Bobby was a friend on mine from 1963 until he past in 2003. Great guy and singer. He and Bill Medley sang together for many years. On their albums they sang together but also always had solo cuts they did on their own. This live version is from 10-25-1965 when Bill and Bobby were on "The Andy Williams Show." I've seen the Righteous Brothers over 50+ times in person and this was always on the list of songs that Bobby would do solo at every concert. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. My short version of how this song came to be. In 1954, in Los Angeles, CA a small film company called Republic Pictures needed a title song for a movie, "Unchained." Alex North (Los Angeles based) wrote the music and then sent it back to his lyricist friend Hy Zaret on the East Coast. Mr. Zaret pulled out some old poems he had written in the late1930's and early 1940's that he use to try and impress girls that he liked. He messed around with the song adding and deleting his own lyrics to fit the beautiful score written by composer Alex North. The movie was released in 1955, and "Unchained" was first sung by Gospel singer Todd Duncan in the movie. Many artists recorded it, but in 1965 Bobby Hatfield made this song so famous, that today March 1, 2021 - if it were released again it would be a monster hit - because it's that great!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the pleasure of spending an hour with Alex North in Hollywood in 1983 and he share the entire story with me. Bobby Hatfield performed this live on the Andy Williams Show on October 25, 1965, accompanied by the orchestra on the show. No autotune, no backtracking, just pure talent. He suffered from terrible stage fright, and his mom and dad were in the audience, so when he hits the G5 at the end, he knows he nailed it. Bobby Hatfield was born in October 1940 and passed away in November 2003

Charles Carles 10 months ago I am 81 and have heard several artist before Bobby’s version and several after. No one comes close to this, Bobby owns it. This version came out as I was headed for Viet Nam. You can feel the loneliness in the words and the way we felt as we were away from our families for one long year. Bill and Bobby always did one solo on each of there albums and while on tour. They both wanted to do “Unchained”, so they flipped a coin. The music was written as the theme for the little-known prison film “Unchained” (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. The movie “Unchained” is about a man in prison and longing for his wife and children. Hoping his wife will still be there when he gets out. So you can now understand the meaning of the song. The movie was not very good, or so my friends told me. But we were all teenagers so what did we now. Several artists sang it and it made the billboard top 100. But no one can come close to Bobby Hatfield’s version. Bobby’s version hit the top ten chart. And did it again when it was used in the movie “Ghost” It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by Bobby. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages.

I have read a few times that this performance was voted the best solo performance ever sung. I have to agree.

Something to keep in mind: this was recorded in 1965. The Vietnam War was just heating up, and young American men were being sent, not just to Vietnam, but to American bases all over the world. They were separated from wives, from girlfriends, and the line asking "Are you still mine?" resonated a lot with them.

Bobby was 25 yrs old in this video. He is now in the rock and role hall of fame. Unchained melody is the most beautiful love song ever written. Bobby was found dead in his hotel room in 2003. He kept his beautiful voice til the very end.

Growing up during the Vietnam War era, this song always had a profound meaning to me as I imagined how it touched the soldiers who were longing for their lovers back home. Especially when he sings: "Wait for me, wait for me" I'll be coming home, wait for me.

Courtney: I graduated high school in 1958 which makes me closing in on my 83rd birthday! The righteous Brothers were not actually brothers but, made many beautiful songs together. Courtney, you're expressions and obvious emotions are the same as millions of women. If you were a stick of butter you would've literally melted before our very eyes. 55 years later nothing has changed. My wife tells me that both of the Rightous Brothers were very kind, classy gentlemen. She knew them even before they shot to the heavens with stardom. Neither of them ever changed with success going to their heads.

I just clicked on this and haven't watched it yet. My prediction: She will fall in love with Bobby Hatfield and it will take her a half hour before Courtney could stand again. At least...that was my first reaction to this song and that voice. Remember, Courtney....this was live, in one take, no auto-tune, no digital enhancements. Every effect on his voice was him vocally or by moving the microphone closer or further away. This man died when I was 10 years old and I'm still sad I could never marry him. Edit: I was right.

Bobby's range and vocal ability are second to none. This song was very carefully crafted. There were many very romantic songs back in the day. The Righteous Brothers rendition of Unchained Melody has a special place in music history. It has been chosen as the #1 song in the twentieth century above all others. Over time, there were several renditions of this song by other artists before Bobby to it to a new level. Your reaction to this music was very natural and you are lucky to be so sensitive. There are very, very few songs that can make the listener reach a new level of emotional feeling and many people actually get goosebumps listening to it. Many cry from joy. This song was written for a prison movie- listen again, knowing it's a prisoner singing to his girl on the outside for an emotional experience. Also, that last smile... his mother was in the audience, and he was nervous, and that smile was knowing he hit the note for her.

Song is about a man in prison who is writing to his wife asking if she still loves him and will she wait for him when he is unchained from his prison. He talks about how time goes by so slowly for him and he knows time changes feelings. But, he’s hoping she will wait for him. A sad tale for a perfect song.
