This is a 1995 Porsche carrera, the first year in North America for the model 993. This car was sold from 1995 until 1998, and was replaced by a water-cooled 996. These cars have become rather collectable, going up dramatically in value in recent years due to the unique design, engine sound, build quality and lack of supply. This particular 1995 Porsche 993 has been upgraded with PSS10 suspension, turbo-twist wheels, it comes with soft-backed sports seats, motor sound package and Hi-Fi sound as well. The original radio is also available for this car. With 272hp in a car about the size of a current Boxster, makes for a lot of fun, able to make a run to 100km/h in 5.5 seconds. The Porsche 993 was the first 911 to come with a 6-speed manual transmission.
My thanks to Cor Motorcars for providing me this car. They always have some very cool cars and are based in Vancouver, BC.

At 2:27 the basket handle (third-brake light) was used on the "early" 1995 models. Later 1995 models like mine had the third-brake light at the top of the rear window just like the 1996+ models.

The 1995 does have an SAI, but it does not generate an engine check light when there is an issue with it as it does on a 1996 to 1998 models. People living were they have emission tests consider that a problem.

I have a 1996 black 993 and I agree with you, they are a more involved drive than later 911's even though the newer cars do everything better and are much faster. My experience is my varioram spools up and revs much better than a friend's non-varioram 993, which seems to run out of breath by comparison at high revs.

Like an old 90s Mercedes 300E, these old 911 were built like tanks, unlike today unfortunately. Another thing about buying these old 911 Porsches is the IMS bearing that wears out, its a small fortune to fix.

Zack - I note Singer (reimagined 911s ) uses the 964 model (1990-94). What differences are there between 993 and 964?
@vetterka
@vetterka 4 года назад
Mainly the suspension of the 993 is much more advanced. It handles not so rough than a 964, however 993 is faster. The 964 has a lower mileage for regular maintenance. 4 wheel drive system of the versions is very different: 964 is said to be „boring“, it is adapted from the 959. 993 awd is more lively. Singer uses 964 for two reasons: suspension can be used for their high power but you can easily get that old school 911 look because a lot of body parts still fit from G-Model to a 964.
@Motormouth...
@Motormouth... 4 года назад
As already noted from the other comment, the proportions and size of the car is better for what they're trying to accomplish. The main differences are the suspension and all-wheel drive system. The all wheel drive system in the 993 is much lighter than the first version used in the 964. Some of the parts used on the 993 are actually from the older car, some of the interior pieces
@maxagent86
@maxagent86 3 года назад
Actually, the 4WD system of the 964 is technologically superior to that of the 993. The 964 system allows for 0-100% bias on demand (61% rear and 39% front in normal driving), whereas that range is much more limited on the 993. The 964 system is based on that of the 959, which was too expensive to also adopt on the 993, which was built during a time of financial hardship for Porsche. Indeed, the original intent - and design - of the 993 was for it to be the first water-cooled 991, but money was unexpectedly short and it ended up being an air-cooled stopgap to the 996. Besides being the last generation with the classic design and first generation with a center tunnel on the monocoque, which confers more rigidity to the chassis (both main reasons), the 964 was built with thicker gauge steel than any other air-cooled 911, which is yet another reason for Singer to favor it. The 993 handles better than the 964 because of its multilink rear suspension and is, of course, a great air-cooled car, but the 964 is by no means boring or inferior to it. In fact, prices for the 964 have been higher than for the 993 for some time now.

Hi Zack, thank you for this insightful review on the pinnacle model of the 911 series! Would you consider doing a comparable video on the original NSX (1991-2005)?
@maxagent86
@maxagent86 4 года назад
Nice that you did this video, but you gave a few wrong pieces of information. 1995 is actually the second year of the 993. It is only the first year in North America. The asymmetrically placed rear view mirrors are not exclusive of the 993 generation of 911's. SAI stands for secondary air injection (not intake) ports. 1995 cars do have SAI and they also do get clogged, but when that happens it does not trip a check engine light in that year only, because it is pre-OBD II. Actually, this is yet another advantage of that year, in that it is not necessary to pass emissions, which is not always easy with air cooled engines.

Nice review - a couple of minor comments, The 1995 has exactly the same SAI (Secondary Air Injection not Intake) issues, but the older OBD1 ECU does not report it, so perhaps the 96-98 cars do have have a tendency to throw a CEL if that happens. It does not happen that often, and it's only an issue if your local emissions authority checks. The corresponding downside is the 1995's often struggle with stalling if you install the lighter RS flywheel, which is a common and great upgrade because they are significantly lighter than the stock dual-mass flywheel, which allows the engine to rev much quicker. The 1995's also have less HP but more importantly less torque than the varioram cars. Not sure where you got the 95' revs better, no evidence of that and I have driven dozens of 993's. The slightly offset pedals and floor mounted pivots perhaps will throw off a novice but it's a non-issue - but using the cruise control to solve that? Given you shot this in BC, the one big advantage the 95 has for this year only is you can get collector plates and reduce your insurance to 1/3 of what it was before. Over the next few years all the 993's will become eligible, (BTW I have owned 993's for over 15 years and currently drive a 97 993TT). Values peaked a few years ago, dropped while the 964 climbed to its current silly heights, but it appears the 993's are slowly rising again. Hard to lose capital on these cars!

At 9:28 "you want to find a car that has been sorted by somebody that knows what they are doing". That is a tough one if you are unfamiliar with the make and model and to be a true Porsche enthusiast, that takes time. Going online to sites like Rennlist, well what can I say, I have been on it for over a decade and there are a lot of people there that know very little to nothing. Yes, even some of those that have high post counts and even some of the advice I received from shops that was dead wrong. Then there are a "very few" that do know a lot and determining that means you have to know something yourself. Reading some of the comments (and these are a few) is better than going to the local comedy club. 911excellence.blogspot.com/

@maxagent86
@maxagent86 4 года назад
"1995 not a collectors item". Yeah, sure... the price they command these days is just for reasons other than collectibility, I suppose (?) That year is actually deliberately sought after by many. It doesn't require passing emissions (it's the last year that allows for that), which is not exactly trivial with air cooled cars. It doesn't trip a CEL from clogged SAI ports. And most of them don't have that pesky immobilizer. Finally, a maladjusted Vario ram is worse than not having one, and it doesn't take much to get them out of sync.
