Never pull the hands down to start the downswing! If you start your downswing like this, you're gonna suffer with a lot of inconsistent golf! Learn how to start the downswing with the hands and arms naturally, and you will have a much more consistent golf swing.

Have been addicted to your lessons since the first of the year. I am starting to notice that your swing philosophy has been consistent with some drills repeating in your videos. This is appreciated because I need to be reminded to stay after these drills to be get good results. Once again, great content. Thank you!

One of the, if not THE best instructional videos in RU-vid Land. Jonathan, thank you for telling it as it is, providing easy to understand, executable and (for me) game-changing drills and avoiding the psycho-babble BS proffered by so many other golf instructional channels. You are without a doubt the best kept secret on RU-vid. Once word eventually gets out, I foresee 500k+ subscribers. Thank you sir!

Your videos have helped me so much with my irons. Your explanation is clear and simple vs. other instructors. The key of this lesson is keeping the upper body passive.

I always pulled my arms down because I though it’s what cause the club to release. Will definitely practice keeping my arms and body more sync by using your drills thanks.

Excellent. Thank you. Backs up exactly what I thought was going on in my swing. Being a student of Jack and Greg Norman, and the like, my swing was very upright. It worked ok when I was young but after a long layoff (35years) I now find I do not have the coordination or agility to swing like this. I also see Jason Day’s back issues now (he is also relatively upright). Thanks again. Cheers mate.

Thank you mate! I have been hitting a tonne of shanks lately and I think this is the issue. I am pulling down from the top which is causing right shoulder to drop, a severe in to out plane and exposing the hosel. I just need to keep the hands and arms passive, rotate and let the club drop down along the target line!

Great video Johnathan. I would like to see a video on side bend in both the backswing and the downswing. This is something I struggle with but you get a lot of side bend in your swing which is impressive.

Question for you. Seems like the overall concept of shallowing has two elements - hand path (depth of hands) and shaft angle. Can we track both elements combined by simply observing where the clubhead crosses the body in the DTL view? If the clubhead crosses the body in the lower back / belt area, then it's an adequately shallow swing. If the clubhead crosses the body in the upper back /neck area, then it's too steep. What do you think?

I always feel like im pulling my hands straight down, but when on camera im definitely not...they sort of just fall but man it feels like im pulling down...i think the difference with my "feel" is that my arms dont just feel like im pulling down, it's more like a hard pull but also trying to push my away from me...dont know exactly but hey, ive been playing great since i started pulling down, but like i said it definitely doesnt look like the clubs steepening...weird how the feel does.not match reality
@garrywalsh1225

Enjoyed the video. But it occurred to me that you can start the swing by pulling down on the club - just don’t use your arms, then it will be the lower body opening that pulls the arms and club down and separation is achieved.
@danwhitehurst9592
@danwhitehurst9592 3 года назад
All of this makes sense. But in reality if you keep rotating, a hands straight down feel( but not in reality) is correct. Also don’t assume everyone’s swing will compensate and flip the club through impact. Also losing width on the start of the downswing is how we generate power. It’s always been width going back narrow on down and width following through. Every pro does this. From a behind view, look at the hands at the top and where they need to be at impact. They can’t go more than about a foot towards the ball or you’ll be outside the line. Yes it’s a bit steep but releasing the hands in different times affects steepness. Release late(stinger or knockdown shot) steep. Release early and you’ll shallow out more, too early you’ll hit it fat. You’re teaching Ben Hogan here. How to hit a shallow fade. Yes this information is gold for an advanced player but for a hack your not addressing most players key faults. An outside in steep downswing and shallowing out with an early flippy cupping release. Most hacks don’t release the club correctly or in speed with the body.

Listen to this and try to apply it to your swing if you wish to take a step backwards to becoming a better ball striker. Unfortunately, what teachers won’t tell you or admit; Once you have the fundamentals down, you will develop your own swing and FEELINGS. There’s no quick fix. If your setup, grip, stance, alignment is good, hit the range and course and develop your own swing. Everyone is different. No skeleton structure is the same, thus every swing will be and feel different. Learn the basics and develop your own style. Any good player will know, it can take years to make a change and develop a feeling like this guy is talking about, yet he’s telling you it can be done quickly and is for a lot. There are many world class golfers who think like that. Sergio literally said “he tries to drop and pull his hands down first” Why do you see the worlds best picking each other’s brains?. They are trying to understand the feeling that other player has in certain position because everyone is different.

Love all of your content, but this is the first lesson i completely disagree with. Dropping (not pulling) ones hands down is a vital "feel" to consistently murdering the ball. I learned this feel later than i wish in my career but it took my game to a whole nother level, more than anything else by far. And it's so natural, logical, and effortless. I think perhaps you should make a distinction between what is a feel and the actual motion, bc I cannot help but notice you are not rotating when instructing not to pull directly into your body. Which of course causes all of the undesirable positions. And which of course is correct. BUT in reality the move is dynamic. We are rotating, so what feels like a pull is really hands *dropping* fast (very fast) as you rotate producing that allimportant width and lag. Yknow?? Anyway, love your content, just not this one.

@jchowngolf
@jchowngolf 3 года назад
I’m not familiar with Malaska’s work, so I wouldn’t be able to comment on the subject, as I don’t know whether he advocates for pulling down the shaft in transition
@kennyc3670
@kennyc3670 3 года назад
@@jchowngolf Malaska has numerous YT videos posted and should be easy to find. He basically propounds positioning the club shaft as you say not to at the start of the downswing. This, he says, will enable a golfer to better direct the club head's momentum into the ball rather than have it get left behind and have to catch it up later with dire consequences. The club head, he says, always tends to drop down behind golfers when they start down from the top. The Malaska move obviates this proclivity. I'm sure if you view his videos and try this out for yourself you'll see the reason for his move. As he says, in a full speed swing, it doesn't appear so, because things happen too fast, but it FEELS like that's what he does. Cheers Ken Cranage
