Project 250R Cleaning up The Cases and Removing Stubborn Gasket Material
#motor #engine #rebuild
Hey guys, I made this video almost 2 years ago and I still want to stress how important it is to be extra gentle if you use this method. I use a different attachment now, a bristle disc ( amzn.to/3I5QG7h ) It is also necessary to surface any case half or cover after doing this; this is really just for getting the big stuff off.
Tools are listed below!
Die Grinder in the video - amzn.to/2U7rWnV
Milwaukee Die Grinder - amzn.to/3aHxr2Z
3M Bristle Pads (Safer than Cookie Wheel but take slightly longer) - amzn.to/3I5QG7h

3M cleaning wheel for Buffer - amzn.to/39Xp6sh
Razors - amzn.to/2IEPlY8

This method does work but it is very risky, especially on surfaces that need to be perfectly machined like a cylinder head. If you use this method and them surface that part at a machine shop, you would be amazed how wavy it is after using one of these wheels. On tough gaskets I use a razor blade to get the gasket off and then scuff the surface with a red scotch brite pad by hand soaked with some brake clean. Or if it needs to be perfectly flat I will scrape it clean and then get a piece of glass and lay out some 400-600 grit sand paper and run the part over the sand paper in a figure 8 pattern. These wheels can remove material super fast especially on soft parts like aluminum,pot metal, brass, etc..

Had some of these pads lying around from a kit I bought for some autobody work a while ago, was cleaning some gasket material off a polaris motor and the gaskets were crazy stubborn!! Razor blade was doing pretty much nothing, I was getting pissed... Grabbed one of these bad boys and put it in the die grinder and oh wow! The finish!! I just hope that it didn't mess up the surface too bad. Trying to watch videos to see if I messed up too bad by doing this. lol

What I use to get that old glue adhesive off is acetone. Soak a little bit on a towl and rub into the gasket material. Once dry use the same razer and the gasket adhesive comes right off. Give it a try.

I do this all the time on old triumph motorcycles followed by a quick surfacing on a piece of countertop. Maybe there ARE micro imperfections, but that's what a gasket is for. Never ever had a leak. Gasket + Hylomar M

It's frustrating watching this because I had these tools sitting next to me on my bench when I changed the clutch on an '02 Yamaha Warrior 350 I just picked up. It took me almost three hours with a razor blade and gasket remover. It was my first time doing it, and I was concerned about not scoring the clutch cover. It was definitely the original gasket and clutch.

Wrong tool for that job 3m makes a green plastic cup with plastic fingers on it that goes on your little angle grinder for cleaning gaskets of aluminum! The scotch bright are good on steel but can make gasket matting surfaces wavy and lead to leaks on aluminium. But a trick to flatten out gasket surfaces get peace of glass spray with water stick sheet of 400 grit sand paper on spray with water and work cases in a figure 8 pattern
@MichaelSabo
@MichaelSabo 4 года назад
Yes, not sure if you watched the entire video, but I mention surfacing the cases/covers in this video and stress using extreme care with these cookie wheels. Great info though; the 3M bristle pads are great too they just take longer, at least in my experience; I should have included that.

I looked up this video because ive replaced a few stators where the gasket material is stuck on the inside part that is still attached to the bike. If anyone have a good tip on how to do this in places where a rolloc wheel or die grinder litteraly wont fit or will do damage, please let me know. Ive tried looking up similar attachments for rotary tools, but havent found any good ones so might have to make it myself.

Those all look like aluminum parts. Infact I think the stator cover has to be aluminum as to be not magnetic. You should definitely not use steel wool on an aluminum part. That’s a no no

@snowminkankles1401

Tim Benham steel is a harder metal than aluminum so cleaning aluminum with steel can remove the aluminum and not just the material. If you change the head gasket on your car a lot of cars have a cast iron block and an aluminum head and if you use the same stuff to clean the aluminum as you do the steel you’ll gouge the metal and not get a seal on the gasket
@likkitongue
@likkitongue 3 года назад
Bad idea using those pads They are more abrasive than they appear and will remove aluminum fast. It may not seem like it when you look at it but I can guarantee those surfaces are not perfectly flat anymore. Also those bearing you left in the case now have a nice abrasive dust coating.
