraine, and the attack that claimed his mother's life. #CNN #News
What a brave articulate young man. He’s suffered such a horrific ordeal! His poor Mother burned to death before his eyes. My heart is broken for him and his Father.
I cried while watching this. Imagine the pain his mother going through while being burn to death, and the horror in this young man witnessed his own mother being burned alive. He must have felt so hopeless unable to help his mother, and the feeling of guilt forever on his mind in the future.
It broke my heart when John asked: What do you want the world to know about your mother? Thank you for giving the boy the chance to honor his beloved mom.

A month ago he was just living the normal life of a teenager and now he's been blown up by a mine and witnessed his mother dying. It's so unimaginably horrific and senseless, I can't believe he's so composed. There are just no words for the bravery we are seeing in the face of such inhumanity.
Hes composed because he is in shock. He is going through the begining of PTSD He will continue to explain what happened in great detail for many years. Its healing to do this. It will help him reason. Then he will stop completely. He needs much therapy, maybe CBT and mindfulness.. I wish I could help him . I took a degree to study this condition.

He seems like such a smart, GOOD boy. I'm sure he was adored by his mother. And I'm sure his mother was so proud of him. His smile when playing his instrument- I hope he can continue to find some joy even in the hardest moments.
This is heartbreaking 🥺 He reminds me of my little brother, and I couldn’t imagine him ever having to go through anything like this! I feel this boys pain 💔. My deepest, deepest condolences to him and his father!
This is heart breaking to have to see and not be able to help him. I'm sure his mother was very proud of him. This war is soul crushing to everyone in the US.

Poor lad. What a terrible, truly horrific experience. Sad for any teenager to lose their mother, but in this way - no words. How eloquent and brave of him to be interviewed. Those injuries - but mentally even worse. As a mother, my heart breaks for him. Well done to the journalist - I hope they stay in touch.
I know what it's like to lose a mother under ordinary circumstances. I thought that was bad enough, but this is just absolutely horrific. I've got so much admiration for how this young guy comes across as well.
Notice how technical he is with the details? I was in the same state when I was 18 after my dad passed. It was so shocking that you can't even absorb what's going on. It's like watching everything from outside your body. Like a weird morbid hyper clarity. But my dad died of a heart attack and I held his head in the back seat on the way to the hospital. I can't imagine what it's like to be blown up and wake up to the sight of your own mother burning alive. I hope this kid doesn't grow up with hate in his heart.
I was thinking that same thing about how he seemed almost detached at first. He very much looked to me like he was in a state of shock and actively processing what had happened. The trauma is very raw. I hope this interview ultimately helps him process his grief in the healthiest way possible (which is still abysmal) and doesn't feel like further traumatization or exploitation. It's so hard to know, as a viewer, if the victims their interviewing felt at all pressured to talk or if it's something they actively wanted to do. The exception being all of the remarkable Ukranian women who have actively sought out journalists for the opportunity to scream at the cameras. They're driven by their justified rage, and nobody will tell them what to do.
Being shot or blown up is very sudden and unexpected - even if it’s not nearly as bad as what he’s endured. It can *really* mess with you. I *still* have flashbacks forty-plus years on.
So, you are all seeing what I seen. Difference I am not afraid to say that there's a very real possibility this kid is an actor. No tears and when subject changed came straight out of (what looked to me) to be acting. He just wasnt able to produce tears which it looked like he was trying to do.
He will never forget this his whole life he will manage his sorrow in order to survive. The people of the World in Europe allowed this attack and war. Shameful. Glory to Ukraine.

I helped pick up Ukrainian people from the border and bring them to Kraków to make the next step in their journey. One of the families we brought-a mother, grandmother, and a 14-15 month old daughter-are from his same town. I’m so grateful that they’re safely out, and they’ve taken good care of the little girl: she was still laughing and playing freely. But they have family still in Chernihiv whom they’re really worried about because the exits are blocked and they have no food or water. Friends, nothing justifies this type of warfare.
On behalf of those of us who are too far away & can’t lend a helping hand in person, we thank you for going out of your way to do what you could to help. Thank you.
@Mr Santoro It's interesting. As I was reading through the different comments, I came across yours, and it got me thinking: when I see people like you commenting, people who support Vladimir Putin's indiscriminate bombings of innocent men, women, and especially children, I imagine this is what it would have been like if there had been social media back during Adolf Hitler's time -- disgusting people like you would be vehemently supporting Hitler and defending him, screaming "FAKE NEWS!" when reports about death camps and genocide would arise, talking about how righteous and heroic Hitler is and how those men, women, and even children being mercilessly massacred by his armies are not victims and instead -- as you put it -- "...get what they deserve." Yeah, I imagine it would have been exactly like this.

@@annan7728 I am not sure President Zelensky is at fault in any if this. It was Vladimir Putin who made the decision to attack the Ukraine. @@janetairlines1351 Um, it's the largest European country that isn't Russia. Pretty easy for most news watchers to find on a map. It's been consistently in the US news since 2014, so ... I'd say it's probably one of the easier to identify countries for most people. Not gonna disagree that much of CNN's coverage is propaganda, but not all propaganda is false or ethically wrong. Propaganda can be utilized for both just and unjust causes. Ukrainians have been remarkably successful in utilizing propaganda to boost morale and garner support. I don't think NATO should intervene with direct military action (e.g. the no-fly zone Ukraine has asked for), but Ukrainians are the victims and are fully justified in using propaganda in their fight for freedom.
They are so unified and have incredible inner strength and restraint. They work together like a well oiled machine. Unlike the aggressor. A house/ government/ community etc that are divided amongst themselves are destined to fall. When there's no trust there's no unity. My heart goes out to all victims on both sides. He stayed so calm until the interviewer asked that one question. I hope the boy and his father will be able to process that nightmare somehow and mourn his mother properly.
When someone asks that question, it forces someone to summarize the life of someone while also being in extreme shock. It’s an unfair question, but it’s so often done without true thought of the recipient of said question. It’s exploitive of someone is the most vulnerable and shocked moment of their lives.
I can't imagine what you're going through right now. I’m sorry for the lost of your mother young man. I hope you feel you inner strength building day by day.

His mother's love will be with them forever and she will live on through them.

Wonderful that he still has his guitar and he mustered the courage to play it despite his grief and sorrow. The reporter did a great job telling his story; he clearly connected with the young man, who is the same age as his own kids.
I too had a parent die in a horrific way when I was a teenager. I feel so sorry for what he's going through. I lived my life not realizing I was traumatised by the death of my father.
