Hello John, nicely done my friend. Like you I really enjoyed welding/brazing when I was a mechanic. I once set the owner's nephew on fire while adjusting an exhaust manifold pipe with a torch. It was just the sleeve on his coveralls and we put it out pretty quickly, but loads of fun trying to fit jobber parts to a Lada. Regards, Dave (PS some of the other mechanics thought that I put him out too fast)

Hi Dave.. Hahaaa.. That was real funny 😀 .. Glad no harm came to the poor fella though. Who did you work for Dave? I started off in a garage that did all makes/models.. But went on to work for Nissan (I loved nissan as they were seemingly assembled with disassembly in mind,) So easy to work on. Unfortunately most of the UK Nissan dealerships closed down, not because of me ☺. Then I went to work for Ford 🙁. Take care my friend John

@@OrbiterElectronics Hi John, I worked for a BMW/Saab/Lada/Niva dealership which then expanded to Hyundai and Suburu. They had to drop the Lada/Niva line to get the Hyundai and Suburu lines. I ended up catching pneumonia one winter and it brought on asthma which ended my mechanic days. Stay well, my friend. Dave

Hi Dave, Ah ok understood my friend, so you worked on nice cars too. It seems that mechanics/engineering is certainly not the healthiest of environments, or wasn;t a good few years ago, as we are the proof :) Take care Dave Speak soon John

Nicely done John. I need to order up some of those micro ports myself. I have two devices in need of them. Wish I could buy an assortment of them. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Buddy, good to see you my friend. Yes those port packs are always handy to have around. They're still always available on eBay but don't seem to show up using general search terms you'd think would be appropriate. Try searching ebay with these terms Buddy... '40 models micro usb charge ports'. Cheers John

Smashing neat job john :-D If i had to replace one of those sockets with the ordinary stuff i have, i would have to use a 1/2 inch dia cutting disk in a dremel type of tool to remove the legs from the body. Then heat the connections untill it falls off. Yes a bit nasty, but i would have less chance of ripping the plating out. Its too easy to do, :-( The gold plated pins looked quite dull, maybe tin them before placing the socket, maybe easyer to solder y/n ?

Hi Harv, Hahaa, that was great 😁.. I know you though, and know you could do it.. Easy peasy! Yes pre-tinning would likely help mate but I don't bother, I would though if say the port was a used one etc, but these were straight out of the factory reel and looked ok to me. As you know though the flux helps with any light oxidation 👍 Cheers Harv John

Just curious John, why not use one or two of the small pins to temporarily anchor the port to the PCB instead of the two corners and then have to move the entire part? It may be that using the small pins won't ensure a nice flat orientation to begin with. Know you do this all the time and that may in fact be the best way to do it. I learn something new with each one of your videos! Thanks John!

Hi Dino 👍 .. Yes sure you can do it that way my friend. It's not super critical. I just like to secure the port from a solid point or two first, this way if any of the pins need a little persuasion to be bent to their allocated pads there's no problem. If a pin or two are soldered first though and you then have to move the port, your putting a little stress on the tiny solder joints, so they're not then in their natural relaxed position. I guess it comes from my welding history :) Cheers John

Nice job...my question for anybody is when you are soldering the 5 pins down to the board how do you keep the solder from bridging across the pins?
@OrbiterElectronics
@OrbiterElectronics 3 года назад
Thanks Larry 👍. To help prevent bridges on such small pins try using narrow guage solder wire and flux. For pins this small 0.25mm solder wire is a good choice. You can still use larger guage wire but bridges are easier to create with that. Bridges are no problem though, just go over them with some solder braid to wick up the excess solder, using extra flux if necessary.

ive bought parts like that from china in bulk...but, the quality of the metal is very poor and i throw away all of them 200pieces(india)

The ones I have don't seem too bad. In fact I've used them on a few things and they're still in use today. I think there are differing qualities from different manufacturers.
