The Staples remind me of home, soul food, love, and family...and the 70's. I was a small baby, but EVERYBODY in the black community, that we knew, no matter how cool, they loved Mavis Staples and the Staple Singers. Stax Records was the sound of the hood - bbqs and block parties, you'd here this and my all time favorite, "Come Go With Me." Just magical, positive, and optimistic.🥰🥰🥰

This song was written by Curtis Mayfield for the movie soundtrack "Let's Do It Again" starring Sydney Poitier and Bill Cosby. They made three movies together, the two others are "Uptown Saturday Night" and A Piece Of The Action". "Let's Do It Again" is the sequel to "Uptown Saturday Night". These movies are very funny, you should give them a look.😅

The female lead is Mavis Staples. She still performs and occasionally puts out new albums. If you listen to Michael Jackson's song "Bad", he got the "shamone" from Mavis. Pops Staples didn't want to sing this song at first, the group mostly sang gospel & message songs. Curtis Mayfield, who produced this, had to convince Pops to record it. Pops also plays guitar. The Staple Singers first started Mavis was around 10 and she already had a deep singing voice. On another note, The Partridge Family are not a real family. They're actors on a TV show. But they were based on a real family group called The Cowsills.

This song was later than I remembered it being, from 1975. This early to mid-seventies sound is their best known stuff, with 1971's "I'll Take You There" being maybe their best known song, but in the 1950s they put out some absolutely stellar gospel stuff, featuring their father's incredible atmospheric guitar work and the girls' soul-stirring vocals. 1959's "I'm Coming Home" and 1954's "This May Be My Last Time" are great examples of this. Their late sixties movement music is also good, songs like "Got To Be Some Changes Made" from 1968 and their cover of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" from 1967. (And Sly and the Family Stone were sort of a family group, but only because the core of the group was Sly Stone and his sister - both from Denton, Texas, by the way, not far south of y'all.)

The Staple Singers began their career singing gospel in the churches of Chicago in 1948. They had many gospels hits in the 50's and 60's but decided to go mainstream around 1970. Their first 2 singles were smash hits, "Respect Yourself" and I'll take You There". If you do "Respect Yourself", check out the live performance at the Wattstax festival.

Yes, glad you finally got back to the Staple Singers. You heard them 2 years ago singing with The Band. They sang the very moving song, "The Weight ( The Last Waltz)." You were particularly impressed with Mavis Staples lead vocals during that reaction. I'm happy you're getting to hear them on their own. I echo others who have recommended "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There." There's a wonderful live version of "Respect Yourself" at a stadium in 1972 that's especially awesome. Pops Staples is singing with his daughters in that one.

This is one of my all time favorite songs, Ever! Mavis, the lead singer, was considered one f the most soulful voices of all time. This song is from the soundtrack to the movie Lets Do It Again, starring Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. Back then when they did a soundtrack it was by 1 artist or 1 group. They also did the soundtrack to the movie A Piece of the Action, again starring Bill Cosby and Sidney Poitier. The song with the same title is also very good. And since we talking about classic black movies with even more classic soundtracks. The original Sparkle movie from 1976. The soundtrack which is in my top 5 soundtracks ever, is done by Aretha Franklin all songs where written by Curtis Mayfield, is worth a watch and listen. And the movie Claudine from 1974 with its soundtrack by Gladys Knight and again all written by Curtis Mayfield is also on my top 5 soundtracks ever. Curtis Mayfield was the r&b/soul music producer of the 70s. He did the soubdtracj to the original movie Superfly as well. Plus his solo albums were hits. All of his music were staples in the African American household growing up and at cookouts, and family gatherings or just cleaning the house on Saturdays. Hes a legend and his music is heavily sampled in hip hop. You really should give him a listen.

A beautiful Blast from the Past - you're making me all misty! RESPECT YOURSELF is an absolute Must, as well as I'LL TAKE YOU THERE (reached #1 and spent 15 weeks on the charts, selling 2 million in less than 10 months)- just such great music and wonderful vocals from The Staples!

Glad to see you finally reacting to the Staple Singers. My favorite song of theirs is I'll Take You There.

Love the Staple Singers!! The dad (Pops) was known as a major bassist! They started out as a gospel group, and you can tell!! For one of those songs, try "Touch a Hand (Make a Friend)" or a cover of a Bob Dylan work, "A Hard Rain is Gonna Fall". I love how the shelf falls whenever it gets too funky! Hahaha!!

One of Mom's first 45s was the Staple Singers "Sha Na Na Boom Boom (Heavy Makes You Happy)" back in the early 1970s. I think that it came out before their smash hits "I'll Take You There" and "Respect Yourself".

The legendary Mavis Staples with her sisters and her father , sang soul and gospel! Fun fact , Mavis Staples is STILL performing and recording to this day!
