r/Maliciouscompliance In today's episode, OP has an obnoxious who likes to control people just because he can control people. He rides OP about the office dress code, so OP is happy to maliciously comply by exploiting a loophole in the company dress code that allows him to proudly display his thick chest hair. Careful what you wish for, boss!

The dress code story reminded me of my grandpa. During WWII he was an airplane mechanic on an airforce base in south England. The airforce had a strict dress code where everyone had to wear a collar and tie every day. None of the mechanics paid attention to this rule because, obviously, having loose clothing (like a tie) around machinery is very dangerous. One of the officers flipped out at the mechanics for breaking dress code one afternoon and demanded that the next day EVERYONE would have to wear a collar and tie or he'd have them dishonorably discharged. My grandpa, being a somewhat rebellious man, decided to comply. They wanted him to wear a collar and tie? Fine. He told some of his buddies what he was planning to do, and they all thought it was hilarious and agreed to join in. So the next morning the mechanics reported to their hangar wearing collars and ties. ONLY collars and ties. They got in a bunch of trouble, but they had, technically, followed their orders, so no one was discharged.

OP's manager from the second story about clock watchers makes me think of a "supervisor" I worked with at a home improvement retailer who balked at my unavailability during certain days because of college courses. She said "You need to get your priorities straight. Kids today have no job loyalty!" "Priorities? My priority is to NOT have to work in retail for the rest of my life. And why should I show loyalty to a corporation who has made it abundantly clear that they consider me expendable and act like it's a privilege to work for them instead of treating me like an actual human being? Well, I had a work that was perfectly fine to do home, since it was basically an AutoCAD drawing job. The funny thing is that my personal computer was faster than the ones the company had, and if I was in home office, in fact, I could had done it faster than going in there to do the same thing!!! I feel the OP on the story that got docked half their day's pay should've checked with a labour lawyer, because I may be wrong, but I feel what that manager did was MASSIVELY illegal
@amberkat8147
@amberkat8147 2 года назад
It would be in the U.S. Forcing people to work off the clock is called wage theft. You can't dock pay for hours worked either. A lawyer would have had a field day with them. And that company who bought out the other company and didn't renegotiate the contracts of the workers they'd acquired but "didn't pay commission"- I'm pretty sure that was illegal too. And extremely unethical- they just bought it to eliminate the competition in that field and have the new employees teach their people how it worked so they could then fire them without paying them all of what they'd earned. Companies today cannot be trusted as far as the buildings they're in can be thrown and must be watched like hawks.

Back in middle school they brought in these stupid uniforms, with stricter rules for the girls, including requiring "sensible underwear". And me being the smart ass I am noticed that the rules were pretty strict, but never said a boy couldn't wear the girls uniform. So I asked mom to get me the girls uniform, sensible bra included, which she thought was as funny as I did, and got it. I somewhat disagree, but with an annotation that you need to be smart about it. If a company tries pulling sh*t with you, drop them like a sack of bricks. You miss one pay cheque for me, or are late, or skim on the amount that we officially agreed on, we're going to have a problem right away. Coming in early to do extra work off the clock, or working through your unpaid lunches, and the like can show initiative and benefit you under the right employer. I've had no shortage of raises in most places I've worked, and others I dropped. One guy tried to not pay me once, but changed his mind within a few hours. Now, it's not necessary to work outside of your hours, but then if our pay cheques are different, and I get the promotion, then you can't complain. Those who act get the rewards.

Dress code story. So I was the main programmer for a small website shop. As I didn't deal with the clients (designers did that) but just made whatever the client and designers came up with work, I was given an office in the back and was allowed to wear whatever I wanted - normally t-shirt and sweats/shorts. Boss hired an office manager (OM) to keep jobs on track so he could focus on other things, and he complained about my sloppy attire. Boss asked me if I would mind doing business casual. I verified with both of them that khaki-style pants and polo or button down shirts fit the definition. Yes. Asked for one more week in my normal attire because I didn't have time to go shopping. Granted. Actually that was just to wait for my new wardrobe to arrive. Monday of my being a team player, I was the last one into the meeting room for our start of the week meeting. Got a lot of compliments on my bright orange Hawaiian shirt. OM seethed. Boss just laughed - knowingly. Next day, bright red Hawaiian shirt. Wednesday, black with chili peppers. Thursday, light blue ocean waves with ukuleles. Friday, classic cars. I wore those the rest of the time I worked there, outlasting the OM. Still have them twenty years later. They're in great shape. I say the boss laughed knowingly because there was one incident where I wore a shirt with a chili pepper on it that said, "Bite Me." Boss asked me not to wear that shirt again as it was just a bit much. I said okay. Tuesday, I wore a shirt with a mosquito on it (a gift from someone who went to Wisconsin where the mosquito is their state bird). "What did I ask you yesterday?" "Not to wear the shirt I had on. This is a different one." (silently staring, gears turning) "How many Bite Me t-shirts do you have." "Five. All gifts if you can believe it." "Fine. Get it out of your system this week then no more." "Thanks, boss."

Current job; My boss gives us "flexible" hours, just be there the amount of time you are contracted for. While not offering overtime. Also my boss; "No you can't leave early even if you didn't use your lunch time". (we pay our own lunch). "I expect you to be done with this today"... leaving a good hour or two's amount of work, when there is 30 min left on the clock... Many other examples could follow. Then my boss, when I am the co workers, I am put to train (whom I have since been drilling to watch their clock in time, so they don't cheat themselves) starts leaving on the dot. "Guys, production is slipping, we need to catch up, can't you work a little extra?".... Nope, we can't, we are off. Meetings is scheduled with the boss, and the owner (small business), I have been documenting when I go in, and when I leave, for the past 18 months. And while I have not calculated the exact amount of hours, I know I am at least in the "green" timewise with 70h+. Gonna be interesting how that turns out.

Had something similar, worked many hours unpaid overtime, wanted to leave early one friday to help a family member, was told no comp time, and if i left before 2pm i'd be docked half a days pay. So i worked until 2pm, and left, only to be told on the monday I was gaming the system and taking advantage of them. needless to say, I had a new job soon after.

I agree, but starting a company is a lot of work, effort and pressure. Idk if anyone could just handle the position as the big boss, no matter how tempting it is.

Not everyone is cut out to be the boss of a company, unless you’re suggesting that the OP subcontract out as consultants and contractors it was hard to justify in the OP’s mind doing that job as the boss as there’s more to owning a company than just special skills

If stupid dress code rules are what managers think about and focus on, its a wonder any real work gets done. Where do these people come from? Why does anyone let them out into the light? And is this what's taught in business courses in colleges and universities? I fear for the future of the human race.

Clock watcher: I heard that some time HR payroll actually deducted salary from overtime and such into their pockets. I don’t believe that until my OT is exactly the same as my team leader but she got lesser than me which impossible because her base salary is higher than me, we confront and it a whole mess.

Easy to say what someone "should" do when you do not know them and have zero context. Plus, just because you went the self-employed route doesn't make it for everyone. Considering, OP and you would be entirely different self-employed types and in different industries. It's not as easy as you would make it seem. Most self-owned businesses fail to survive a decade.
