I'm floored by this and the numbers. We have under 20K to live off, and we are saving money in the bank - and we are not suffering in our everyday life. With an income of 200K, we would consider ourselves to be rolling in money, so why can't they manage? And why on earth are they living in a house worth 800K? A modestly sized house would be enough.
@getinthespace7715
@getinthespace7715 3 месяца назад
@@robr268, if they are spending $4k a month on their house and probably another $1500-2k/month on cars. Plus a home equity line of credit, plus who knows what sort of other insane expenses. They don't seem to be "in control" of their spending. I'm in a situation where we have been funding my wife's nurse practitioner degree and are in the process of moving out of state. I'm renting a house in one place and a townhouse in another on $150k income. While paying for all this nursing school debt we took on over the last 6 months and everything else in our life. Once my wife starts working this month we will have a combined income over $300k and our living expenses will drop to $1500/month. We'll wipe out all our debt in the first 6 months and we'll be able to bank money fast. We started out 15 years ago on my single income of $36k a year. We understand the value of money and hard work. I would never sign myself up for an $800k mortgage. It's not worth it. I spend over $1500/month on Housing and it feels stupid.
@getinthespace7715
@getinthespace7715 3 месяца назад
@@ingridburling8731, it sounds like complete lunacy. When my wife and I started out 15 years ago we were living on my $36k a year gross income. We've kept that same scarcity mentality which has allowed us to save $250k in retirement. My high-school janitor and his wife who worked at the grocery store bakery retired multi-millionaires when I was in high school. He gave me great advice when I was a kid. I took it to heart. Avoid debt and invest like crazy. Some people don't get it. My wife just graduated with her Nurse Practitioner degree. Our income is skyrocketing this year. Our goal is to be the first in our family to create generational wealth. Setup college funds for our daughter and all our nieces and nephews.

The car payments on a 200k income aren’t horrible. $850k mortgage on a 200k income ON TOP of the cars is the problem. $400-500k in a house would make way more sense for their income if they want to keep the cars. We love to pick on car payments nowadays (and don’t get me wrong - it has gotten ridiculous with some of these payments my) but we never talk about being house poor. We make $140k in the Midwest and I was on the fence for a long time about spending $300k on our house because I thought it was a lot to take on for our income. I can’t even imagine a mortgage on an $850k house.. good lord.

So why would you sell your biggest asset to pay off debt? If the house is worth 800k and goes up a measly 2% a year, that is almost of 50k in 3 years of appreciation. I know you dont see it until you sell but if you sell and rent, you’ll spend 30-40k a year in rental income and have no tax benefits, and the only equity payments you’ll be making will be will be for your landlord each time you pay your rent and he/she pays their mortgage. This is poor man’s logic.
