The 'awkward' conversation Gandalf had with Bilbo at his front door was largely straight from the book, which was written for children. That's why there was some amusing word play about 'Good Mornings' to appeal to kids.

The main reason the Hobbit movies are not as great as the Lord Of The Rings trilogy is because Peter Jackson simply did not have the amount of preparation time for the Hobbit that he had for LOTR. But even so, I still absolutely LOVE these films. There are certain plot details I wish weren't there, but I still feel like they really stay true to the original spirit of Professor Tolkien's works.

I agree. Fellowship was released in 2001. But the series was pitched in 1995, and began production in 1997, with all 3 being filmed from 1999 to 2000. The Hobbit on the other hand suffered from a whole bunch of legal issues going on at the time. With Peter Jackson opening a lawsuit against New Line, New Line said they would never work with Jackson again, MGM halted development because they wanted Jackson involved, then the Tolkien estate filed a suit against New Line. Guillermo del Toro was working with Jackson to write the screenplay. But ended up leaving because of all the delays and uncertainty about the film. There was problems with actors unions which caused New Line to consider filming the movies in Eastern Europe. Which resulted in protests in New Zealand. It was changed from being 2 movies to a trilogy late in the process. So it just suffered from so many set backs.

Dunno if anyone pointed it out but the place where the trolls turned to stone - is the same place where Aragorn gave medicine to Frodo when he got stabbed by a Nazgul, it's the place where Arwen took him. They only did two verses of the Misty Mountains song, but you and I had identical reactions to it. Now that I've seen the film, I can't read the full song without hearing these actors singing it. Here's the full lyrics: Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away, ere break of day To seek the pale enchanted gold. The Dwarves of yore made mighty spells, While hammers fell like ringing bells In places deep, where dark things sleep, In hollow halls beneath the fells. For ancient king and Elvish lord There many a gleaming golden hoard They shaped and wrought, and light they caught To hide in gems on hilt of sword. On silver necklaces they strung The flowering stars, on crowns they hung The Dragon-fire, in twisted wire The meshed the light of moon and sun Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must away, ere break of day To claim our long-forgotten gold Goblets they carved there for themselves And harps of gold; where no man delves There lay they long, and many a song Was sung unheard by Men or Elves The pines were roaring on the height, The winds were moaning in the night. The fire was red, it flaming spread; The trees like torches blazed with light. The bells were ringing in the dale And Men looked up with faces pale; Then Dragon's ire more fierce than fire Laid low their towers and houses frail. The mountain smoked beneath the moon; The Dwarves, they heard the tramp of doom. They fled their hall to dying fall Beneath his feet, beneath the moon. Far over the Misty Mountains grim To dungeons deep and caverns dim We must away, ere break of day To win our harps and gold from him!

@@charliefarmer4365 Sam was elected Mayor of Hobbiton - one of 3 offices in the Shire - the other two Master of Buckland and Thain of the Shire belonged to Merry and Pippin, but only this one was elected the others were inherited by sons. Thain's office is most similar to steward for the king, and his duty is to protect the Shire military and Master is the tribal chief of the Bucklanders and Buckland province of the Shire. Sam and Rosie got 12 children. Elanor was the only child whom Frodo was able to see before his sailing. She was only half year old in the book when he left not about 4 - 5 year old like in the movie. Elanor the Fair known as the most beautiful girl in the Shire with golden hair and the most elven of hobbits children born after war - Sam believed that the beauty and health of Shire's children born after the fall of Sauron was actualy a gift from the Lady of Lorien. Elanor was handmaid for queen Arwen and she lived with king and queen in their rebuild northern (Arnor) capital Annuminas for a year AFAIR. Elanor married Fastred Fairbairn from Greenholm and they settled on the west frontier of the Shire in a new province of Westmarch given to the use of hobbits by the king. It was near the ancient elven town - White Downs' towers - from which you could see the sea. After Rosie died - like 60 years after they married - Sam went to the harbour to sail (with Lord Celeborn) on one of the last ships of Cirdan the Shipwright - you can see Cirdan standing just behind Galadriel and Elrond in the Gray Havens scene - the guy in blue robes. But Sam passing tru to the shore he visited his oldest girl last time and gave her the Red Book, the one which Bilbo and Frodo wrote. And so the book is called the Red Book of Westmarch as the family of Fairbairns was appointed its guardians from now on. The copies of the Book were given also to Than Peregrin II and Master of Buckland and to the king Elessar of course. The second of Sam's children was named Frodo (its the baby on Rosie's hands - funny movie thing about his hair though... he should be blonde like his parents not suspiciously darkhaired like his namesake :D ) and he become great gardener just like his dad. Frodo Gamgee changed his family name to Gardener and so the Gardeners were from his line and Fairbairns from Elanors line. There were also Sam's children named after Merry, Pippin, Bilbo and Rosie and some of Sam's children were named after his brothers and sisters even (Hamson, Halfred, Daisy, May and Marigold). AFAIR his second daughter was named after Rosie.

As a bit of background - at the start of the movie the Dwarven King is Thror. As the movies makes clear he became obsessed with gold, to all else. Thror wore one of the rings of power created by Sauron. (The same set of rings that corrupted the Kings of Men into the Nazgul in "The Lord of the Rings". Sauron had hoped that the same thing would happen to the Dwarves but they had powerful constitutions and were able to resist the power of the rings. As a result, they weren't corrupted like the Men but the rings did increase the negative traits the Dwarven Kinfs already had. In Thror's case it made him greedy for gold and hostile to the Elves (which the Dwarves were generally not friendly with). The book "The Hobbit" was written by Tolkien as a children's book. That's why you have trolls who speak "English" and are called Tom etc. Unfortunately, this sits somewhat uneasily with the later "Lord of The Rings" (which was written for adults). The movie makes a reasonable stab at attempting to merge the two. Some scenes are better than others (the dwarf scenes in Bilbo's house are excellent imo). However, Jackson continues to be obsessed with Elves (what is it with his Elf fetish?). Not so much in this movie but the 2nd and 3rd parts will (imo) have far too much elf nonsense in them (to the detriment of a story which is supposed to be about DWARVES and a HOBBIT!) The third movie in particular is very badly edited. The extended version of the movie has a much better version of the battle than that scene in the theatrical release. The latter just goes on and on and on with more and more ludicrous action "effects". Imo therefore, part 1 is very good. (I liked it anyway). Part 2 is pretty good but too much Jackson Elf nonsense (Legolas I'm looking at you). Part 3 pretty rubbish. Drags on and on and on endlessly

There's quite a bit more backstory to the whole Dwarves & Elves feud than just Thror being greedy. But the great thing about Tolkien is that he ties certain events together. For example when Galadriel looked into Gimli's soul when they were in Lothloriën (in the Lotr books) and said 'gold would never rule his heart'. Is both a callback to the Hobbit and Silmarillion. This was when she gave him the three hairs (a sentimental gift) that Gimli considered of far greater worth than whatever jewels there were beneath the Earth. It is a particularly powerful thing to have said about you, when the Dwarves basically were known to be greedy. Plus she had denied Feanor, an elf (and I believe distant kin to her) that same favour 3 times.

Thror's craving for gold was due to his having one of the Dwarven Rings of Power mentioned at the beginning of LOTR. Unlike Men, who could be corrupted and subdued utterly to Sauron's will ie the Ringwraiths or NAzgul, Dwarves proved too tough to dominate, but those who had a Ring, while it gave them the ability to garner huge fortunes, also gave them the proverbial "dragon sickness', ie the constant craving for even more.

There’s a theory that Smaug craved Erebor’s gold because when he was still very young, an army of dwarves raided the mountain where him and most of his species resided. His father hid him, but every adult dragon was slain by black arrows, and when Smaug left his hiding place he came out to see his parents bodies being skinny and gutted for resources and his siblings being dipped in molten gold to sell as trinkets. The dwarves and men who attacked the mountain left with their newfound resources and gold they got from ransacking the dragon’s horde, adding it to Erebor’s vast collection of it. Smaug sees it as his own, because it is. He wants revenge.

The dots over letters were used in Elvish languages Tolkien invented (Quenya and Sindarin) - they signified vowels, since actual letters were mostly consonants (like in Hebrew). Since languages of Men and Hobbits were descended from Elvish, so in-universe they kept the dots over some letters, even though they had actual letters for vowels.

Bilbo tells the story of the trolls in the LotR, at his 111th birthday party to the kids. You can also see the stone troll in the Fellowship of the Rings when Arwen arrives to help Frodo after he’s been stabbed by the Witch King. Sam also says something along the lines of “Look Mr. Frodo! It’s Uncle Bilbo’s trolls!”

I'm so glad your watching this. Tolkien was the one who wrote the stories with Fada (those dots and strokes attached to letters) we use them in Ireland but I don't know what they mean, I know some show that a letter should be pronounced together like a and e , r and h, o and u like when you them out your actually sounding out the letter sounds different. Tolkien was a professor of language and a language expert he wrote down most of the languages of middle earth and they are basically real languages in the way he wrote them, they are near as complete as any real language in the world today particularly Quenya and Sindarin. If I remember correctly Quenya is primarily used by Elrond and his people, while Sindarin is primarily used by the elves of Mirkwood. Dwarves tend to live for hundreds of years north of 200 or 250. Elves don't die unless mortally wounded, Hobbits live some 100 years plus and men unless descended from the ancient race of Númenor live the shortest life spans, I'm not sure if long life of Númenorian decent is mostly inherited by the Dúnedain rangers and Gondorians. I know it is a common trait among the rangers of the north and less so in Gondor usually occurring in the great houses where Numenorian blood is still strongly present. It's possible the black Númenorians also have these long life spans as the mouth of Sauron was a black Númenorian and he was definitely ancient although Sauron may have had a hand in that ones particularly long life. The corsairs in return of the king are descended black Númenorians.

Fun fact! The reason why Bilbo puts three little dots over the letter “a” when he writes is because in the Elvish alphabet the letter equivalent to “a” is represented by three little dots over either the letter before or after it (it depends on which version of elvish it is).

The three dots over the "a" are actually the way to write "a" in the old elven language called Quenya. Here it's likely just a decoration of the text or vestige from that old language.

"Three rings for the Elven-kings under the sky, seven for the Dwarf-Lords in the their halls of stone nine rings for men.." The reason why Thorin's grandfather was so crazy for treasure is because he had one of the seven rings given to the Dwarves. 8:05 At the beginning Gandolf was talking about all the ways 'Good Morning' can be used, which is a way to show that language has a powerful ability to define reality. At this point Gandolf is Defining Bilbo as a Burglhar/Important, mainly because he says he is. Gandolf rarely uses obvious magic, that is noticeable and showey. This is a rare time when he uses a Word of Command and requires the 13 Dwarves to accept his own definition of language/reality. All accept fully but not Thorin, who has the strongest willpower. Also, Thorin is the one most vulnerable to greed, which is a disease, the same disease that all great dragons suffer. By joining this quest the Dwarves must include Bilbo on the corporate agreement, which gives him 1/14th of the profits, or one item of his first choosing. It is the thought of this 1/14 share (of DWARVEN treasure) that is at the heart of why Thorin is always rejecting Bilbo's inclusion and value. You asked "Why Bilbo and not a friendlier Hobbit?" At the first scene Gandolf says that Bilbo is the son of Belladonna. She was a matriarch and founder of the Baggin estate and maybe even Baggsend, as it is a separate township in the Shire. She was clearly a free thinker and maybe also an Adventurer, but she created so much abundance(contrast with Smaug's treasure horde) that the family became wealthy and gave up quests so the other Hobbits would respect them again. BTW, they are so wealthy they have servants, like a gardener named Sam. Anyway, Gandolf knows Bilbo has the best DNA for this vital quest to make a strong Dwarven kingdom to balance out the growing return of Sauron, so he forces this meeting and this contract, which triggers the wander-lust in Bilbo's soul. In this sense, it explains why Gandolf tells the Dwarves to eat all the food in the pantry, so the comforts of home are greatly diminished.

•It's a grammatical thing; I'm not entirely sure, but it makes calligraphy more artful. •So the Dwarves' ever-growing lust for gold is partially explained as an effect that the 7 Dwarven Rings of Power had on the Dwarf Lords; it intensified their love of gold to hoarder level. •Unfortunately, you'll have to wait til the next film to see Smaug. This film, you see parts of him and even then, in this film, he had 4 legs and a pair of wings while in the remainder of the trilogy, his wings are attacked to his arms. •Tolkien was a member of the Inkings, a group of fantasy writers from Oxford. Another member was C.S. Lewis and he also featured dragons as lovers and hoarders of gold. It's symbolic to emphasize the effects of greed. •That's how it's actually written in The Hobbit. •Gandalf is marking the door so that Thorin and Company can find Bag End. •Balin and Dwalin are brothers, the sons of Fundin, and kin of Gimli. Balin is the future Lord of Moria, whose tomb will serve as a skirmish zone for the Fellowship. Gimli's father Gloin is also a member of the company. •Credit to Dwarves, they may eat like good Scotsmen, but they clean up after themselves. •Yes, Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thrain, son of Thror, now King Under the Mountain-in-Exile and Lord of Ered Luin in the Blue Mountains. •Bilbo is the company's "expert treasure hunter" and you'll need one if you plan on reclaiming treasure from a dragon. •Dwarves have an average lifespan of 100-200 years, longer than Men, but they are still mortal. •Yes, in the world of Middle-Earth, that is the story of how golf was invented. •When the trailer first came out, I sang this song a lot. My brother thought it was creepy until he saw the film. •Durin was the First and Greatest of the Seven Dawrf Lords. It was he who dug too deep into Moria and unleashed the Balrog, who later became know as "Durin's Bane". That is why the Line of Durin relocated to the Lonely Mountain; to Erebor. The Dwarves have tried to reclaim their ancient homeland many times from the Orcs and Goblins, but to little avail. •And that is why they follow Thorin Oakenshield; that is why we can call him King. I use that line in reference to the Lord Christ. •In the book, Azog the Defiler is killed at the Battle of Moria by Thorin's cousin Dain, son of Nain, Lord of the Iron Hills. Dain did behead him. Seeing him in the film is part of why people prefer The Lord of the Rings films. •No one ever said trolls were known for their cooking or intelligence. •Nope, remember in the Fellowship, they're still stone. •Just outrun them. Tire them out and sneak away. •Rivendell is lovely.

Three dots above a letter are an element of Elvish script where they represent the letter A (over a consonant). It's just to make it look more like it belonged in Middle-earth. Ironically the way in which the hobbits and dwarves use these elvish letters does however not even use these superimposed signs (tehtar) for vowels, but letters.
@Ahris22
@Ahris22 3 года назад
Two dots over a letter is typically an 'E', believe it or not and a ring is an 'O', they are to be combined with the letter underneath so an 'Ä' is actually 'AE' and an 'Å' is 'AO', an 'Ö' is 'OE'. These are unique vowels so you don't pronounce them in sequence but both at the same time. The writing in the movie has three dots however and is probably just decoration because we know that the words are pronounced with normal vowels. :)

Ah, the battle of Azanulbizar, fought outside Moria's eastern gate. One of the most awe inspiring, and tragic achievements of the Dwarves. I was glad to see it on screen, though the shift around some plot points and I question if it was really necessary for the story of the Hobbit. This was the final battle of the War of Dwarves and Orcs that raged for 6 years across, and mostly under, the north of Middle Earth. In the books Thror's death, and mutilation, is actually what sparks it, and it's not a war to reclaim Moria but to avenge him. It's fought with immense savagery by both Dwarves and Orcs, this was a genocidal war, the Dwarves intended to wipe the Orcs from existence, and they almost managed it. It would take many years for the Orcs in the Misty mountains to recover. The Dwarves... didn't. It's estimated that the Dwarves numbered almost ten thousand at the final battle. Half didn't survive. The Dwarves gained their vengeance, but nothing else. The 6 other Dwarven houses which had rallied to the cause dispersed back to their homes, and Durin's folk didn't have the strength to try and retake Moria.

@@ComeOnIsSuchAJoy I am not as totally against it as some Tolkien purists are. If the Hobbit movies where to act as prequels to Lord of the Rings then showing how Gandalf and the White Council faced Sauron at Dol Guldur is necessary. But for a trilogy called "the Hobbit," it's a shame that Bilbo (who is supposed to be the main character) disappears from the front of the story as the narrative runs away from him. Instead focus is put on Thorin, and the Dwarves, and while I really like the Dwarves (they are my favorite race in LotR), I am not sure they should have been the main focus. It's even more sad since Martin Freeman is such a perfect Bilbo.

going west with the elfs isn't technically dying, but I am sorry to say that it is a metaphor for dying, when you go west you leave middle earth forever, Gandalf describes death to pippin as "white shores and far green country into a swift sunrise" if you are standing on a shore looking inland and see a sunrise that land is to the west. and you might want to listen to the song "in to the west" that won an oscar for Lord of the rings. it is hard to see how that song is not about dying. the story is also more beautiful and emotional that Frodo is going to "heaven" and Sam can not follow even if a part of him wants to. "The journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take."
