I understand that some people have difficulties when it comes to divorce, but it can't hurt to actually look up what the laws are BEFORE taking your ex to court. On a side note, my parents got divorced after 17 years of marriage and the only bit that saw the inside of a court were the applications that had to be sent there. They sold the (mortgage-free) house and bought a house each with the proceeds (it was a big house they got when house prices were affordable). They were able to buy a family house each (mortgage-free) and worked out between them how everything would be split. They sent each other birthday and Christmas cards until a few years ago. If every divorce went the way my parents' did (ie amicably) then the world would be a much better place. They've both since remarried. My dad has been married for 23 years and my mum 17. Neither of them have had a bad word to say about each other, or their new spouses, in the last 25 years.

I remember one story where the guy talked to a lawyer first and found out that since he was in a no-fault divorce state, even though his wife cheated and was unemployed, she'd get half of everything. So he basically played dumb and flipped the script. He encouraged her to advance her career and become a nurse, which she did. He then volunteered to be a stay-at-home dad to support her career, all while she banged the doctor she worked for. Then once all the dominos were set, he left several searches of things like "how to survive your wife's infidelity" in the family computer's browser history and let the kids take care of the rest. They absolutley loved their father since he was always around, and barely knew their mother since she was at work. So naturally they were furious with their mom and wanted to live with dad. Since he was the primary caregiver he kept the house, and she had to pay him a boatload in alimony. And the funny part is the stress of the divorce made her "less fun" and her doctor dumped her too.

That last story made me remember a co-worker Karen that thought she was hot fuzz when it came to doing jobs that needed to be done. Back when I was working at a sit-down fast food seafood restaurant, I was busy cleaning trays one day, during a lull in customers coming in, ((read: My job was a basic gopher job --"Go clean the tables", "take out the garbage", "Wash the tables", that sort of thing)) and I was cleaning off trays. "OP!" She says to me, as I balk and glance at her. "...there you are! I need you to go clean the bathrooms!". At this point, my brain was going "...but, I'm *ALREADY* doing something...", but I didn't say anything. She must have seen my look, because she snapped at me again. "I *SAID* go clean the bathrooms!". I then looked at her again, as she stalked over to me. "Did {boss} tell you to clean the bathrooms?" I asked, as she huffed. "No! *I* told you to do it!" She snaps back, as she literally pulls me away from what I'm doing, goes over to the small closet where the supplies are, pulls out all the supplies and thrusts them into my arms. She then literally drags me to the bathrooms, and opens the door. She then goes over the instructions and looks me dead in the eyes and says "...AND I want the celing scrubbed, too!" ((no, I'm NOT kidding. Keep that in mind.)). Cue my sly MC. So, here I am, scrubbing on my literal hands and knees in the bathrooms for what feels like hours ((while awkwardly apologising to customers as I move out of the bathroom to let them use it)), when guess who come hauling back to the bathrooms. Yup, Ms. "scrub EVERYTHING in the bathroom" herself. "OP!" She says, as I glance up from scrubbing the floor, as she puts her hands on her hips and takes an annoyed stance. "...where the heck have you been?! The trays need to be washed and you need to help give out orders to the customers!" At this point, I'm mentally smirking wickedly, as I glance up from the floor, wipe the sweat from my brows, and say in the most sickly sweet voice I can muster up: "I'm sorry, Karen. I was just SO busy back here trying to get everything clean! You know, LIKE YOU TOLD ME TO DO...". You can see the wheels in her head turning, as she puts two and two together, as she snaps with "Just...just go clean the trays and hand out the orders! I'll get someone else to clean!". I may have ticked her off more that day, but after that, she left me alone...

My dad asked my brothers to help me out while I was gone. Apparently, my older brother(OB) who had laundry before me, DIDN'T DO HIS JOB. So I had to catch up the laundry. But again, I was out for most of the day. I didn't get everything caught up, but did as much as I could. Then, this morning, my mom said "Oh there's no WAY she's passing laundry. She failed, YB(younger brother) you can have kitchen today since OP didn't do her job." But my OB didn't do his part, and got no flack for it! My mom keeps glaring at me, and telling me to do my job right, or I'll have it for a week. AITA?

I've been through it but I got nowhere. I found work as an apprentice in the electrical field when jobs were scarce and this is a great career, $10 an hour for the first 6 months so I showed the judge that I was actually giving 53% of my salary for child support when Nevada law was 18%. This idiot judge ordered me to quit and get a better job immediately to keep paying the triple amount! I had to leave that jurisdiction. Then I get paperwork from the D.A. family support saying I'm $8,000+ behind which I said was crazy wrong! In court I pulled the receipts and cancelled checks (could have brought more but much of my stuff was in another state but I showed she was lying as I had over $5,000 in proof, that's felony level attempted theft. She even said "that's my ID and signature but I don't remember getting those so HE SHOULD HAVE TO PAY ME AGAIN! WTF? She got no punishment and I had to pay the difference, about $3,000 which I kept paying extra each month. I then got more paperwork that says I owe $18,000 + so I showed the D.A. she was asking for the same months! They acted surprised and said they will expose this on the 15th (next court). You can guess what happened... maybe. I got a letter on the 14th saying I missed court and they are working with her to correct the amount but they didn't even retype the paperwork, just drew a line through the 15th, wrote 12th next to it and said I was not in court!

Hehehe. The first story brings back warm memories of my brother's divorce. My Karen of an ex-SIL made the process so entertaining. She switched attorneys after the first one didn't tell her what she wanted to hear. The second behaved almost like Eric Cartman. The legal documents that my brother's attorney would pass on had Post-it Notes with humorous and snide comments like "Some more Entertainment" on them. They read one to me while I was out of town in Chicago and I ended up rolling on the ground in the middle of the street laughing hysterically (I was drunk). Ultimately my ex-SIL screwed herself over as well. My brother just had to pay his legal fees which the attorney discounted because of all the ass-hattery my ex-SIL pulled. She ended up paying about 6 times that amount.

In Arizona, which is an at will state, employers can dismiss you for any reason (except for protected classes) or no reason at all. well, there are a few scenarios off the top of my head for how that happened. most of them are based on maybe they just weren't together that long, like they got married within a year of meeting each other. hiding your true self for such a short amount of time is not that hard if you know that you'll get a big reward at the end of it. or maybe she got worse as time went on. how long was their marriage anyway? i don't think it was said, some people get really mean as they get older or their personalities change. did OP say why he wanted a divorce, maybe the wife was a good person but became mean because of the divorce, the post did say she doesn't want to divorce OP. anyway, there are lots of reasons why they'd get married only for her to turn out this mean.

I was in the process of a divorce. My ex believed our house was going to be foreclosed on (we were a month behind on the mortgage at that point) so in the pre divorce paperwork gave me all the rights to the house. Fine by me. She lived with her mommy at this point, in fact she still does to this day, so I changed all the locks and garage door code. I came home from work one day and my door was broken in and one of my cars was missing. I called the police before going into the house. When we went in the only things that were missing were my very extensive sports card collection the car keys and some gold coins. Nothing was ransacked so I immediately knew it was her. Turns out her and her brother had broken in so the police went to their house. They immediately admitted to it and I could do nothing since her name was on the house, even though I had documents stating she gave up the rights to it. There were a few cards in the collection worth hundreds and one worth over a thousand. According to the police, they were her cards too so I couldn't file a criminal charge against her, only a civil one.

I'm amazed at the number of people on both sides of the support coin (spouse or child) that get greedy and demand a hearing to get their fair share... and then get upset and want to appeal because the other person had been being reasonable. My exhusband had a brief 6 month stint with the FOC after he refused my negotiation for child support. He was convinced I was trying to screw him over- that was fun for my petty side because I'd had my lawyer calculate the support recommendation from the FOC's own guidelines and support recommendations. Some how though they still wanted him to pay more then I'd offered and even when he went offseason for his seasonal job was still taking the full child support amount. I did wait until he asked in the nicest way to suggest we go back to paying support between us and remove the FOC (you have to file paperwork for this to happen) mostly after that he did pay his child support and when his funds were short I worked with him because you know "kid's father".

I was served with the paperwork for a divorce after 30 years of marriage. A little while later, I get a :draft” separation agreement. Just about the only thing in that draft was “Husband has stock options from his employer. Wife agrees that these will probably never have value and therefore she agrees that she will get none of the stock options.” The company had not yet gone public on the Stock Exchange. He had been given the options as part of a signing bonus and then in later years they added stock options in lieu of cash. The company had been on the verge of an IPO for quite a while. Of course this is absolutely insulting. Sure they may never be worth anything but that was unlikely. A few days or a week later I found articles in 2 different business journals with an interview of the CEO. In the interviews the CEO stated that they planned to go public by the next fall (about a year). We ended up going to mediation to divide property and settle alimony. My lawyer said I would do better in mediation than letting a judge decide. It should be noted I am disabled and unable to work. I had been for years. Well,most of mediation was spent on those stock options (they would be worth a lot). He put the options down in the paperwork as “deferred compensation.” Nothing more, no details. At the mediation, he said that they had change the plan and he was getting a lower number of options but refused to give me any of the paperwork on it. Well we spent about 3 hours arguing over it until he capitulated. He finally figured out we wouldnt proceed in the process until the stock options were settled. No discussion of dividing up property or alimony until the options were settled. Well the lawyers finally came up with a number of options I would receive for each of the 5 vesting years. Eventually we moved on. He offered me a very tiny alimony. I got double that. So time moves on and the company finally goes public but they made additional changes to the plan. He couldnt exercise the options for 1 year. The options are in his name and cannot be transferred to me so he has to exercise the shares allocated to me and then transfer the remaining shares or any money to me. This will result in him having to pay additional taxes so there are details listed if the amount of taxes they take out when the shares are exercised is not enough. He has to have his taxes done 2 ways: with my shares exercise and without my shares exercised. If they didnt take out enough then I pay him the difference. So first we have to exercise the options. He gave me all kinds of trouble about doing it and when it was finally done, he refused to give me any of the paperwork so I didnt even know how many shares had been sold for taxes. The only thing I knew was the number of shares he had transferred to me. We it comes time to do 2022 taxes and he sends me an email stating I owe him $4700 for the taxes. I ask for the original brokerage statement and he refuses for a while but eventually gives it to me. As far as “proving” $4700 was the right amount he just sent me a spreadsheet with the amounts the shares were sold for and from that it calculates the taxes by multiplying his figures by the tax rate. This was not an actual tax return. It was just a spreadsheet he said was done by the account. It wasnt. The numbers were all wrong and the amount it said I paid in taxes was different than the amount actually taken out. An accountant wouldnt make that mistake. My ex did the spreadsheet. He doesnt know how taxes are calculated because in the 30 years we were married he never once did the taxes. I did. So I reminded him of the procedure set out in the court order for handling a disagreement on the amount of taxes owed. He categorically refused to do it. He wasnt going to let me see his taxes. So I ignored him. I had no obligation to pay a penny without the tax returns. Well while I was looking at the brockerage statement I noticed something. I had requested he use the “sell to cover” option which means they sell just enough shares to buy the rest and pay taxes. This way you get the most shares you can without having to lay out any money. At the time the shares were transferred to me I vaguely remember thinking that the number was too low but I was overwhelmed with stuff and hadnt gone back to figure it out. Well the number of shares was too low. Instead of “sell to cover” he did “sell to cover + $100K” He had them sell my shares and give HIM $100K in cash. Plus taxes had to be paid on the shares sold so they sold even more shares to pay the taxes. So he had $100K in his bank tax free ( I had paid those taxes). That’s theft by conversion. He converted my shares to cash and kept the cash. It’s also a violation of the court order which lays out very clearly how the exercising of my shares was to be handled. He wouldnt even allow me to sell them all and take the cash. So I sat down and figured out the total he had stolen. $100K shares for the cash and $49K for the shares sold to pay the taxes on the $100K. Plus I eventually sold the shares that had been transferred to me and made a profit. I calculated how much profit I lost of the extra shares he sold so he could keep the cash. It was about $25K. He owes me about $175K. Well the final lump of options became available this winter and he first threatened not to exercise them which would have violated court order but he did eventually exercise my shares but he kept 150 shares that belonged to me, Absolutely refused to transfer all the shares. We argued about it and he said “you are lucky to get anything. These are my shares from my hard work.” Right, while he was off traveling 3 out of 4 weeks I was home with 2 kids doing all the necessary things. In my state its all marital income doesnt matter who it came from and that is divided in a divorce. So my lawyer got to work on producing a “Motion to show cause and Contempt. He will have to appear before the judge in person and will have to pay me back about $200K plus my attorneys fees. He was served a few days ago. But just before we got the motion filed he sent me a letter thru my lawyer threatening me with Contempt for not paying the taxes. I was not in contempt. He was, by refusing to do the proper tax returns. My lawyer added that to the Motion for Contempt. Idiot thought he could bully me. He is in for a surprise. BTW, I’m fairly sure that he divorced me because he found out the company was going IPO and he thought if we divorced he wouldnt have to share the profits.

Narcissistic people in divorces always project what they would do in your shoes and fights a fight that wasn't even there to begin with. This fight ends up with them in even more debt than they were to begin with, paying lawyer fees and even more, and potentially dragging every single person they can in with them. It's the most tiring thing to watch and be dragged into, as the oldest child in a family with two parents going through divorce (my father is the one dragging it out for so long). My heart goes out to people also struggling with stubborn divorces, both the divorcees and the children dragged into it.

I recently saw a story from a Reditor called Bnnuy-Dad44 that went absolutely scorched earth on his insane wife during the divorce. I mean he seemed to plan for everything. Including having cameras everywhere in the house and living in an at fault state. So his wife lost a LOT in the divorce and even got arrested once for attempting to frame her husband

This is why I refuse to get married, and remain single. I had an unsavory experience with an ex fiance years ago. Long story short she lied to county officials that I physically abused her, when in fact all I did was call off the engagement and left her. I ended up taking a plea deal cause I done dealing with her nonsense. I ended up having to serve probation for 18 months, and had to take an anger resolution class which costed me thousands. (Not including the monthly probation fee) As far as I'm concerned she can stay far tf away from me, and never speak to me ever again.

I have never understood the idea of "spousal support" when it comes to divorces. You're an adult, your spouse is an adult. You're supposed to be able to take care of your self. Your ex should have no obligation to keep feeding you after you are no longer together. Splitting assets makes perfect sense, but that should be it. In my country this is the way it goes. You divorce, you split what you own minus debts and that's it.

Divorces in the US are truly ugly.. By Swedish laws, if you’re divorcing then you only split everything you’ve bought together while living together and then one of the partners pay the the one moving out half of the home value. No claims to earning, no financial support etc from one partner to another. Both partners are expected to take care of themselves afterwards.

These divorce stories are insane to me as a Danish person. A woman is not entitled to anything but half of both of your assets and after that, nothing. No alimony, it doesn't exist here. If she's not working, she'd better start to then. If there are kids in the picture the woman only gets child support if she is the primary caregiver ie. they live with her and not the father. If it's split custody, forget about it.

I grew up working in village in restaurants as my mom was a kitchen manager when I was young until I was married at 19. Anyway I was a server also at one point, after the utah clean indoor air act when into place. Our store was open 24/7 and near a well know country dance bar. I usually worked the 4pm to 4am shift and usually mailed a couple hundred a night (more than I make now at 43 yrs old), but i digress. I ALWAYS heard from the other servers about how much I made. But I knew the people from the bar and was always requested because they knew my mom at one of the other stores and so I grew upnwith a lot of them and now their families going to this bar. I even met my baby daddy/ex hubby there. When you're good at what you do, you make the money. The other servers were always so into the flirting with folks rather than working.

For story 1- I don’t understand why one person needs to pay another anything ongoing, after a divorce. (Other than child support, that one’s obvious) Like, women can get jobs, why is the man responsible for his ex? They’re not a family anymore and he owes her nothing. Alimony sounds like the most absurd thing. Many ages ago, when women weren’t allowed to have jobs, sure…it kinda sorta makes sense (even then, why is someone that’s no longer family your duty???) but these days, women can make as much money as they want. Divorce should mean both people go their separate ways and move on as adults, both covering their own finances
@Arob4343
@Arob4343 Год назад
Why the heck does he need to pay HER car payment?
@Sindalis1
@Sindalis1 Год назад
@@Arob4343 There are many (legitimate) reasons why people co-sign loans. Co-signing increases available income, allows you to apply your co-signer's credit so you may end up getting a much better interest rate, and even may allow you to qualify for the loan to begin with. His name was on the loan. A bank does not care if you get divorced. the name that is on the loan are the people responsible as they signed the legal contract. This is the same for a house or any other legal contract. You're relationship is irrelevant, the fact you signed on the line makes you liable. in story 1, if he did not pay the loan it would go unpaid. Since that is on his name as well his credit report would show all these unpaid payments and the effect of that would be to drastically reduce his credit score and have to take ALL the consequences that comes with having a low credit score; higher interest rates, unable to get financing, being rejected from renting apartments or even being turned down for a job being just a few possible consequences of having his score drastically lowered. So to prevent this he paid the loan. It is possible to have a court order demand piece of joint property either be refinanced or sold. In fact that is what it means when someone 'gets the house' in the divorce, the person taking the property is obligated by the court to refinance it in their own name only or to sell the property and split the proceeds... oh, and in the case of an asset any equity of that property should be split 50/50 between the parties. (in a no-fault situation) The other part to mention with him is that they are separated, not divorced. The law is different here; when the divorce goes through all assets like cars and houses will have to come to the table and be divided up among the parties (assuming a no-fault divorce that means a 50-50 split.) so at that point she could be ordered by the court to refinance the vehicle in her name only, and if she cannot then she must sell the vehicle and split the proceeds with him in an equitable distribution as determined by the court.
