@Danilo Oliveira I think you are confusing allegory and symbolism. The stone giants could symbolise a thunder storm, but they do not have an allegorical meaning that Tolkien intended because he hates purposeful allegory. @JashinSacrifice
@JashinSacrifice 3 года назад
@Jon Mercano Not really. Saruman wants to keep the council’s attention away from Dol Guldur so he can search in the nearby Anduin river for the One Ring (because that is where Isildur died). This is also the reason why Sauron took residence on the Dol Guldur to search the river. Saruman fears that if the White Council was aware of Sauron’s motives and guarded the Vale of Anduin or maybe even look for the Ring themselves (and possibly find it) he would lose his opportunity to find and master it before them realizing it.

“What did he eat?” Well there is this thing called hibernation, where animals sleep for a long time to conserve energy when there’s not enough food. I’m not sure if that’s actually the case, as in fiction dragons are also known to sleep for a long time, protecting their hoard
@barbarosa3d239
@barbarosa3d239 3 года назад
I think it is originally called desolation of Smaug, because he ate and destroyed everything around Erebor in few kilometers. I do not think he slept for 200 years without any waking up, but maybe I am wrong :)
@Thundarr100
@Thundarr100 3 года назад
Many stories about dragons supports this theory, as well as games such as Dungeons and Dragons. Another theory that makes a lot of sense, especially if combined with the theory of dragons hibernating for years on end, is that they have a very slow metabolism. Similar to that of a shark, when a dragon eats it takes them a long time to digest their meal. While sharks take days to digest what they eat, dragons take weeks or even months to do so. Another thing to consider is that dragons can eat virtually any organic matter to sustain themselves, including carrion. Many dwarves died the day Smaug took Erebor. He could easily have woken up, eaten a few dead dwarves, and then gone back to sleep. He probably would have preferred to eat fresh killed prey, but that would mean leaving his treasure hoard. And dragons are loathe to leaving their treasures.

@@johnswenson9140 Considering the fact that dragons aren't real, OF COURSE HE'S ASSUMING THAT THAT'S THE CASE. I;ve read a lot of Sword & Sorcery stories in my life, watched a lot of Sword & Sorcery movies (Dragon Slayer, Dragonheart, etc) and have been playing D&D (or some form of fantasy TT RPG) since 1988. There is no one answer as to why dragons sleep so long or how long they can go without food. A dragon from Middle Earth might have different dietary requirements than a dragon from Krynn, or a dragon from The Forgotten Realms, or a dragon from the Dragonheart Universe. Dragons might hibernate like bears. They might have slow metabolisms like sharks. They might be able to eat long dead rotting flesh and not get sick from it. They might even be ablt to actually gain nutrients by eating gold. We do not know. Heck, it could even be all of the above for all anyone knows. I will agree with you on one thing though. Before you read the LOTR trilogy you should read The Hobbit. It is a short, delightful book. In tone it has quite a lot in common with George MacDonald's "The Princess and the Goblin." Tolkien wrote The Hobbit mostly for his children and as a way to try out some parts of the languages he'd created and the world he would later fill out in LOTR. Sadly, the original edition of The Hobbit is no longer available. In the original the ring was merely called a magic ring and there was no foreshadowing of its importance in the LOTR. Also there was no mention of orcs, there were only goblins, as Tolkien only started using the word orc in the LOTR. After the LOTR was published and became successful Tolkien edited The Hobbit so that it foreshadowed the LOTR, as a way to unify the two stories a bit.

Nightangel21 Knight I really liked what Peter Jackson did with the Stone Giants. My copy of the book has a picture of them that just has them drawn like these giant cavemen throwing boulders at each other. 1) Gets pissed? That's certainly pushing it. Gandalf and Thorin get "A BIT vexed, PERHAPS", that Elrond found it first. 2) No, Saruman does not help Sauron at this point. Saruman wanted to find the Ring himself. The reason he finally agrees to attack Dol Guldur is because he now knows the last place the Ring was (the river), and want to chase Sauron away from that area. 3) The Stone Giants are in the book. Duaffy, it is important that you know that Tolkien from a young age made sketches of stories and characters but nothing concrete, it was until he got married, and began to write the Hobbit as a story to sleep for his children, from there he continued to write something and it He showed a colleague of his (CS Lewis the author of The Chronicles of Narnia) at the University of Oxford and it was the beginning of the Lord of the Rings, the sketches that he made before that were compiled and arranged and that became The Silmarillion A work that could not finish in life, it was completed by his son Christopher Tolkien years after his death. But Tolkien developed languages, cultures, geographic maps, myths and legends, all of Middle Earth.

The director Peter Jackson from the Lord of the Rings came in at the last minute to save the 3 movies so he didn't have enough time to make a good story. Before there were problems with the previous directors. Everything was put together really fast and crazy. That's why you have trouble connecting with the characters. He did the best he could with what he had.

smaug sleeps so he does not need to eat, and dragons love to accumulate gold thats why they are attracted to accumulations of treasures. it was the mistake of lords of dwarves that they were so greedy that they attracted dragons with all their money. thats also what it means in nordic myths - the greed and too much treasures is the way of destruction.

The biggest problem that most purists of the original books by Tolkien, is that the Lord of the Rings movies were each based on one book each, and the three Hobbit movies were based on ONE book. What is more, The Hobbit book was something that Tolkien wrote for his grandchildren, and so the story is much less intricate in that book as opposed to the Lord of the Rings books. So in order to make three movies out of the one Hobbit book A LOT was added that simply was not originally there. There was other reasons people pooped on these movies, but I think that was the main complaint people had. None the less, that does not mean that people cannot enjoy these films. They certainly have more of the original book than the animated movie that was made back in 1977. None the less, keep up the good work with these videos. :)
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 3 года назад
but most added things were actualy the things which existed in this universum - Nazguls, Sauron, Dol Guldur, White Council, Radagast - he is in LOTR books but not in the Hobbit book - and also Mirkwood forest was Legolas country in LOTR so how he could not be present in the movie made after LOTR? :) Only Tauriel, Alfrid and Bard's children were invented for the film. Every other person existed in this universum around the times of Thorin's quest.
@TallisKeeton
@TallisKeeton 3 года назад
One of the main things that the fans of the books have critisised Jackson for the most in this new trilogy was that from this short children's story he made 3 movies. You actualy nearly pointed out why he must did it such way. And I think that is what hard-core fans of Tolkien couldnt understand it. It was becouse there was a lot of introdutions to made and expositions to made and developing of charachters to made. We have here 13 dwarves, Bilbo, Gandalf as main charachters. The book was not focused - of course - upon the topic of exploring the charachters and developing charachters and their relations. With the main hero the books did good development but all those other guys - it was realy nearly zero. Gandalf was introduced in the book as well as in the movie. So I think that if not 3 then i m sure that 2 long movies were required to show not only developments of heroes but background of the world and relations between the heroes, esp the dwarves. the first film was generaly the exposition of main team :)

@HafdirTasare
@HafdirTasare 3 года назад
"Walk like a normal human!" She is neither normal, nor a Human. The Stone Giants are not realy a thing in the books, they are only a metaphor for the thunder of the storm if i remember correctly. The so called "Dragon Slumber" can be like a hibernation. The Dragon eats a lot, then goes to sleep untill he has to eat again. So 50 years of sleep is not unrealistic for him, since he drops most of his bodyfunctions down.
@Ryuvern

I'm pretty sure giants are real. Bilbo, Gandalf and Thorin speak about them in the novel. Of course they are't as huge as in the movie, because they stay in the bottom of the valley playing with rocks while Bilbo and the dwarves are crossing the Misty Mountains. And Thorin's company enter in the cave because of the giants. Also, Tolkien used to hate allegories.
