It’s a quiet night of October 17th, 2023. A sudden disruption shatters the silence as Ukrainians, at 3 am, launch missiles from HIMARS and M270 systems situated in eastern Ukraine. This time, they employ secretly obtained long-range ATACMS Block 1A ballistic missiles from the U.S. Within minutes, six missiles are launched from one site, followed by three from another.

If only the USA wouldnt have purposefully delayed ATACMS delivery and allowed Ukraine to strike K52s BEFORE the counter offensive Sure it was a great strike, but the k52s had already done their damage.

That's unfortunate politics for them. Even the very basic missile variants of Himars could have been delivered months before Russia's invasion when they started building up forces around the borders. But long has gone the days where presidents and governments are willing to stand up for countries because it's the right thing to do. I honestly think the Biden administration couldn't give a damn about helping Ukraine take back it's territories, they know exactly what would be needed to send to end the war swiftly but choose not to. I think they care more about simply degrading the Russian military. It's sort of a deal with the devil scenario.

Attacking airfields is actually one of the primary purposes ATACMS (original cluster munitions variants) was originally designed for, along with counter battery, suppression of SAMs, and suppression of massing enemy armor and mechanized formations.

Were the Ka52s that high value of a target to expend valuable ATACMs munitions?
@terrified057t4
@terrified057t4 3 месяца назад
Depends on how one sees the value of the munitions. If guaranteed to be expendable, totally fine. But if the US keeps crying its wimp dick tears, maybe not. But considering Moscow's vital attack helis had to retreat and suffered losses, it's a good use of weapons.

In terms of opportunity cost for the Russians, yes. The helicopters were their best way to respond quickly to offensive actions over a wide area of the front, allowing them to concentrate infantry in the most important areas and not have to spread their defense as much. Their ability to conduct a fluid defense within the area those aircraft could cover is now significantly less than it was before the attack. In terms of how it impacted last year's Ukrainian counter offensive, the helicopters had already done their job, and it was too late. It does, however, open up opportunities for future counter-offensives, make Russian aviation more skittish (and thus less likely to provide support to other elements), and puts further stress on the entire Russian apparatus. Taken in context with Russian losses in the Black Sea, continued losses of fixed-wing aircraft, and strikes on Russian petroleum and manufacturing infrastructure, it appears that the Ukrainians are hitting the Russians where they are vulnerable and avoiding confrontation where they themselves are vulnerable. It buys them time, keeps the conflict internationally relevant, and increases the odds that one part of the Russian war machine will fail and tip the balance in the favor of Ukraine. Basically, I don't think Ukraine has (or had at that time) enough ATACMS to cause a breakthrough in the Russian lines. Given the amount they likely had available to them, the attack on the airfield was likely the best way to cause the most damage with lasting effects and shows the West a good reason as to why they should send more.

KA-52s were causing absolute havoc on the frontlines. Mi-28s also. During the counter offensive there were multiple videos of KA-52s destroying entire convoys of western sent armored vehicles. There was one clip where a Ka-52 destroyed an entire column of Bradleys, Australian MRAPs and leopard2s from like 17km out . Plus wounds from the helicopter dumb rocket pods are extremely hard to treat, i wouldnt suggest looking this up even if u got a stomach that can handle gore. But prior to this , the russians were literally destroying ukrainian SAMs like Iris-Ts, S-300s, Buks almost every week which gave these helicopters more freedom to operate on the front lines

@smokinjoe4488 3 месяца назад
@@cherrypoptart2001I think you’re mistaken on a couple of details there, none of the Russian air to ground missiles have a 17 km range and the 47th brigade never operated bushmasters. While KA52 did have a major impact the Russians really latched on to the propaganda value. Also Ukrainian air defences weren’t destroyed before the counter offensive, rather Ukraine has been reluctant to deploy some SAM systems close to the front line especially in mid 2023 which did leave the frontlines vulnerable to air attack.

@@DavidRamos-no4lh Kamov has a new variant called the Ka-52M in production, but all production has been modified from existing Ka-52s. If Russia can produce Ka-52s, then they're not doing it for some reason. I imagine it's because many of the parts to produce them were imported from France like thermal imagers and electro-optics, and that is no longer an option. It took Kamov 5 years to produce 46 helicopters for Egypt before the invasion, at this point with sanctions and the state of the Russian semiconductor industry I would be very surprised if they could produce more than 10 helicopters a year

And in the end...? Finish the sentence. In the end the Ukrainians decided they were tired of spending money, lives, and political on an expeditionary war on someone else's behalf in foreign country thousands of miles away and decided to pack up and go home? Even a basic understanding of history reveals how dissimilar your examples are from Vietnam or Afghanistan. Ukrainians ARE home. This is not some vague overseas struggle for them, but a war of survival.
