This is the last installment of the " How to change your timing belt " video series. I am sorry about the video quality. I had to video and do the work myself. I hope that seeing this will inspire you to tackle other jobs on your car or truck. Who knows, you might take a look at that lawn mower that you were thinking about throwing away. :0)

Hi John, Me again. I just wanted to say thank so much. It took a while (I lost the tension bolt), but with your video I finally finished the timing belt, and guess what? It works. I have been going through an unimaginable life storm for 3 years, and I kid you not when I say that this has been the 1st positive sign of accomplishment. Thanks so much.

Many thanks John. Appreciate the time and effort you put in to making the videos. I live down here in Australia and will soon be doing my granddaughter's 1.6L Hyundai Getz ( which looks very much like an US Accent). Thanks again, it always helps to watch someone do the job before finding the snags out for yourself. Cheers.

Thanx for a great video. I've done my '99 Accent twice (60k and 120k) and you know what your doing! I do auto repairs at my synogogue for people who otherwise can't afford it at no charge for labour. When they tell me they don't have the money to replace the timing belt(or other maintenance) I tell them ''wait 'till the timing belt breaks. Then you REEEAAAAALLLLY won't have the money! ($2500 for an engine) Usually after hearing that, they find the money to get it done.Thanx again! G-d bless.Shep

Thanks a lot for the video, I found that except for reinstalling the water pump/power steering pulleys, it wasn't really necessary to separate the engine mount. I just did my first timing belt change on my 2003 Accent, it had 161,000 miles on it, the original belt was in pristine condition....I was AMAZED LOL.

Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to make these videos, they really helped me understand how to make these repairs! The Hanyes/Clymers manuals don't give any of the details you really need to know as you do here, so without seeing a demonstration, I'm sure I'd wouldn't have made my belt changes properly. After I made my replacements I took a trip from MN to Idaho-over 4000 miles both ways with no troubles at all.

I needed to change the belt but I only dared when I found your video! I and a friend did it on a 05. It took 4h and we had 0 experience. This was a 2 person job for amateurs but its really possible for anyone thanks to you! Because of you I decided to do it myself. Instead of paying 650$ and wait 3 hours with a eh coffee I spent 150$ (includes gas, the belt and the tensioner and a 12pack of expensive beer and meals) so I saved 500$ and I had a blast doing it with a friend! Really, many thanks.

John: Watched before I started, didn't finish as I need to replace the idler pulley and can't get one till tomorrow. I got the old belt off and discovered the one I got at Autozone was wrong. Turns out the box was right with the wrong belt inside. Any way I didn't need to take off the motor mount or jack up the engine. Your video sure helped me get my ducks in a row. THANKS ! ! !

Hi John, Great video; you basically did it with one hand while a kitty wanted o steal some of the secrets. I also have a 1.6 2001 Accent, MI car just moved o FL) with 108K miles on it. Never changed the timing belt. Removed the cover and appears to be in excellent order for what I can see. Mine is a California model and the manual does not say that the timing belt needs to be replaced...just inspected.

Mr, John I got a Question sir.I own a 02 Accent 1.6 bought it new it has around 170000 on it I replaced the belt 2 times already but on my way home a couple days ago It shut off and when I tried to start it I heard a bunch of clanging so I pulled it home and tore it apart to Find that the Tensioner pulley for the Timing belt actually broke off,(NOT A GOOD THING) anyway I took it all apart took the valve cover off to make sure #1 valves were closed and slowly turned the Crank not Feeling any resistants at all Im hoping I didnt bend any valves but before I pull the head Im gonna slap a belt and Tensioner on to see now my Question is as long as #1 valves are closed and the marks are lined is the cams set right and as Far as the Crank it is lined up also but as long as it is on the mark as well that would mean Number 1 piston is TDC correct so I can put the belt on????????

I discovered when I was trying to break the bottom pulley bolt that I cracked the upper cam shaft spindle. In removing it to replace it I accidentally moved the whole spindle. I also noticed the the bottom is not set on top dead center. When lining these top and bottom spindles up to the top dead center marks what precautions should I take? As I understand these are intervention engines. So I am a bit concerned about the right direction to turn the spindles, and if I can turn then individually?
@snaponjohn100
@snaponjohn100 11 лет назад
That is why you remove the motor mount. After the engine is raised, you have enough space to work on the pulleys. Make sure to use a piece of wood on the floor jack plate. Raise up the engine at the oil pan. God bless. John

Also I decided that I might as well replace the water pump while I'm at it, do you have any advice about changing that out? Thank you for the video and any help that you can provide.

if it helps i work at hyundai and what you'll have to do it remove the whole knuckle assemby, meaning you need to removed the balljoint, strut, axe and tierod end from the knuckle than proceed to go to a shop and ask them to press out the bearing and pressin in the new one, unless of course you own your own press

Ghost of Bill Cooper do you have an impact gun? If you don’t have Access to air tools rent an electric one. It’ll come right loose with it impact. If it’s so tight that the engine start to turn over remove a spark plug and stuff a rope into the cylinder
@GhostOfBillCooper
@GhostOfBillCooper 6 лет назад

@GhostOfBillCooper
@GhostOfBillCooper 6 лет назад
Its counter clockwise to remove it correct? And what kind of rope should i use? I'm worried about leaving debris in the cylinder
@snaponjohn100
@snaponjohn100 6 лет назад
Ghost of Bill Cooper Yes it is counterclockwise. I’m just suggesting rope because you can easily pull it back out all you’re doing is fighting something to take up space a cylinder so that when it tries to rotate it get stopped. I would say any fairly large diameter nylon rope will be fine. Remember it’s not gonna be hot or anything it’s just going to be inside there for a moment

I have an '05 Hyundai Accent. Is the crankshaft position sensor located near the belts? I've been told it is on the left front side of the engine or it's on the back of the engine.
@tjclt250r
@tjclt250r 9 лет назад
if you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine the crank sensor is to the right of the exhaust manifold...look at the oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold and follow the wire to the plug...below that plug is the connecter for the crank sensor...follow from there and you will see the crank sensor....like I said its to the right of the exhaust manifold and is held in with a 10 mm bolt

Hi John, and wow! Thanks for the videos. I was driving (down a hill) and the car lost all pressure and cut off immediately. From the symptoms and watching your video (part 1 and 2), I know it is the timing belt. My question is: Is there possibility that the pistons and valves didn't collide, causing engine damage since the car lost power and cut off right away? And is there any way to check without going through this whole process?
@snaponjohn100
@snaponjohn100 10 лет назад
I don't think so. Someone else my know of a way. That is part of the compression system. The belt times everything so that the valves close and open at the right time.
@carleynorthcoast1915

I can't figure out just from watching this video why the engine had to be lifted up. Is it just to make more space?
@snaponjohn100
@snaponjohn100 6 лет назад
carley northcoast yes. That is exactly why. If you don’t lift it up the pulleys of the engine are too close to the side of the vehicle so you can’t get in there.

Why do the dots have to be lined up before the belt is changed?, seems like if you didn't move anything, it should work just fine?
@morganthatcher6502
@morganthatcher6502 7 лет назад
Its to time the engine when you put the belt back on. You could just make sure to not move the crank or cam but its better to just line up the marks in case one of them moves. Also my recommendation for the crankshaft pulley is to get a bigger impact gun.

snaponjohn100 Hey! Thanks for the super helpful guide. It's definitely super thorough and helpped me with my friend to change my belt. However we ran into an issue after the belt had been changed. I was just getting off of the freeway and was on low RPM's for the engine when it just cut out. We quickly found out the timing belt had snapped. My friend said it was pretty much 100% sure the engine was dead. So we got the part to try it anyways, changed it and the engine started right up. He had not put the other two belts onto the engine yet, but it was running and shortly after he revved the engine only to hear a sharp crack and the engine died. When we tried to restart the engine, the belt wouldn't move, yet the part on the bottom pulley was spinning. Is it possible that something on that bottom pulley broke and it's an easy fix? Or would it mean the engine is dead dead?

John its me again. I ran into a problem. What is the trick to getting that power steering/ water pump pulley back on? I cant see where to line the holes up and there is barely any room to move my hands. I got the engine jacked up but the water pump still isn't high enough to clear that fender well. How far will that thing jack up before damage the other mounts? Can you jack it high enough where the pump clears the fender well? I jacked until I started hearing creaking noises.

There is a switch in the trunk latch. When grounded, trunk is open. Check the wire to see is it is shorted to ground.

Hey John, I have a 2002 hyundai accent 1.6L and I'm trying to remove the crank bolt and it simple won't budge. What did you use to take it out and what way does it turn cause I've tried everything and cannot even make it budge.

Robert Custer Use an impact gun. Counter clock-wise.

I´ve also had this problem. I have a tip; homemade rusted boltloosener; 50%aceton and 50% Automatic Transmission Fluid. Leave it for a few days, then try again. Be careful, just on the bolt n nothing on the engine or belt... then try again, drip some more, try again. It will budge from this, I´m sure! just be careful, since acetone is flammable.., think it evaporates, but do this at the end of the day

Just wanna say; a torch test showed this demanded up to 5 times less torque than WD -40 (swedish rust solving spray). Thats a fair review i believe since I have experienced the difference myself in transmission bolts that were stuck, like night & day really.., once the penetrating fluid seaps in... this is what they use at workshops I´ve heard.. diesel can also be useful mixed in on other parts than the engine for rust removal.. heat is also a friend when it comes to metal moving.. but I wouldnt use propane near oil plastic or engine parts...
