This guy embarrassed all those guit-slingers who thought speed and shredding chops were where it's at. Pure emotion, here. Every note was drenched in it. Timeless and sublime. For awhile, he and Danny Kirwan, two damaged souls, rose to unequalled flights of brilliance.

Beautiful comment that captures it really well. I'm not sure any other guitarist ever really came close to what Peter could achieve, and since Danny wanted to *be* Peter, they were quite something else playing together. If only they had managed to keep it going for a few more years together...

This is my Fleetwood Mac. The original Mac, far outweighing what the band eventually became in the 70s.

Eric Clapton was once described as "god" but Peter green was the emperor or axis bold as love if any of you know just what I'm talking about........Peter green was is and always will be the king of English blues guitar....... Long live our king

I couldn't agree with you more. Fleetwood Mac after Peter were a shallow bag compared to Green's fiery ascendant blaze of sun & light on a blue world. Once BB. King was asked what he thought of the current crop of guitar heroes . He paused & said "How's Greenie going"? No one else was mentioned lol

But Peter was the "green god". Hold both in same regard... And both felt that about each others style and playing.

Clapton was decent in the 60’s, with The Yardbirds, The Bluesbreakers and Cream….but he was no Peter Green! There’s no contest.

@@jamesbuster1955 Half of the songs on the middle lineup were golden! I have a F.M. playlist from all three periods, I don't get much better relaxation with any other band for the versatility and mood settings. From the first record of 1968 through Tusk, the weight of their contributions to the blues legacy AND to popular music is undeniable!

I love the concerts from 1970. Peter had to convince the band to stretch out the album cuts to jam and combine a few songs to help make those 15 minute plus jams. Peter got this idea from his time on the same bill with the Dead. Stretching out the Madge songs made for an amazing 17 minute jam. Mick Fleetwood said he was not into the jams but his best drum work comes on the extended Then Play On mixes like The Green Manalasi, Rattlesnake shake, Underway and The Madge Sessions. When Peter was asked to come out of retirement when Jeremy left to serve Jesus Peter wanted Black Magic Women to be a 20 to 25 minute jam incorporating songs from Then Play On. This was all made possible due to the connection Peter and Danny had. These 1970 shows show how important Danny was to the Mac sound. Peter face Danny confidence and Danny gave Peter a band member to play off on that could take over and carry the sound when needed. They complimented each other with their unique styles. RIO Danny and Peter.

I am reminded of the the idea of Complimentary playing off what one hears from The Other, while experiencing a certain kind of different sameness. the same way, but diverse in practice. I have read that Danny Kirwan became Peter Green's protege, and so your musical observation makes sense to me, having grown up in the late 60's and heard these guys play- stuff like "Then Play On", "Oh Well, pt. 1&2", Green Manalishi with the 2-pronged horn"... But this time hearing them i am reminded of Mick's fast-paced, but steady-driving-drum-beat, and also John McVie stepping out there on the bass, with percussion. I realize more with time how important the music of that time, including Fleetwood Mac and others are to our cultural knowledge and development; i mean the ordinary citizen kind.

Completely agree. My favorite in that regard was Madge Session #1 from The Vaudeville Years. In my opinion, it was Mick and McVie at their absolute best. Probably helped that they co-wrote the song. Also, Danny was a lesser known and appreciated complement to and with Peter. Together, there was no equal.

Peter Green was a BADASS his demons led to some of the greatest music we are blessed to have today. He did not fear letting his life's problems become the force behind his blues inspired magical guitar playing. He was not a follower he led and was exploring music that was ahead of it's time ,pure magic! He was also one of the most gentle egoless people in rock being know for being a giver, and those that give will receive in multiples. He was blessed with many gifts one of which was his unique tone on guitar. God bless you Peter, play on.

Peter was once a bass player I read that the bass solo on The Green Manalasi was Peter playing. Anybody know if this is true. Love Peter and his devoted fans.

Dave i've spent decades researching this gig since i first taped it off the radio in about 1987. PG was indeed a bassist in his very earliest days as a musician. And yes - it IS him playing the bass solo - he swaps to a Fender 6 string bass with "the speed of an eagle" (as the compere puts it in the unedited recording). HTH.

I remember "Coming Your Way" as 21 year old kid, and think of it now as having been fortunate to be "around" this music and considered songs like "Underway" and "The Green Manalishi" to be to my ears then as spiritually cool, in the way that we sometimes hear music that seems familiar, even if it is the 1st time to hear it. i suppose that might be an example of, "The Manifestation of the Transcendental Object in the Work of Art.", or an example that might give credence to the theory of it. That art is what "invites us back." Fleetwood Mac, and in particular, the Peter Green & Danny Kirwan, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and later Christine McVie, comprises my favorite 'Mac time, as lived then - but it was the hardest time; and that's how music can help explicitly well, like when we pause somewhere along the Way, and say, "Oh Well." Underway.

Thanks for the choice of songs. 4 great songs showing the power of the three guitarist. Peter's " Green Manalashi" kicks ass here followed by Danny's best contribution "Coming Your Way" and finishing with Jeremy doing his slide magic on "Stranger Blues". The outro of "Before The Beginning" shows the beautiful gift Peter Green was blessed with by mesmerizing us with music that was ahead of it's time. Bless you Peter for sharing your gift. Your music will play on ......

Bass solo at 5.30 is by Peter Green. I was told this by , ahem, Mick Fleetwood when I interviewed him at the time this album was released. ( Apologies for name dropping). Certainly doesn’t sound like John McVie who I think plays a 4 string with his fingers, whereas this bass solo is played on 6 string bass by someone using a pick.

Fleetwood Mac after Peter were a shallow bag compared to Green's fiery ascendant blaze of sun & light on a blue world. Once BB. King was asked what he thought of the current crop of guitar heroes . He paused & said "How's Greenie going"? No one else was mentioned lol
