Don't listen to those that say you are overdoing things or over thinking the process, it's better to over think than to under think and have to redo it now or in the future because you missed a step or a precaution.

Completely agree with you on the zip tape except for one thing. You don’t want to put that cup at the bottom. you only want to do the bottom and the outside. The reason being is if you ever do get water in there you’re creating a boat at the bottom or a tub for that water to sit in it will keep that wood wet and rotted out very quickly.It’s more important to give water A path to Escape then it is to prevent water. Kind of like the difference between having that OSB submerged and having it sitting up against the wall where it could dry. You really wanna leave the back side open, or what would be towards the inside of the house open. It’s better to get it wet and let it dry then it is to seal water in there. One area you’ll see this a lot with OSB and especially that cheap MDF they used to use, is on flooring. You put a nice water seal on it with a vinyl flooring but what you’re doing is trapping water underneath there if it ever gets in and eventually you get some dry rot and that’s where you get soft spots in your floor. Are used to think that painting everything on both sides would be a good idea but that’s bad for wood because it doesn’t let it breathe and dry out, even if you’re building furniture or anything else you should leave the inside pieces unstained or unfinished anyway if you’re going to use some thing that seals and his moisture resistant. Another technique my boss showed me, he owned over 100 houses and he would buy junkie houses and fix them up and rent them. You could put a sacrificial strip at the bottom. If you cut a 4 inch strip of plywood and put that at the bottom if it ever does rot out it’s very easy to tear that out and replace it as opposed to trying to cut into a sheet and having to tear up all the siding and everything later. We didn’t do that a lot but we did that on his house and his cabin. If your walls are exactly 8 feet then that’s going to be a pain but if you’re doing nine or 10 foot walls it’s pretty easy to add a 4 inch strip. A router to cut out your windows is usually a lot easier. I love the metal spacer you made to get that gap. I thought, when you do the upper sheets come out since you’re putting two screws in there, put a loop on there so you can hang it and support your sheet. You could even find a spring or bungees so you can get it close and pull it down into place when you’re ready to put a couple nails in it. That way you don’t have to be as exact when you lift it. Other options might be a counterweight. If you put a pulley on it and the boards weigh 12 pounds and you put a 10 pound counterweight on it it’ll be a lot easier to lift and hold in place and give you flexibility to move up and down as well.

Shane I agree with you on the Zip tape on the bottom you just made a Boat, a place for water to set if it every gets wet.
@ShaneZettelmier
@ShaneZettelmier 2 года назад
@@harryellingsworth8302 yup. When you watch professionalsAnd those have researched it talk about it, it’s almost more important to give Water a way to get out of there than it is to keep it from getting wet. If there’s a huge storm and there’s an inch of water at the base of your wall and The storm blows that water up under the siding or if the pipe ever breaks that water Hass to have a way to get out of there and if not it’s just gonna sit there and rot the wood. I also learned when working for a company that builds decks and porches. You always want to leave part of the word unpainted underneath so the wood itself can dry. If you just paint all of your wood and assemble your deck and that wood is sealed inside that paint, if there’s moisture in there it’s just going to sit and accumulate in one area and you’re going to get wood rot. The base of your walls are notorious for getting rot anyway you have to be very careful with them and they have to have a way to vent and breathe just like the bottom of a roof in your attic Hass to have that air space if you’re going to close off your attic.

I’m gonna watch whether it’s sheathing, or electrical inside. Another great video… stay safe as you start working your way up, but as expected you’re already thinking ahead about that. You have to do the sheet rocking yourself. I am hooked on how you think about what you have to do and make a cool tool to do it. I want to see what kind of tool you will design and manufacture to add to the scaffolding to make the sheet rock install look easy. If you weren't so far away, I would love to come down and work with you for a couple of days. I love doing the impossible myself. I came for the ice machine and watched all of the house build videos over the weekend. You motivated me to order a replacement to the broken ice maker in my side by side refrigerator with one of the universal kits. Its a start. I eventually want to do a complete build of the ice machine. Keep up the great work!

Thank you very much for the support! As for sheet rock, it's very cheap to have a professional install it and finish it here. Hard to not let a pro give me the results I might struggle for. I definitely want to do the majority of this myself but sheet rock I hate 😁

The Zip liquid flashing is good to use for the nail heads. I am sure you have heard of the Build Show and Matt Risinger. That liquid flashing is also good for that bottom edge. After you put the OSB on liquid flash from the front to the bottom plate. Loved hearing you quote Weyerhaeuser! I work for them out of Brunswick GA. Great Company!

Andrew, I already commented about this a couple days ago & you said you did. I meant the OSB usually drops about about an inch below the seal plate, not even at the bottom of it, this way it would have covered the gap between the concrete & 2x6 seal, less chance of bugs or moisture getting under the seal 2x6.

speaking from experience, you can use a flush trim bit to get the final opening but using it to cut the opening will burn through the bit crazy fast. its best not to exceed half the width of the bit.

Let the sheathing begin!!! Great progress! You stole the thought right out of my mind about being concerned about the bottom edge of the OSB being exposed to rain water/hose/pressure washer. After you install the Tyvek are you planning on taping the bottom edge with another piece of Zip tape to the piece of tape you've already installed? Just seems like the bottom water proofing should be higher than the 2 inches or so of that initial piece of tape. :-)

The crazy thing about them to seal up a house is the more you seal it the worse the air inside gets due to building up contaminates over time. All the plastics and foams that off gas that now get trapped inside the structure along with natural sources like radon. The easy answer for what to do is a whole house air exchanger where it passes the intake air into a heat exchanger with the outgoing air to warm/cool the air depending on the season. 1-2 exchanges of air per day will keep the inside air quality good but you can go to the insane and go for 1-2 per hour if you have an allergy issue using a good filter on the intake air to keep the pollen or spores out depending on the source of the allergy. You also get the fun ones like gas/propane water heaters and furnaces where you need to bring in burn air from the outside in a very sealed up house to not be sending the conditioned air right up the chimney.

Here’s an idea. You don’t want to drive the tractor on the concrete. Make a big 3 1/2 x 6 1/2‘ table with good wheels on it. Weld it out of steel. Then you can put stuff on it with the tractor and wheel it farther in on the concrete without having to drive the tractor up there. Do it out of steel or use a lot of 45° anglesIf you do wood, then it will hold 1000 pounds or more easy and you can put a pretty good size stack of wood on there and then you’re stuck in with his mobile. It’s not really a waste because it something you can always use, especially if you do it out of steel it’ll be mobile come and make the bottom rack strong enough to move it with the tractor and you’ve got a great project table to use on other stuff in the future after the house is done. It would be nice if you had to weld or fix something on an implement or an ATV or motorcycle or something, you would have a table beefy enough to put it up there and work so you’re not on your knees and twisting your back out the whole time.

You can use a router to cut out the walls gaps
@TKCL

I do use one in the next episode but it burns bits up to do full cuts. I still prefer a rough cut with a saw and then router to finish.

You might want to cut off the tape from the outside. One- the inspector wont be able to see your work. Two- if it gets wet at least the tape will help moisture from getting inside.

Andrew didn't I hear you say you were going to have the house spray foam Insulated? If so having the rough side in like you have it will probably prove stronger adhesion than the slick side.

Would not be a bad idea to lay a another layer of tape over the rolled over end to prevent any water from entering the rolled over tape. Like a counter flashing. What you basically did was create a bath tub via the tape. And/or purposefully add weep holes at the bottom end so by chance if water does get under the tape, it can dry out or drain. This is why I prefer blue barrier by polywall.
@TKCL

Don't forget tyvek is over the osb and tape. Water would have to make it past the caulk, hardi board and tyvek to enter the tape. Highly unlikely.

Hardi siding, but no those are technically not sealed. The overlap will keep rain off if done correctly.

Awesome job on building the tools!!! My boyfriend welds some as well he doesn't have tanks like you do but he has a gas powered welder with generator that he enjoys playing with along with a couple of other welders some where hiding around the house.. Anyway how are you going to let the water drain out of the bottom of the OSB? So if it gets wet into the wood doesn't the bottom need to be open to drain the water out? Just curious anyway great job love the content! Keep up the good work and stay safe!!

The plan is to never allow water to get to the osb, that would ruin it. I'm going the extra mile on caulking and house wrap to protect it.

Make sure you let the plywood start below the slab height. About an inch below it. You can use roofing asphalt for the seam around the bottom and a lot cheaper than the tape and works very well. We use fast flash there and go 3 inches above and below the seam.

@diegoranchinc5389
@diegoranchinc5389 2 года назад
@@TKCL I agree and when I was a builder we hung OSB on the horizontal 80% of the time. I think most peoples concern is air flow and water intrusion because the horizontal allows more gaps. Where flooring and roof need more strength, walls do not. It might be a lot of over thinking but I believe it's what you prefer more. I live in AR with tornados and last year we had one come right over my house and touch down a half a mile from me that destroyed a big part of our town. I'm not sure vertical or horizontal would have made a difference. It destroyed homes, restaurants, banks, our air port and the mall to rubble.

I really do need the strength, pole barn houses flex and move because of the posts, you really rely on the sheeting to lock everything together and stop the flex/movement.
