“PARKING LOT COURAGE” (720-HD)
I’m “vivatones66”, your videographer. If you saw last week’s video • Bits n' Pieces (720 HD) you saw in the description, I am still trying to find my sea legs after a lengthy health setback affecting use of my hands. We didn’t get past the warm-up in this jam before my paralyzed fingertips pushed two of the wrong buttons on the camera at the same time and froze it for the night.
As I reviewed and edited the short few songs I had managed to record, a thought emerged I believe is worth sharing. There are people I have known and become good friends with from the Jam over many years who have suffered great adversity quietly, and you might never be aware unless a familiar face was missing. You’ve had similar experiences?
I don’t mean to single out one individual as having a greater challenge than another, because I know of several who have had the resilience and spirit to overcome great hardships. There is one, however, whose name I would like to mention; I have his permission. It’s Jack Lewis (banjo), the man, with gold leaf on his cap, sitting next to the tailgate. Jack, a proud veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, was one of the original founders of this Jam over twenty-five years ago. He just recently has started returning to the Jam after having been diagnosed with Parkinson’s about two years ago. He is truly an inspiration and deserves everyone’s encouragement. The “vamp” is there, Jack, and the roll is coming back like a freight train.
PLEASE NOTE: I included “Free Born Man” from last week’s Jam because it includes Jack and other fine banjo pickers.
And, now you know the basis for the title of this week’s video.
Jam sessions are for players to interact with other players and make music in a freewheeling environment, without having to be concerned about performing for an audience. Some jams are impromptu, one-time occurrences, while others are weekly events that may happen in a private setting or in a public venue. Jams may focus on a particular style of music or even a particular instrument, and every jam has its own culture and etiquette.
As you watch THE OCOEE JAM, keep in mind this is an OPEN jam. It is not a rehearsed performance. Each picker, in turn, chooses a tune, and he or she sings or plays it accompanied by all the other pickers. Everyone gets a chance no matter the skill level. It seemed that this Jam was composed mostly of experienced pickers. The Jam meets every Friday evening at 6:30 in the parking lot behind the Starbucks Coffee Shop at 10870 West Colonial Dr., Ocoee, Florida 34761.

Edward Petty Edward, thank you so much for taking your time to visit again. I was hoping to share this Friday’s jam with you but the weather report looks like a 50% chance of rain in sunny Central Florida. If so, God willing, we’ll see you in a couple of weeks.

Dave Mcclenaghan thank you Dave. I agree; it was a fine jam, good musicians and good music. But to be perfectly frank, and I’m sure you would agree, the photography has to get better. I owe it to the pickers and to my subscribers.Thank you for hanging in there, Dave.

Hi vivatones66, Thank's for the reply I don't think the photography was that bad when you consider what you have been through in the past two years. There is an old saying ( half a loaf is better than no loaf ) so my friend don't beat yourself up about it just keep those fine jams coming. PS I got the all clear from the doctor today. Take care God Bless.

George M Thank you for the kind feedback your age. I always feel I need to get my level of quality up to the that of the musicians. Sometimes it’s hard to do. Thanks for setting me straight.

I've watched several videos of this amazing collection, even commented in the past and vivatones66 kindly replied. I hadn't checked for updates for a long time, myself in my 70s with various geriatric health issues and general life challenges - and today I remembered this site, wondering how many new videos were. I found this one and others of 3 years ago, and I'm wondering what's going on with all of you. The writeout of this "courage" video touched me deeply, I think you understand life well and I hope you 'vivatones66' are keeping well and can see this comment... if anyone knows, would you kindly respond? I hope all of the people involved in this jam are holding on well, or as best as possible. I love this channel, and although I'm having hearing problems, I listen carefully with earphones, and I feel as I'm right in the middle of the fantastic, genuine musicians. A warm greeting to all of you, writing from a wintery region in the Southern Hemisphere.

Tim Newman Thank you Tim, me too. I have a got a ways to go to please my critics with the photography. It’s always come easy; not this time though, but I am going to give it my best effort. You can’t beat the friendships, And the music is multicultural and appeals to all ages. Thank you for your post, Tim.

@@vivatones66 Ignore the critics, they're few in number relative to the thousands of us who think you do a wonderful job and have brought us so much pleasure. Don't push yourself too hard, we have your huge back catalogue which I never tire of going over repeatedly. Just do what you can and enjoy the music. I wish you the very best.

vivatones66 it is really amazing to hear from you again I have really missed your videos I realise we are all getting older but your vids keep me young (at heart at least) sorry to hear about Jack but my friend has the same condition and he started playing guitar as it keeps his fingers and muscles nimble, (here's hoping) and to hear he's an Airborne Division (WOW) he's my hero now, anyway I myself have just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my joints but I don't give a damn as i've had a great life and even more so over the last eight years listening to your brilliant videos keep it up my friend, your UK biggest fan Jeff please pass on my regards to everyone missed them all, hope you get yourself sorted my friend.

Connie Weisman Thank you Connie for your wonderful suggestion. I use a mono pod or better mobility on my electric wheelchair. That way I can move around a bit and hopefully make the video somewhat more interesting. I am a little shaky, however, because of quadriplegia, so you may have to take a little Dramamine (LOL). Thank you so much for your nice comment. I hope you’ll continue to watch.
