On 03/06/2024 at approximately 0119 hours, while patrolling the area of 35th street and Burks Ave, I observed a white SUV fail to come to a complete stop at a stop sign in the area. I observed the vehicle slow and the rear lights illuminate but the vehicle never came to a complete stop. The glare of the street lights illuminated the vehicle well during the observation. The chrome wheels of the vehicle never halted movement, but only slowed. I started towards the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop for the infraction. Once I activated my patrol blue lights, the vehicle failed to stop and continued to drive. I advised NLR communication of the stop and the vehicles actions while activating my patrol siren. The white SUV (AR: AEN30Y) drove in the middle of the road, then accelerated. The vehicle drove south on Percy Machin, disregarding a traffic red light, with speeds reaching 103 mph. Once near the intersection of Percy Machin and Pike, I applied my brake and checked to make sure the roadway was clear to pass. The suspect vehicle turned onto 18th Street, eastbound with speeds reaching 85 mph. While on 18th Street the fleeing vehicle disregarded a red traffic signal and temporarily went airborne in a residential neighborhood.
While at the intersection of 18th and Main I applied my brakes and checked to see if the roadway was clear to pass. The speed on East 18th reached 85 mph with no other vehicle traffic. The fleeing failed to maintain control causing it to jump the curb into the grass, while attempting to make a left hand turn onto Cypress, which is a one-way road. The vehicle attempted to evade officers by driving the wrong way onto Cypress. It appeared to me that because of the reckless driving that the vehicle had wrecked off the roadway. I followed the vehicle in an attempt to be in the area if the vehicle became immobile or if the occupants escaped, however, the vehicle regained control and continued driving off the road turning onto East 19th. While at the intersection of E 19th and Cypress, I checked to see if the roadway was clear before continuing. Once on East 19th, the vehicle turned onto N Locust in the wrong direction. I did not follow the vehicle, but made an attempt to intercept the vehicle at another intersection. I was advised by other officers who had a view of the fleeing vehicle that it was last seen driving over the viaduct on Locust. I started towards the area where the vehicle was observed but lost visual contact. I terminated the pursuit once I arrived at 800 N Beech (Shorter Gardens Apartments).
While in the area, I intercepted the fleeing vehicle once more as I saw it turning onto East 8th street. I advised NLR communications of the suspect vehicle direction of travel once more. I activated my patrol blue lights and sirens and proceeded to pursue the fleeing vehicle. On East 8th speeds reached 43 mph with no other vehicle traffic. From East 8th the vehicle turned onto East 10th with speeds reaching 53 mph. Officer Gates responded and became secondary in the pursuit and took over calling the fleeing vehicle’s direction of travel (See Officer Gates Supplement for details). The vehicle turned onto SA Jones with speeds reaching 71 mph, and then onto Locust in the wrong direction. I did not follow the suspect vehicle while it drove the wrong way on the one-way road (Locust). I continued while being advised of the vehicles direction of travel by other officers. I later intercepted the vehicle once again eastbound on East Broadway. My speeds on East Broadway reached 104 mph with no other vehicle traffic. I observed Officer Edwards perform a TVI on the vehicle while at slow speeds. The TVI was successful in stopping the vehicle. Once stopped, I gave chase to the front seat passenger (Mr. Cromwell) who was later apprehended after a short foot chase. Mr. Cromwell was showed to have a probation revocation warrant out of PCSO for Terroristic Act.
The driver was apprehended by Officer Edwards (See Officer Edwards supplement for details). The backseat passenger Mr. Thomas remained in the vehicle but was apprehended on NLR Felony fleeing affidavit warrants. The Driver, Mr. Morris was showed to be in possession of two Glock switches and a handgun. One of the Glock switches was on the handgun he possessed. All evidence was given to Officer Edwards and OIT Hamilton who stored them into property at NLRPD headquarters. Mr. Morris also showed to be wanted on Federal charges. Mr. Morris was transported to Baptist Heath Springhill Hospital for treatment of his minor injuries. Mr. Morris was cited for Reckless Driving and Disobeying a stop sign (NO51856). All aforementioned occupants were transported to PCRDF on their listed charges. I was driving in unit 2212 and my MVR was active during the pursuit.
