The Ford Fiesta is slipping down the sales charts, but can this new model turn things around for what was once Britain’s best loved supermini?
Read more at Auto Express:
New Ford Fiesta 2022 review: aex.ae/3y3vr4i
New Ford Fiesta 2022 specs and details: aex.ae/3LC2G2E
The Ford Fiesta is small in stature, but when it comes to sales, it’s an absolute giant. It’s been at or near the top of the UK charts ever since it first arrived almost 50 years ago, but times change, and last year the Fiesta saw its grip on the number one spot slip into the hands of an arch-rival, the Vauxhall Corsa. Now, Ford is fighting back with a revised Fiesta - but what does it offer to help the Blue Oval reclaim its position at the top?
The first thing you’ll notice is that its fresh appeal comes from subtly revised styling. Just like the updated Focus, the Fiesta features a more prominent grille, with the Ford badge now in the centre rather than just above it. The bonnet has been reprofiled, while new headlights compliment bumper tweaks below.
The cabin gets a tech boost, most obviously in the form of a 12.3-inch digital dash, similar to the one found in the Puma. It’s bright and clear, and has a couple of customisation options, including colour and graphics changes depending on the driving mode you go for.
However, unlike some rivals, the Fiesta isn’t available as an electric model or a full-hybrid - will this be its downfall, or are the changes enough to overthrow the Corsa? Nicola Hume finds out.

These “fake carbon” interior bits are 10x better/practical than glossy black ones or new trendy fabric dashboard trim finishers
@nigel.w
@nigel.w 2 года назад
And a lot better for the environment than real carbon fibre. And, in pictures at least, the real matt carbon fibre trim option shown on the Porsche configurator, for which Porsche wants more than a grand for about four thin strips, doesn't look any better. But, I was thinking the same as you when she said that. Better than the glossy black plastic that car makers are currently in love with. I guess I understand it more when it's a haptic interface, but I even tend to walk away from cars that have real piano wood veneers...looks wrong to me, scratches very easily, and also too easily looks terrible. Anyway, I think I'm right in saying that some makers are starting to ditch the glossy black plastic in favour of textured surfaces, except for haptic interfaces. I hope they soon ditch it for everything. I've already seen a haptic strip that looks a bit like textured wood.

Like many commenters mentioned you missed a tiny detail, why the Fiesta dropped out of the sales charts: Ford stopped its production in Cologne for several months straight, because of interrupted logistics chains and prioritising more profitable models. Meanwhile engine and comfort options were canceled because of this, too. No wonder it isn't sold in high numbers as before.

I love the Fiesta. I fully agree that Ford should have put Sync4 in the updated Fiesta here and not sure why they didnt. That aside, it doesn't need a hybrid or EV model. Its such a great driving experience that nothing in the segment can touch. Sadly people don't care about driving anymore. I think that is what is hurting the Fiesta. This couldn’t sum it up better. press...trying to make headlines instead of reporting them why did the Corsa go to number 1...the corsa didn't sell so Vauxhall had fields upon fields stockpiled. no-one wanted one. On the other hand Ford had no reserve stockpiles of Fiesta because everyone wanted one. So when Ford had to slow or stop production (no chips) the Fiesta had all been sold....none left but Vauxhall had loads of cars to sell. And...have you seen the new Corsa.. its big so big that dedicated Vauxhall buyers who used to buy the Astra now buy the Corsa. In reality the Fiesta is still, by far, a much better car especially for the driver.

I think the Fiesta suffers from the same problem as the previous generation Corsa. It isn’t really a new MK at all it’s a lazy facelift. It's actually not a facelift of the 2008-2017 version like the previous corsa. It's just a very similar design like the Ibiza and polo. The shape of the A pillar is more straight and less rounded, C Piller is a different shap on 5 door variants. The window line rises less steeply compared to the 2008 one. The shape overall is more boxy and less sporty on the regular models.
@user-mg2qz6ep2o
@user-mg2qz6ep2o 11 месяцев назад
I meant the previous one looks more nimble/sporty in normal trims (no body kit). The new one has more of a heavy boxy look (almost looks older the shape of it, especially the rear?) In normal trims, you will need to buy a st-line to get sporty looks. The 2013 ones still look great, for an 11 year car. They have aged really well.

So I ordered my ST X on 31th January this year, estimated delivery was June, we're now at October if everything goes after plan from now on (I bet it doesn't :D)... the thing is that Ford is prioritising the plants at Saarlouis and Valencia, they are doing extra shifts and the plant at Cologne doesn't get parts... I guess thats why it's hanging behind the other manufactureres, since the delivery time is enormous. Also they canceled features like mirror heating, BLIS and electrical folding mirrors (sorry Ford, but mirror heating?! 2 cables each mirror)... on the other side it's awesome to have a digital dash and also matrix led headlights... let's see how it goes. According to rumours Ford will permanently stop the production of the Fiesta in late 2023 or early 2024 to fully produce electrical SUVs at Cologne.

I suspected it was something to do with PCP and leasing deals. Ford also seems to be looking for an excuse to drop the Fiesta and Focus, as I understand they've already done in the US. Ford aren't the company they once were. Even before the 2008 financial crisis they had become relatively weak. Not sure what happened. Anyway, I think they want to end up with the Mustang as their only car, which they will electrify at some stage, probably hybridize first, and then have a range of crossovers/SUVs/pickup trucks/commercial vehicles, which they will also hybridize and electrify as soon as markets favour them, because that's where most profits lie.

I bought a new 20 plate Fiesta 2 years ago naturally and I love it, never had any problem with it. It's so economical I can get almost 400 miles out of a full tank of petrol at around 49/50 MPG while I'm commuting to and from work. On longer journeys it can stretch to 470 and 53 MPG. I'm waiting for my new one to be delivered. As a side note my Fiesta was damaged at work and I was given a Corsa as a courtesy car and I hated the damn thing, it was like driving a go kart! I wouldn't have one if you paid me.

400 miles and 50mpg out of a brand new Fiesta jesus that sucks. I can get 55mph and 500 miles out of my Toyota Auris 1.2T which has the benefit of being a bigger car and having a 4 cyclinder engine which is far smoother and quiter. My car also got hit by a nutter in an Audi and I got given a Corsa and I also hated the damn thing for one of the reasons you mentioned but I actually had to send mine back as the power steering failed mid corner.

The Fiesta 1l can actually do more than 55 MPG. I had an ST line 140 and would average 55 mpg on the commute to work. I did an eco run on a flat bit of motorway for 8 miles and got 74 mph. So no, the Fiestas fuel economy doesn't suck. Plus its 3 pot engine is smooth enough, not even a valid dig at the Fiestas engine

A bit of a tangent. Just had a look at the prices of small cars. I’m so out of touch, I can’t believe how expensive cars are new. I tend to buy a car at around 5 years old and keep it a few years. I bought my 2010 car in 2015 and kept it until last month and now bought a late 2016 car which cost me 12500 and that was enough money. A decent spec Fiesta is nearly £25k new, that blows my mind!
@nigel.w
@nigel.w 2 года назад
On average, I think new cars have gone up 5-10% so far this year. The base Dacia Sandero, has gone up from 8K to more than 11 !!! But when you look at new models, we are seeing many more cars positioned at the higher end of the market, and many more cars where the options easily add up to 10k+ all by themselves. So, it's like a double whammy. Base prices +5-10k, and then 5-10k+ in options for brands that used to offer every extra for a grand or two more than the base price. Of course, most people now 'buy' new cars on PCP or lease, and they are surfing the deals more than ever and keeping their options open, also because many models have long wait times. This is skewing the market.

@nigel.w
@nigel.w 2 года назад
@@bikeman123 As long as all those with the money and desire to spend - seemingly an ever-increasing number - keep buying up every overpriced new car, automakers will be happy. How long that will continue, we just don't know. You could well be right. It's logical. But the world is increasingly illogical. Many are making truckloads of cash while more and more people go broke. The thing is though, just because you have the money doesn't mean all you want to drive is bigger and more expensive SUVs or EVs. And the richer you are, the more likely you are to have multiple cars, and you don't want them all to be large SUVs, or grossly overpriced hatchbacks. It's also strange that VW has decided to lower the quality of its cars while increasing prices. If you're paying the big bucks, you expect a quality product. I'm prrety sure that the abandonment of the sub-20k, and increasingly the sub-30k, sectors will end up back firing on many automakers. Most seem to think they can abandon the high-volume business model and chase the Porsche and Ferrari business models. They seem to overlook that Porsche and Ferrari are steeped in illustrious automotive history and are highly aspirational brands. Maybe they should look at low volume makers like Jaguar and Aston Martin, who spend as much time trying to prevent bankruptcy as they do producing cars. And I wouldn't have thought Land Rover's business model was a model you'd particularly want to emulate, either. Or, maybe that's exactly the model they do want to emulate. High prices for underdeveloped cars that are all at the bottom of reliability surveys, for which there is seemingly ever-increasing demand. But again, if that is indeed the current thinking, they overlook that Land Rover gets away with it because they're Land Rover. No other maker will get away with it in the longer term. Even Ferrari had to significantly up its game in terms of quality and service to be as succesful as they now are. I think it's a big mistake to abandon the sub-20k sector to the likes of Dacia. It's bad for the consumer, noting that Dacia's have probably increased in price by the greatest percentages. It's bad for the Government's stated objectives. It's bad for congestion, etc. It's bad for innovation, quality, etc. I think it's hard to know what's really going on, because much of what appears to be going one, doesn't really make sense, unless it's simply cash in while you can, and then back to the old normal. But we see how hard it is to get back to the old normal.

Ambient interior lighting. Rear seat lighting. Height adjustable front seatbelts. Hill start assist on/off facility. Unfortunately, all these things are missing on this 2022 model. This new model does have new annoying and unnecessary techy additions like a speed sign recognition camera system, that, when it sees a 20/30/40/50/ miles per hour sign in a side road it gives the wrong speed limit for the road you are driving on. I am now looking forward to getting rid of this car, and I think many previous customers will be very disappointed when they have to hold the electric window switch while the window SLOWLY moves up and down. Footnote: I would have gladly paid another grand for these things to have not been removed.

Thats why they want to hide the cost of cars behind lease plans etc etc. It is almost as hard to make a car with a list price of say £18k as it is to make one with a list price of say £35k and the margin on the larger latter car is much larger. Wrong way alert is a good idea given the number of people travelling and the number of people who got their licence in a LHD country. Many people take a while to acclimatize. Many people drive by instinct and it can take a while to reprogram oneself. So, I think it's actually a very good idea indeed to hopefully prevent head-on collisions. I also find that a manual pairing to this car make it that much more special and more engaging, however people where I live seems to be getting more lazy as they hate to shift gears in traffic, hence we see a rapid decline with the interest of manual car sales.

Fiesta drives the best and still looks the best. There's no accounting for taste. But, let's face it, Puma sales tell the story. People want compact crossovers. And I suspect the reason for the 'sales' success of the Corsa has more to do with the way people 'buy' new cars these days, 'ie, leasing and PCP. I suspect there have been better deals on the Corsa. All tech shortages aside (Focus has been on hold for several months as they cant get the screens for SYNC4), lack for hybrid options, everything with 1L 3 cyl engine (fine for Fiesta, crap for a Focus on uphill overtake lanes) and crap financial options (max 3yr deals), which makes the monthly cost options no longer as viable when everyone else offers 4yr and higher end balloon payments, rather than have it spread over the 3yrs like Ford seems to do. Yes they invested all their chips/screens with the Transit range and it paid off last year, but the Fiesta and Focus have bore the brunt, but hopefully they'll bounce back. Puma is doing well, and not everyone wants an SUV ( i like a good estate), sadly looks like it will be SUV's only like the US soon enough, unless they can do a good hybrid/plugin option.
