In this Strobist Tutorial video you'll learn the basic one light set up using shoot through umbrella - speedlight and flash triggers. It's the most basic set up and very useful to add more punch to your outdoor portraits.
If you don't have flash triggers then you can use command and slave mode IF your DSLR has that feature. The command mode will remotely trigger the flash.
Equipment Used in this video:
DSLR: Nikon D3s
Lens: Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VRII
Speedlight: Nikon SB900
Pocketwizard Flex TT5
Umbrella: Photoflex Shoot through Umbrella
Battery Pack: Nikon SD-6
Light Stand: Photoflex Heavy Duty Light Stand
Camera Strap: Quick Strap ( a knockoff of Black Rapid strap)

These kind of setups can be so much fun. I sometimes spent hours using a simple one-light setup outside. Maybe you can do a video on that. (overpower the sun, use a bare strobe, use highspeed sync etc...)

great video, you were talking about not having to have the expensive gear to take nice shots, a person starting out can pick up a couple of vivitar 285hv flashes for about 25 to 30 bucks each some cowboy studio receivers and a trigger for less than 30 bucks. A person could have a mobile studio for less than a hundred dollars. 285hv's are safe for digital cameras and they are work horses. thanks again for the great video

Thanks Jibran. When you use the flash with the umbrella, how do you set the beams on the flash? you know how you have 3 settings.. flash to go straight or spread..etc. and also are there any recommended settings for the zoom head of the flash. i shot through a large diffuser panel once..i don't think i was quiet successful on that lol

i do have a question! this may sound really dumb but when i see photographers do pics in a studio they have the strobe light and flash i think its what its called but my question is, why dont they just set up soft boxes for the contant lighting

How tall is your stand and how big is your umbrella here? What are the set up you recommend for portable strobist set up? Please do include the sizes.

Don't have to buy anything, when you convert/render the final video file for youtube, go to the audio setting for whichever software your using and select mono audio. So, both left and right channel are playing the same thing.
