Part 34 and it's just a quick update because the whole painting process of the repaired area of the offside didn't go to plan and it delayed every stage since then.
Long story short - I painted the repaired areas with acrylic primer and topcoat in order to protect the primered panels. As you may know, if you're using conventional primer coats, you shouldn't leave it unprotected for too long since primer will eventually absorb moisture in the air - even if your workshop or garage is weather tight and 'dry'.
Unfortunately the top coats reacted badly with the primer and it annoyed me so much I walked away from this project. After a few weeks (which included the 40 degree C heatwave, I eventually went back in and sanded it all back and started again. This time I used Plastikote's gloss black primer & top coat over their primer product and so far - it seems to have worked.
Lesson learned is don't assume a manufacturers paint is compatible with another's primer even if they're both 'acrylic' formulation.
The plan is to eventually get the car fully resprayed but only when it's completely finished. In the meantime it will just get repaired areas painted so it can be MOT'd and driven as a 'rolling restoration'
