I remember you didn't see the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring, but there's a scene in Moria where Gandalf tells Frodo that Thorin gave Bilbo the mithril shirt, and that it's worth more than the value of the whole Shire. A kingly gift indeed.

Galadriel wears Nenya, the Water Ring, which is why when she goes all "creepy" she looks wet, and like she just crawled out of the sea. The 3 elven rings are the most powerful after the One Ring, and with the light of Earendil she's almost unstoppable. Which is also why she knows she has to refuse the One Ring in LOTR because she would literally just become another Dark Lord if she had it.

My favorite fun fact about this movie is in the fight with the White council you get to see the only named Nazgul. His name is Khamul the Easterling, the Shadow of the East and the Second Chief. He is the one with the horns on his helmet, and the big mace. He appears in the Lord of the Rings but is never acknowledged as anybody important so it is cool to see him, even if he still hasn't been named on screen. For instance he is the first ringwrath we see in the Fellowship of the Ring.

•Thorin's mind is on darker desires; gold. He has succumb to Dragon Sickness, the worst kind of greed. •The good news is the Master of Laketown was crushed by a dragon. The bad news is his deputy survived. Better news, Bard takes over as the new King of Dale, so the deputy has no real power. •Again, Saruman the White is still good in The Hobbit. It's sometime during the next 60 years that he falls to the Dark Side, but even then, it is theorized that he was never Sauron's partner, but was only seeking the Ring for himself. •ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qCY_ctV63HU.html Go to 4:39. I do not know how this scene got cut out from even the Extended Edition, but it adds more to why Thranduil is obsessed with reclaiming those gems. I will not spoil it. •The Ravens can talk; they deliver messages in exchange for shiny things. As Thorin is meeting with Bard, he is sending out calls for reinforcements. •That is the mithril shirt that Bilbo will later give Frodo. •Bilbo is contractually owed 1/14th of the total treasures of Erebor. He has claimed the Arkenstone as that 1/14th share and thus believes that Thorin would trade it for the promised treasures of Men and Elves. However, there's a tiny flaw in the plan; Thorin is not in his right mine and so he will just see it as an act of theft from his hired burglar (I noted the irony while typing). •Note that Gloin is wearing a helmet similar to that which his son Gimli wears in the Lord of the Rings films. •Ecthelion, son of Turgon, Steward of Gondor, is the father of Denethor and grandfather of Boromir and Faramir. •Yes, one of my favorite things about this movie is the variety in mounts. Not just horses and wargs, but war elves, war pigs, war goats, etc... •So yes, sadly, the Battle of the Five Armies will start off with 3/5th of the combating armies (the Dwarves, Men, and Elves respectively) fighting over their disputes over the treasure. They will come together when the 4th Army (the Orcs/Goblins) arrive. I will let you find out who is the Fifth Army.

Saruman only fought the Nagzul and Sauron because he wanted Sauron to leave Dol Guldur, which was fairly close to where Isildur was killed and Smeagol found the Ring. After this battle, he basically shut himself off from everyone else and refused to take any further part in the White Council, while he or his servants searched for traces of the ring.

Galadriel is a second-generation Noldorin, one of the first Elves to BE BORN in Arda. She saw the light of the Two Trees with her own eyes. She rested herself beneath them when the world was young, and at the feet of the Valar she learned how to work magic from the gods themselves. She is, hands down, the most powerful spellcaster in all of Middle-Earth, even WITHOUT Nenya. It is by her power, not the Ring's, that Caras Galadhon is forever suspended in the golden light of the First Age, as she remembers it. Add in that she is wielding the Light of Earendil, the captured sacred light of one of the holy Silmarils set forever in the heavens, the blessed light that burns and blinds all evil, and Nenya as well... Sauron, in his crippled form as the Necromancer, was no match for her. Not without the One Ring. She cast him from Dol Guldur as a stone is cast from a sling. After the Ring was destroyed, Galadriel returned to Dol Guldur, and with the last great effort of Nenya's waning power, destroyed the Hill of Sorcery. She tore it down to the bare hilltop, by herself, drove or destroyed the Orcs who lurked there, and undid every enchantment upon that dark place. She purged Mirkwood of its dark enchantment and drove from it the spiders forever.

Often overlooked how big the gift is Thorin gives to Bilbo. The shirt is made of Mithril which i stronger then steel and is valued as 10 times more as gold and maybe the second most valuable (in actual value and rarity of the material) next to the Arkenstone (the Elven heirloom in the movie was not in the book). And in this age of Middle Earth this might just be the last of the mithril left to be found anywhere. Gandalf says it is worth more than the Shire and everything in it and it beyond price (because it so so rare). And I think someone else said he could be a whole mountain with it. Besides his words at the end this is the one most important ways Thorin shows how grateful he is to Bilbo. Come to think of it, it also saves his live and that of Frodo a few times of course. which might be the most valuable thing of as Middle earth would not have been saved without them.

3:18 - This part in the book was the biggest eye-rolling I've ever experienced: Bard is a simple guard in Esgaroth. The special arrow is actually just a normal metal arrow that he shoots with his bow. He knows that Smaug has a hole in his chest armour made of gems because... A bird flies close to his ear and tells him!! Bard has the gift to understand the language of the birds. Considering that it was a book of children I had to accept it, but still. 11:48 - In the book the Wood Elves have an interest, yes, but they fundamentally acted to help the people. 19:32 - And that's the future King of Erebor.

And now we do understand the concept of "the ring" a little better: There s always a good side in a Tolkien's tales. They need to face their fears and fight evil. But what makes our heros struggle is not the threat from beyond, but the question of how they are about to react when they face the "darkness" within. Will they keep friendship and love or trade it for greed and selfishness? So what is th ring after all? A little shiny thing. But what does it stand for?

I told you Galadriel was freaking powerful. You understand now why she ultimately refused The One Ring... Christopher Less has done here one of his only if not the only good duy role in his entire career and it was his last one. I can't bare that mcuh CGI in the armies scenes...

About “kings doing whatever they want”, yeah, was like that. We tend to romance and fantasize about the past - but it was an authoritative mess. Of course here we are talking about fantasy, so it’s actually ok to demand that the dwarves stand up to Thorin.
@ethanquirk28
@ethanquirk28 3 года назад
Sage2000 the Kings do whatever they want is only ever a rule up to a point though. A King is ever subservient to the people who put him in that place of power as push them too hard and they are capable of putting someone else there instead. Same issue for dictators.
@Sage2000
@Sage2000 3 года назад
Ethan Quirk hello, mate! I would love to say that “people” has anything to to with “monarchy”. But in historical and tecnical terms, kings were absolute, and had powers “from God”
@ethanquirk28
@ethanquirk28 3 года назад
Sage2000 I’m not talking about “the people”, I’m talking about the cabinet, the court, the King’s council, whatever you want to call it. The King can’t rule a country all by himself. He needs gobetweens, people with powers and forces to enforce those powers in the name of the King. The King needs to pay those people to keep using those powers in the name of the King as opposed to against the King and keep them on his good side. Power and influence are about as fickle as they are intangible and if you press the boundaries, suddenly those people who control your armies and manage your treasuries may start to say you aren’t so much someone chosen by god as you are someone saying you’re chosen by god and as the ones with all the money and all the swords, they can be free to proclaim anyone who treats them better as the one truly chosen by god, as evidenced by their eventual victory in the civil war, funded and fought by the council against the old king with their new chosen one as a figurehead.

8:20 FUN FACT This scene is not canon. The white council and Sauron never met in Dol-Guldur. Sauron was already in Mordor when the white council arrived Dol-Guldur P.s its impossible Galadriel to beat Sauron because Sauron is a Maia(one of the holy ones). And Galadriel is just an Elven queen. Not a divine being unlike Sauron
@Cenindo

According to the Hobbit book, the wizards did indeed evict Sauron from Dol Guldur at this point, though in the literary version the details (and any involvement of Galadriel's) are left entirely obscure.

Galadriel was born before even the First age started, Tolkien thought of her to be one of the mightiest and fairest of the Elves left in Middle-Earth then add the power of her ring to her... Also Galadriel and Elrond are related, second cousins, Elrond later marries Galadriels daughter this making her his Mother in law and Arwens grandmother.

4:25 -- good catch! The painting is "Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. There is a 2003 movie starring Scarlett Johansson (!!!) telling a fictionalized version of how the panting was made, though I very much doubt that the Hobbit scene was Scarlett doing a Peter Jackson cameo ... They tried to show the Dragon Sickness as best as possible, showing how the huge amount of riches is getting Thorin so greedy, he will not share a single piece of it. The Arkenstone's purpos here was pretty much pointless in this movie, since in the books, Thorin desires the Arkenstone so much that he is, reluctendly, ready to give the fair share of gold to the Men of Laketown, but the whole situation is overthrown by the arrival of Dain and the following events. In the movie, he just get's more angry and is still unwilling to give away any riches.

I like movie a lot, but here are 3 huge flaws it had: lack of the OTHER war beasts which were shown in the concept art like the tiger, weasel, and more gross giant animals the orc/goblin army had, Thrain being mentioned to Thorin by Gandalf that he loved him before he died, and lack of more Wargs since the book had a lot of them with bats and goblins and orcs.

The new trilogy of Jackson is one of the most political fantasy movies :) It shows the many factions of the good guys not yet reunited to fight against Sauron in LOTR. And it also gave us the motivation, the explanation behing Thranduils enmity towar dwarven king. In the book it seems that he arrested the dwarves for no apparent reason. Or only for tresspasing in his forest. In the movie we can absorb all the informations from Thorin and Thranduil and Legolas and Tauriel and Bard and then we can assume that Thranduils reasons are strict political. His country is rich and it is also a fortress, which king would liked to see another much richer country spring up at his borders? Erebor could be a rival for the forest kingdom. Another regional power in all of Rhovanion region. Thats why Thranduil doesnt like the idea of restoration of Erebor. And maybe thats why he didnt helped them against Smaug at first scenes :)
