PlayStation Technical Support Interview: PS5 Error CE-108255-1
In this video I interview a PlayStation Technical Support agent. I state the issues that a lot of people have with PS5 Error CE-108255-1 and also CE-108262-9. I asked him tough questions on what to do when this happens and what to expect from Sony PlayStation going forward.
The technician was able to provide a good explanation on some work-arounds. The tech also answered some key questions, but the biggest question could not be fully answered unfortunately. Find out more in the video.

Thanks Brother....I got my replacement from Sony. I got my original on 19th November, sent it to Sony on 20th, took about a week to get to the Sony Service Centre and got a replacement on 2nd December. It's a different unit as the serial number is different. I would suggest you send it to Sony directly as it's within warranty. From a conversation with another person in Sony Client Services, it's a common error code and known issue and Sony seemed prepared for it...it's a hardware issue, as I think you felt when the guy was talking about adjusting your graphics. During my safe start up I spent almost 6 hours trying to troubleshoot why the code kept coming up...I changed the graphic display and also changed my monitor as well. You hit it right on the head when you stated that other consoles were fine. My replacement console sounds different and has virtually no lags during setup, nor louder disc drive sounds, which I noticed when setting up my original console. In the UK they won't send you a brand new console. They appear to have a stockpile at the Service Centres, just for this scenario. Additionally, the invoice I got with the replacement did not state the reason for the replacement, so I called up Sony Client Services and the person said that no reason was given and if the guy you dealt with doesn't know, that's worrying...I wonder why, if it was a graphics issue, why did Sony not release a press release or even have it on the website troubleshooting page? Strange.

that is great news. Hopefully others see that a replacement console will help them. I think that some consoles may be just software issues, but you are correct when you said Sony prepared for this. Its strange that consoles are getting replaced pretty quickly. There have been others that stated the same. I wish they communicated better. The lack of communication makes it seem like they don't want people to know that there is a chance that they may get a faulty product. I wonder if they are stalling for some people to get more consoles to replace. Not sure. Hopefully they release a patch for the users that can be fixed with software.

I don’t know, I’ve seen different scenarios and I’ve come to a conclusion. Sony did screw up hardware wise, but not for everyone. This is how the issue happens (from what I have found) the software transmits data to the hardware, but the hardware basically gets confused and crashes the game. I’ve heard to just wait for a patch or an announcement or what happens. Although, if this completely crashes your system rather than just the game, then it is a hardware issue. All in all, I would just wait for a patch or something before sending it in. Wait at least a month as I know the warranty is at least two months. If it ends up being a hardware issue, then send it in. I am just waiting and not even touching my ps5 until a patch or announcement comes out.

Okay, so I bought an Xbox series X on Black Friday. Waited 13+ hours for the PS5, but those in line before me got the PS5s. I ended up trading a guy the brand new unopened Xbox for a brand new unopened PS5. So, I don’t have a receipt or anything. Can I still send it back?

Homie(PS IT tech) needs a FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT raise. Spoke very clearly, thoroughly, was patient in listening to you and responding with relevant/concise answers and kept the upmost professionalism with you throughout the call displayed in the video. That is extremely rare to get customer service like that. Nothing is his fault and provided valid “quick fix” suggestions although may be workarounds, people just want to be able to use the product at this point. Ray tracing included or not; I have faith all that will come down the line. Beautiful video

He did an amazing job. He honestly went above and beyond. I appreciate him allowing me to record the convo. Its unfortunate that Sony still doesn't know how to resolve this issue and is not giving people any ideas on what to do right now. Do they wait, do they return it or exchange it? I wish they just communicated better on what to do next.

What a helpful thorough guy on the other end, hats off to him. I’ve had the error CE-108262-9 once while playing Miles Morales, but other than that its been real smooth, with the only “problem” being a bit if coil whine. Im playing on a 4k HDR tv like yourself, set into the game mode. I really really hope this get sorted for all of you soon! WRC 9 graphics were so good i had a 2 day motion sickness migraine🤯 - it will be worth the wait!

I got more help from this video than what PlayStation have given me in 2 weeks. Here in the UK is seems we're still getting mixed messages too. Some people allowed to send consoles back, others advised to wait for a fix. The steps he gave you didn't work for me but hopefully some people have had success. Did a good job calling out the guy a couple of times and he actually seemed genuine.

So many techs have been on different pages and telling people to either send in the console or to wait for a patch. This guy did very well and was helpful. Unfortunately, still makes me wonder what they plan to do with these consoles that are not working and how long will they make people wait for a fix they may not fix anything. I can't believe i'm watching this 2 years down the line. I bought a brand new console in June this year, and within a couple of weeks it started crashing/freezing. Unbelievable that Sony have known of this issue ans has STILL done nothing about it. I'm in the UK and trying to get through to Playstation Support has been the most frustrating thing ever. I will be contacting Sony on Monday, and i'm dreading it. All I want, is what I paid a lot of money for. Thanks to your video on this, it is encouraging to know it isn't just me that's having to go through this. Thank you.

@@jaleelthecelticsfan9663 One of the reasons I pulled the trigger on buying a ps5 was to play a particular game since it runs laggy on ps4 and it is the only game that it crashes on. Runs fine until I try to exit/save and then it crashes. Ark is the game.

Great video bro! You bringing up the fact that disabling ray-tracing isn't really a solution is exactly what I was hoping you'd say, because it's literally supposed to be a highlight of the PS5 itself. Sony telling us to basically set it up to run like a base PS4 is not a fix. Keep up the good fight!!

1 year later, error code CE-108255-1 is still prevalent. Brand new PS5 GOD of War bundled edition; purchased on 11-12-2022. I can't even load Astro's Play Room. I've tried every troubleshooting method, I've tried using alt accounts, I've tried using multiple monitors. I will be returning this console due to the incompetence of Sony's software engineers. Very, very unfortunate.

Appreciate you doing this! Finally was able to get Spiderman MM to launch. I couldn't even make it to the main menu before getting the 82551 error. I changed the game default to Performance mode as suggested.

Excellent video! Kudos to the interviewer and to the technician (PS IT support). I got a PS5 chassis C (1216) digital version only because I would like to play Horizon Forbidden West on PS5. The game keeps freezing/crashing and returning CE-108255-1. I tried many workarounds (rebuild database, clear console cache, reinstall the game, Factory restore PS5 (Safe mode 6). Nothing fixed it. One thing I noticed was, when I deactivated HDCP the game started crashing much more frequently. Therefore, I support the theory there's a big issue with Video/Screen support. Just to clarify I was running PS5 on an old TDK Systems 40' FULL HD TV. That said, 1080P no HDR.

You're welcome. Hopefully these steps will work for you. If not, we need people to keep calling Sony and continuously put pressure on them to release a patch sooner, or to let people replace the consoles. That's the only way companies will do something.

I’ve still got an issue with mine whereby I have AC Valhalla PS4 disc copy which upgrades to PS5 version but when I delete the PS4 copy off the storage to free up space as soon as I turn the console back on it re adds the PS4 copy to downloads and starts installing again. I thought the latest software update rectified this. It hasn’t on mine! Cheers for any help in advance

I got my PS5 this past Saturday and so far no problems. My cousin is having the same issues you have and he didn’t know if he should send it in or wait for an update. I’m glad you did this video. You are a lot of help bro

It depends if they want to wait. we have all been waiting since day1 and there has been no updates or anything for this issue. So if he has a chance to switch it out, take that chance. But for the rest, the game days gone 2h after installing the game an error occurred like a few ps4 games I own. I don't know if I should replace the console, I bought it in March 2023.

@@Not2NerdyENT also some info, the quality does nothing. I’m on a small 1080p tv and I get the error. I’ve already tried all the troubleshooting steps on the call and they offered a repair/replacement. They let me call back later with the case number to get it in case they can’t patch it luckily

10 months later this issue still occurs… had my PlayStation 5 for 32hours, got a max playtime of 2hours on ps5 games on it before it started crashing and getting worse and worse. After rebooting to factory settings, my login screen started to crash multiple times aswell… 2 days in my position trying to get it fixed, and i already took it back to the store to send it up for repairs… absolutely fkin bananas Sony what a terrible job….

18/12/23 and this just hit me today. Issues started with spiderman 2 but now affects all my other games. Console is a month old. Reset console, cleared cache, did the safe mode reset and uninstalled the game and reinstalled. Did this ever get fixed?

It’s doing this to me on the new CoD i just disconnected from my internet and started the game then reconnected once i passed the point I usually crash at then I turn my internet back on the console but I haven’t tried to connect to CoD services yet it might boot me off again if I do :/

I was having the same issue with every PS5 game I tried (except Demon's Souls, weird) and quite a few PS4 games as well. I finally was able to work with a manager at Best Buy and they ordered me a replacement that took about a week to arrive. I took in the bad PS5, picked up the new one, and haven't had a single problem since setting up the new one. I did nothing different than I did before, and my TV, HDMI cord, and display setting hasn't changed. The PS5 replacement is a different serial number than the last one I had. This makes me think it is a hardware issue with some units in production. Again, just my personal experience, but this video just makes me think even more that it's hardware, and Sony doesn't want to say anything official about it until after the holidays when they sell the most units (or something like that). Reminds me of the RROD issue with the 360 back in the day.

That's a good observation. Thank you for posting this. I'm glad its working great now. Hopefully, Sony can figure out a patch, but I think you are right about a good number of them having some hardware issues with this error message. But some of them may be god with a patch.

For me it was the resolution making it crash so I'm actually surprised he said that I had it at 2160p lowered it to 1080 and those game crashes haven't happened

Thats good that it hasnt crashes since the settings changed. Still worrisome that it doesnt seem like it can detect resolutions properly or 4K speeds. Strange.

Where is the link to that video I saw it but can't find it now. I've got my ps5 back out of the box hoping the update would fix as well that. I changed to 1080i and didn't work 😕. Now I will try 1080p and run down other screen resolutions. Any tips or suggestions you have I could try would be greatly appreciated!

I'm new to the ps5... And here I am, brand new console with this error. 108255. Unbelievable, your video was posted 2 years ago, still no permanent fix. I'm pretty frustrated, I like to hold off on buying these consoles because of initial bugs etc. The irony, I'm stuck with an initial bug 🤦

Since the latest COD Warzone Season 4. I got the console from Argos in the UK a month ago or so. It's now 21st June 2021 and I'm having this issue. The majority of time I can get to the Warzone menu where you can change your load out, etc, but that's as far as I can get. Almost always errors-out when I try to join friends party's. It happens at other times too but that always seems to trigger it, and actually creates the error for the friends I'm joining as well. Looking at the date of your video to today's date I'd say they've obviously not made any sort of downloadable fix, unfortunately. Looks like I'll have to send it back

Great great great video!.. you asked all the questions that’s should have been questioned...the waiting game is over with Sony now, it’s been 3 weeks and still no confirmation that’s it’s software or hardware. Either be transparent with the consumers or people are going to start returning their consoles.

Thats probably the worst part about this, is the lack of communication. The fact that they think its ok for a customer to wait until its fixed is unreal. Especially the people that cant play any games. Either have them send it in to get a working one, or confirm how long they think it will take for a fix. Let people decide if they want to wait for a patch or not. Don't decide that for them.

As a person who has a ps5 with this issue and spoken to multiple tech support guys, they don’t have a clue dude. It needs to be addressed properly by Sony, give us some timescales about when this will be fixed. I’ve got a £500 paperweight at the moment and I’m pissed off about it.

@@Naryoril I agree with both of you in a way. You cant look too much into these techs not knowing to well. However, you can look into the bigger picture. They each have notes and scripts on these error messages. This means the Top people know the issue. The fact that they are not reading off fixes is concerning. Even if a fix is on its way, time is working against them. Some people have had the consoles since the 12th. If this was a normal defective percentage that Sony expected during launch, they would just have these users send in their consoles just to replace it and get it over with. However, the fact that they are not accepting too many back, and they would rather tell people to wait, isnt good. They need to communicate better like you said.

I had this same issue: PS5 - CE - 108255-1 and tried all the troubleshooting and then spent 90 minutes on the phone today with support and ran through all these same fixes. Nothing worked...I couldn't play any of the PS5 games, they would crash at the loading screen before getting into the games. Luckily I found these videos (great job btw!) and read through the comments. I was able to use the temporary fix of forcing my system to 1080p until there is a fix of some kind. I can now at least fully play NBA 2K21, albeit with a huge visual downgrade.

That is great that you are able to play the game now. But yea, this work-around is unacceptable. I have a PS4 pro as well. Why would I want that to upscale to 4k while I have a PS5 set to a lower resolution. It makes no sense. Hopefully a patch can fix this. But the fact its taking so long is worrisome.

Spoke with Sony customer service about the problem. Was easy to get them to send the box out for repair or new one. Turnaround is 3 - 4 bus days to receive the box and 10 - 15 bus days for the return. Est. 3 - 4 weeks total.

@@ZachWackAttack This workaround worked for me when I started to play Black Ops Cold War. Just got my PS5 4 days ago, it crashed before I can press start. It was doing that for Astro’s Playroom also. Hopefully Sony patch this pretty soon. I pray it’s not a hardware issue but an HDR issue

@@Not2NerdyENT Before I did anything I updated the software. Safemode first, update then, deleted Astros Playroom, then dl it reinstalled it , and played it for about a couple of hours. Then I installed and played FF7 Remake a bit, going to play Spiderman and Miles Morales later today. So happy! No issues..so far. Ill keep you posted.

I called Sony support an hour ago. They told me their specialists were working on the problem but they still didn't know what the cause was yet. Couldn't guarantee an update would fix this. Refused to send a replacement, saying they weren't for this particular error code. I insisted on it, got transferred to a manager, he gave me the same runaround. Got kinda awkward with me demanding a replacement, and him saying "Unfortunately we're not doing returns for this error code at this moment." over and over. Kind of at a loss at what to do now. After this phone call I'm starting to think this won't be fixed with an update.

If you are already set with sending it in for a replacement, you need to change your wording when you call. Need to say that the console doesn't stay on or bootup all the time. You have to make it sound worse than that error message. I don't want people to lie to anyone, however, you paid for a working Device and they are not giving you any options to fix this issue. They are making you wait for a fix that may never come. Try calling back, eventually you will get someone that will help.

@Dynatsu C I’ve spoke to a Sony specialist if it could be an account issue and the response was flat out “no”. So idk if that was the truth, or a lie just to hurry up and get me off the phone. However the same PS4 game I have on my PS4 pro works perfectly, but just doesn’t work when playing on my ps5. And that stupid error code shows up. So I don’t think it’s an account issue IMO.

Just wish we had more as to if it was hardware or software as it seems to crash random. Sometimes I can get hours if not days without crashing the other times it will crash in 30 minutes. Really at this point we just want some kind of answers as I don't wanna have to get a replacement if I don't have to as everything else works perfectly fine like it runs cool, It is quiet, let's fast. Which is why I really like the console I have and don't want to risk running into any problems in trying a new one. On thing I am curious on is what are your personal thoughts on the situation do you think it is a serious problem also what are your thoughts on it being hardware or software?

My personal opinion is that some consoles get this error from hardware issues, while others get the same error due to the software itself. I think that Sony may know this, but is trying to find a way to separate the consoles that are just software issues from the ones that are caused by hardware. I have no proof of this though. Just going by some of the work-arounds they provided. Lowering the resolution, turning off HDR, and turning off ray-tracing, these are things people do to their PCs when their games cant run properly. This happens when your GPU or other specs are not good enough to run the games. Makes you wonder, why would Sony tell you to turn off those features, unless they think that something on your console cant handle the specs required to play the games. Which shouldn't be the case if its just a software issue. Other people have the same software, and they are not required to lower the specs. I could be wrong though.

@Not2NerdyENT , Saw your other video & now watched this one.. I wanted to chime in.. I own a 4k Sony Bravia 60hz tv with HDMI 2.0 .. No game crashes accept for Miles Morales.. So I set the rest mode to Never.. Set the 4K transfer to -2 , it ran solid, until I read that there was an update to fix the rest mode issue.. So I set that back to on.. I don't have much issues, but now I set the 4K transfer speed to Normal , no game crashes, while rest mode was on, until one day it crashed.. So I left the 4K Transfer speed to Normal , Rest mode to Never, game settings on 30FPS with Ray tracing too.. No issues.. What i find interesting is the Rest mode is now set to Never, but if I disconnect my controller & turn off my tv, the PS5 automatically goes to Rest mode by default.. Anyways, hope you guys get the remedy soon..

I also has this problem in last friday, When i play ps5 version control around 2 hours, it will appear this fault and make all the games cannot open, I try rebuild the database, reinstall the game and reset the ps5. Those solution also cannot solve the problem, Finally, I give the ps5 to repair maintenance since it has the warranty. Now, still waiting the response to repair engineer from playstation. I think it is hardware issue, It needs to replace the motherboard / ps5 from playstation engineer.

Unfortunately it did not help me. Someone mentioned lowering the resolution helped them. It still bothers me that the suggestions that were made all involved removing key features to the PS5. At that point, what is the point of using it.

Guys I was able to get rid of the 108255-1 error on cod by pressing start button on cod from the main menu then pressing on managed content and downloaded a undownloaded file it worked! Make sure you download every file even the audio files as I only had a missing audio file and it changed everything!

I really hope I have mine fixed now. Mine only gets this on one game I have played and there is no telling when it will happen but has been happening about once per hour. I have tried everything they said to try except a reset of everything, even tried new hard drives cause I was swapping them anyway. After I did the reset yesterday the button layout changed for the game I was playing which I am sure I have never changed. Seems kind of odd that that is what changed especially since the buttons that changed I had wondered why they were that way anyway. The map button was the options button instead of the big center pad and now it is the way I felt it should be. I am not going to say it is fixed yet but time will see.

Thanks for posting this! Has there been any update now in 2022? My PS5 still freezes constantly when playing PS5 games. I’ve tried all recommended solutions (disable rest mode, change HDMI settings, restart, clear cache, rebuild database, factory reset, reinstall system software via USB, etc.)… PS5 games still freeze. I have no issues playing PS4 games saved on an external HDD. Makes me think there’s something wrong with the internal console storage. Unfortunately, my 1 year warranty has passed. I’m curious if installing an M.2 SSD expansion and moving the PS5 games to that would fix the issue.

@@mikeoxlong1434 Nope, even brought it to a local repair shop. They cleaned it, replaced the thermal paste, which usually fixes the PS5's they've worked on and it still freezes playing PS5 games. Definitely has to be a hardware issue.

I'm not sure but this could be a handshake issue between the ps5 and the TV in use i have a samsung 4K HDR and the ps5 so far no issues . On the other hand when i gamed using the ps4 pro and the same tv the screen would black out for 1 second and then again for a few seconds after that it was all good and that happened every time i gamed so which makes me think that there maybe a handshake issue that's causing crashing and freezing with the new hmdi 2.1 cable messing things up for none hmdi 2.1TV's which could be fixed via a firmware update.

That can be a possibility. The only issue I have with that is that I also have the Xbox Series X. That also has 2.1 connection but at a higher bitrate. So Its weird to me that the PS5 would cause issues with a 2.1 connection. The unfortunate part is that Its almost been a month and there still hasnt been any real communication on what to do. Hopefully they fix this for others.

I think that code is too general to narrow down to one thing… but one solution I never saw anywhere but actually fixed the issue for me was to swap to a new HDMI cord. Hasn’t happened since. I would get graphics glitches on games like ff16 then it would crash. Changing my HDMI cord has stopped it completely. If you’ve tried everything and it still doesn’t work it’s definitely worth trying. Lemme know if it helped you

For thos still getting this, but are only getting it after a while of playing, i noticed that when the hdmi port at the back of ps5 gets got it causes this error too, ive pulled my console even more away from the wall and it helped but unfortunately not a permanent fix as when it gets hot after an hour or so it crashes again, so to me it seems like its the ps5 hdmi port thats the problem.

Well, I'm having this stupid CE-108255-1 error while trying to play Trails of Cold Steel 2. I'm at the end of the game and it keeps crashing after a certain cutscene on the airship. I can't go beyond that point and it's really pissing me off. I'm going to try and back up all my data then reset the PS5 to factory conditions and hope that fixes the problem. This video was 2 years ago and this error still hasn't been fixed!?!? WTF!?

I got my console a few months back and i have started to get this error code CE-108255-1 sometimes mainly on back 4 blood and demons souls everything else i play seems fine it has to be a software error

Lol thats what it sounded like. I was like, nooo that shouldn't be the issue. Especially since the Series X works on all the TVs and monitors I tested.

3 years later and with the PS5 slim and still having the same issues smdh. I guess i should have went with XBOX. Fuck Sony

i got this error for the first time in may(2023) playing bioshock 2. while i was playing the game it crashed and closed, then it happened a second time in late june with crash team rumble, loading the battle pass the game crashed. And it happened again today July 7th with Batman Arkham Knight, it seems like he gets it once, and it's going to start happening all the time. I received the console in March, do you think I have to send it for assistance?

Got the PS5 a few weeks ago so no patch / update fixed this apparently, played only 2 games and getting this CE-108255-1 error on both of them. I followed the instructions according to the Sony website with rebuilding the db and I hope this will fix it

@@seanlloyd2762 actually it didnt happen again but I just played a few games since then and not for too long (1 hour straight max). so far so good

I’m getting that CE-1082551 error after minutes of starting each of my games. I went into safe mode, rebuilt the DB, resetted and resetted/reinstalled the latest system software and it still give me the error. I’m using a Samsung MU6300, same TV for my PS4 Pro. Does this really mean you have to buy an HDMI 2.1 compliant TV?

I dont think every person that has working consoles have TVs with 2.1. There's no way a company can assume people will have that type of TV. I think it was just a work-around until they come up with some sort of solution.

I have the exact same problem. I just got my console serviced, it took about a month due to my console completely bricking and blacking out in the middle of some games, but got it back and. A week later I’m getting this code and barely can even log into a game.

I'm having an issue where my game crashes and gets stuck at 87% for the error in app screen and will stay there for until I power off the PS5. I've waited 2 hours once at the screen and the progress bar won't move and finish. It happeneds 3 times a day

Hey Hector I am having this issue but it makes no sense about the video output, I put my console only connected with Ethernet, ac and accessed via remote play. Opened Astro and it crashes at the exact same time.

October 2021 and the error code is still happening to people. Recently got my hands on a digital edition PS5 and I had to send it to playstation this morning via the FedEx box they send you.. 😔 Customer support told me it might take 20-30 business days to fix.. 😭

yup same. Sent mine in on September 28th, then was delivered on the 29th, then they received it on the October 1st and I haven't gotten any other update on the progress of the repair/replacement other then it telling me its been received. Majority of people say its taken them 10-15 days from when Sony repair receives the device. I don't know if they mean business days or just days. But hopefully you and I get our consoles replaced or fixed and sent back to use very soon! good luck to you!

I first came across this error playing NHL 21 back in January...that recently had a patch where it apparently "fixed" an issue with the PS5 receiving "unexpected errors". I haven't tested it to see if that fixed it or not. As of a few days ago after the PS5s latest update two more games started having this error, Borderlands 3 and Power Rangers Battle for the Grid. They'll play fine and then seemingly at random just crash, then that error comes up...the only games I haven't had issues with as of yet are Destiny 2, Genshin Impact and Code Vein...

Theres no known fix unfortunately. It seems to get progressively worse. Or at least that is what happened to my first 2 consoles. My 3rd consoles has had no issues after many hours of testing. So that is why people say they have perfect consoles and others report crashing. I believe some have faulty hardware.

@@Not2NerdyENT I've gotten this error code twice (ce-108255-1) without knowing why. I've tried plenty of games which all works fine. So 99% of the time everything works good without crashing which makes me think that, in my case, its software related. But I cant be sure though, and I hope it doesn't get worse. Whats your take on this?

Got the same problem since yesterday all games keeps crashing... but the games that i can stream from ps + work fine but when i install them they crash
