They have a version 3 that they fixed the treble issue. Yes the version 3 treble is smooth and I am pretty sensitive to harshness and etc. The PR2 version 3 sound more accurate and the soundstage width and micro details better then IEM’s I have costing $600 bucks. You need a decent DAC/amplifier as they require voltage for headroom and harder to drive. I notice they are sensitive to higher THD if you listening to a track mastered low and have to increase volume to 90% as a Apple dongle, THD goes up and notice some low static in background and mid bass is not as good. Using my Q5s with AM3D THX reference Amp module and BTR7 that also THX reference the PR2 shines and no static or background noise. Listen to Radio Head track “Everything In its right place” in lossless and will show what the PR2 are capable of. Another great track by The Alan Parson Project “Some Other Time”, most IEM’s will fall apart even some $600 plus one I have and fell apart on this track the PR2 absolutely did great and kept control. The attack and decay on the PR2 are phenomenal as they are quick and not muddy. Planar drivers are going to be game changer when it comes to IEM’s. I typically don’t care for KZ due to most their IEM’s didn’t sound as good as people claimed to V for me and lacked in mid bass and midrange was to recess, but the PR1 pro and PR2 3rd revision are phenomenal and surprised they only cost $85 for the PR1 pro which come with a nice cable as well and PR2 only $52 bucks. To get this level of detail for $52 bucks while have some elevations in lows and treble present and Brilliance range while mid bass and whole midrange is great is unheard of a few years ago. Granted they not flat as a engineer pretty much use to flat/neutral for reference but most are not going to like that and the tuning on the PR2 revision 3 done great and still pretty well balanced. The downside they do require a very good linear amplifier at least 2vrms headroom to tame them to get good headroom peak not necessarily loudness. Most dongle DAC/amps, or most phones unless a LG V series in high gain not going to be good results.

How is ver2 different from ver3 if they both tame down treble with enough power?
@Mystninja

They have a v4.0 now where only half the magnetic array works to save power and make them easyer to drive at 10Ω but a sensitivity of 30db+/-.

Thank you for the review! Good demarcation of the various versions of PR1 and PR2 and what is going on the changes. I just never ever felt confident with KZ devices even after 8yrs or so of knowing them. Really like your successful attempt to be clear with your English. I would really like a lot more content from you as your channel grows. Just discovered you today, and Cheers and all the best! 👍⭐

Thank you! Haha yeah a few of these chifi companies do have some strange stuff going on from time to time. Just boggles my mind how they could have thought this would go unnoticed, because even though the current PR2 is a pretty good IEM, you can still instantly here the difference from what was shown to be the Version 1 (at least looking at the treble response of that one). Still I really like the market as a whole and the stuff they have been releasing. So nice to have good sounding IEMs at these prices. I really try to produce more, I have quite a few new-ish budget IEMs here with me that I haven't even listened to. Just hard to write, record and cut all this besides normal workday and daily chores and whatever else there is sometimes. Again, thank you for your kind words, means alot. :)

@@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews I completely understand the effort that goes behind all the production. And congratulations for the effort. Also its equally nice to have one more reviewer as much as it is to have such a variety of IEMs we've been getting lately. I personally never liked KZ because of the crazy peaks and valleys in the upper mid and treble region, and I always knew there was never any point cramming so many BA drivers in like this. That's why I could never pull the trigger into actually purchasing them. I've been following them even before some of their successful AS series sets like AS10 in 2015 and such. This multi driver fiasco and tuning changes totally eroded my trust in whatever respect I had of them for bringing chifi to the rest of the world, regardless of quality of drivers/tuning.

Thanks for the great review! I have the silent revision version of the PR2 as well, but have been quite happy with how they sound. I haven't had a chance to try the first version though, so I wonder if I would have liked that one better.

@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews 10 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yeah the opinions really differ, some user seem to have way less issues then others, it is pretty weird. I am kind of in the middle there, I do still like the PR2. Planars do need some power to drive properly, but that should not change it from being painfully sibilant to smooth in my eyes. So either this one is pretty special or there is more going on in the production.

There's been this theory that the mesh is causing the treble problem but, I own a version 2 and I have an extremely smooth treble on my pair. So I think that this variation in treble may be because of Driver deviation maybe? The graphs are not consistent from reviewers either, so that's my suspicion.
@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews
@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews 11 месяцев назад
Damn if this is true (which it very well could be) then that is even worse. Such a big deviation from driver to driver would be awful. We will see if this plays out further in some way. I do really like the PR2 that I have here, it is still a great IEM and very much worth the price. It is just that you cannot really trust KZ at that point with these design changes/issues. I do think the treble on my PR2 is not piercing or sth, but it is definently not smooth, at least to my ears.

@@thetechgenie7374 That makes a lot of sense. I agree, it needs extra power to be driven well. I am using the BTR5 and it makes a big difference to the bass. On a standard dongle even at high volume, it sounds a little weaker in the bass region, not as thick. I don't own any 600$ IEMS but it definitely stands head and shoulders above any other affordable IEM I own.

Kz is such crap, the best decision I made was to never ever buy a single product from them, my s12 pro's sound phenomena. Just ditch KZ. And yeah almost every planar iem will benefit a bit from high power sources but than should never change the sound signature or tonality.

Thanks dude! Haha I already read about the controversy with Krila. :D Actually I thought about not buying KZ anymore. I mean I have to pay everything myself and getting silent revisions that change the sound or worse the quality of the IEM as a whole is just a shitty thing. Also KZ seems to have absolutely no idea how to deal with these things and seems to make it worse everytime something shady like that happens. But I guess if I wanna be more "audiophile pro reviewer" I have to throw myself into the scandalous chifi world and report such things. I do bought the ZVX and I kinda hate it. Review is coming. Thanks again for subbing!

@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews
@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews 9 месяцев назад
I am not really familiar with the black dragonfly, but I've read that it is a little bit on the weaker side, and the PR2 does need some power. If you want to stay with mobile dacs, maybe upgrade and go with the new Truthear Shio which has a detachable cable? It will get loud enough with your dragonfly though (at least for me, I do not listen to music extremely loud), but you will have more headroom with a more powerful dac (I am not entirely convinced if mobile dacs/amps change the sound that much, so that is more or less up to you).
@ianl.9271
@ianl.9271 10 месяцев назад
These IEMs are very sensitive to the amp and the tips, mine don't have the mesh. But I find that they sound really beautiful with foam tips when the cable is changed to balanced connection and driven with balanced amps. Once you have heard them driven with balanced amps, you don't want to go back to driving them single ended. So I can't imagine having the mesh which might take out the very open airiness sound that I love with these IEMs. No hints of shrillness and sibilance but could be my aging ear. So they might be better for older people where the ear starts to roll-off around 12kHz-15kHz compared to younger folks.

planar are meant for desktop set up because of their nature of power hungriness and low sensitivity, just go for dynamic drivers for gaming and ease of use.

Yeah it seems that controversy, and drama is part of the Chi-Fi rabbit hole, for personal use, guess one can live with this, if one has not spent too much money. But I can imagine for professional use, where I am responsible for recommending products for others to use, and I need predictability that the sound will not vary significantly from one headset to another, I can see why for now, I'd tend to stick with the big money manufacturers, like AKG

@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews
@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews 3 месяца назад
Planar bass and especially the bass of the PR2 is maybe a bit different than you expect it to be. Its a lot cleaner, but you do not have that long staying rumble or boom that you might expect. "Good" bass varies from person to person, do you want a clean and fast bass response (which the PR2 has) or rather a "big" sounding one? Good IEMs with a nice bass emphasis are for example the Tangzu Fudu or the Kiwi Ears Melody (also a planar, but sounds a bit different). If you wanna go cheap, the KZ Castor Black sounds nice too. Also the CCA Rhapsody does get really good reviews and would also be a good choice I think. If you want to go overboard with loads and loads of bass then the new QKZ Hades would be an option. I have that one here but havent taken a listen yet but looking at the frequency response graphs it has more bass than anyone would ever need haha.

@@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews well, Im an osu player and love psytrance and schanz(heavy bass EDM) so it's hard to find a good IEM. Im using cca cra+ now and fine with it. I have already bought jm6 pro, az09 Bluetooth module and a kz cable so i think i will try the KZ PR2 (even it is not worthy at the price and it is not the OG).

Damn sorry you have these issues with the treble, it is such a shady thing to first send to "real" versions everyone was waiting for out to popular reviewers, get good reviews and then cut corners in the production process. I still have the new ZVX here but I do not think I will buy another KZ after that. Oh and thank you! Did this like 12 years ago and I do think I have to let it get redone soon haha.

QC is bad, lots of FR variation, bad L-R matching. Got those for $20 at ali. Mine came out without hearable ballance issues. You need at least 400mW@16ohm (1W would sound marginally better) source for those, or they aren't worth the hassle. Same goes for Artti T10 and most planars. This is about dynamics and texture, not loudness. S12pro/ F1pro are more sensitive. Good unit with beefy source transcends the price bracket. Fun piece in collection. They are much heavier and larger than chu2 or em6l. If you rolled a nice fit with them - should be ok. Dunu S&S worked much better than stock tips for me. If you need something cheap to drive from a phone/dongle i would get a R2 / Q1 pro / ew200 / chu2 instead.

@absolutelyaverageaudioreviews 9 месяцев назад
For playing guitar you would want something that does not need much power and is a little bit less V-shaped I would say, so the midrange is even more in focus. Something like the Truthear Hexa should work and if you want something cheaper I really like the new Tripowin Piccolo. You can basically use any IEM, this is just what I would prefer and what makes the most sense to me.
