I like the way you created depth without the horizon. The white water and the waves in the distance leading the eye up on a diagonal to the top right corner, is very effective. Cool painting. I enjoy the impressionistic vibe from Tad's painting!

The way you gave depth to the ocean without including sky was very effective. I need to try to remember that.

Thanks Michael. Solving that problem opens up a lot of compositional opportunities!

I love how it turned out. Tad’s was great too. I love plein air painting with local groups here in the Austin area. Everyone’s style is so different and it’s cool to see everyone’s work develop. I was thinking about my process and what I see here- I expend a lot of energy on the sketch composition and blocking in, a little refining, and then it seems like ‘where the magic happens’, the final touches of color and brush strokes is what really gives the painting it’s style and magic, and that’s when I am exhausted. 😂 The first 5/6ths of the effort creates the payoff in the home stretch, but by then I’m tired, hot, and just ready to go home. I identified with Tad, stepping back and realizing that wasn’t the story he wanted to tell, then coming back and adding so much color and vibrance. Perhaps I need to get through the first part faster. Or perhaps, I am realizing as I write this, maybe the exhaustion lowers my inhibitions and I quit painting how I think it should be, and allow my imagination to just take over a bit more, make thicker brush strokes, play with the paint a bit more, like you, applying the directional brush strokes heavy with paint there at the end. Thoughts?

I do try to move through the scrub in or block in pretty quickly in order to save energy for the finish. I have also noticed that when things aren't working out I'll start taking chances and experimenting. This often results in discoveries that I wouldn't have made had the painting gone smoothly!

I really like the square format for this scene and the way you zoomed in on it to give us a more intimate look at the rocks and waves. Reminds me to select what's most important and zero in on it. Thanks Michael!

I found that large grey tree behind you guys to be more interesting. Also would have attacked that canvas with a larger brush with gusto. Small brush strokes seem lost. Just my two cents. Been watching George Rowlett lately and that guy is inspiring to say the least. Thanks for the video !

Load the brush ...make a stroke... I'm going to write that on a card and tape it to my easel! Along with big shapes in the blocking in seems to be a good recipe for success ... Great pointers ... Luv tad's brush strokes a little bit of Van Gogh there

Great painting. Liked how you dealt with the lack of a horizon by changing the colour of the water and getting textures and colours of the rocks. Can you tell me roughly how long you give yourself on a painting? From memory, i think you have said in some of the videos its about 1 to 2 hours? Again, thanks for sharing the experience - I'm learning a lot. Cheers Paul
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
Thanks Paul! Most paintings take about two hours. The filming process slows things down a bit but I never go over 3 hours even when filming.

thank you for showing all your tools and materials so clear! by the way do you do the underpainting layer and buff it off like that to create a tone underneath the painting? or to clean / prep the surface of the canvas ?
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
I tone the canvas with burnt sienna because I like when the bits of orange show through in the final painting. It also helps the paint go on easier.

Very nice composition, I love square landscapes/seascapes. So now that you've been in our coast can you tell me a few differences you've seen and do you see yourself painting the mediterranean?
@chamberlainpaintings
@chamberlainpaintings 2 года назад
Thanks Martin! I'd love to paint the Mediterranean. I felt like I could have painted in Antibes, but we were only there for a day. Cannes was nice but a little busy for plein air painting. I love how the Med has beautiful architecture near the water. We don't have that in California. Another difference is the waves. The waves are very small in the Med. That's ok though! It allows for beautiful colors in the shallow water. Very clear water as well!

Good morning a Michael: looks like a great day out west. Love the green water near the big rocks and shore line. Did you use a turquoise color or a teal?A number of months ago you tried Neo Megilp medium. Any opinion about it? Wonderful painting! Strong color. Can almost hear the waves hitting the rocks.
