As a female Vet in a family of Vets, this song hits especially hard. Home Free gives these heavy subjects such beautiful voices and touch our hearts every time. Their real down-to-earth-ness and drive to make the world better through music is a large part of what makes such die-hard fans! Edit: My brothers were in a unit written about in 'The Devil's Sandbox' if anyone is interested. ❤

Every single time. The twist in this song just completely guts me. You should now check out the original. Homefree gender swapped it, and brought it to present day. The original (by The Chicks) was set in the Vietnam War.

Original version of the song had the soldier as male, and the one waiting back home as female. Home Free flipped that. Yes, you got it right, one of the last letters he received said that she was coming home soon, then he gets the bad news. It is both a beautiful and heartwrenching arrangement they've done here. 💕

Home Free seems to put out a song every year for Memorial Day. Thank you to the family that have felt the loss of a member of their family not coming home from the military

I am a female Army Veteran married to a Air Force Veteran. We refused to write each other while in theater because mail-call makes one sick when you know that "letter" can come at anytime. We also asked our commanders not to tell us if the other died until we got home so it wouldnt distract us from the mission, and we wouldnt be able to do our jobs which could get our buddies killed. We knew if his or my dog tags were hanging on the door of our home the other came home on an "Angel Flight" and our tour was over. We promised to keep fighting until the end and to see each other on the "other side" when God was done with us. We both made it, have 5 kids, 4 grandkids now, and are ministers helping other veterans who will have "seen war, and will never stop seeing war". Battle Buddies until the end... 💝

What I saw on your face, I felt in my heart. You were 100% right about sitting back and waiting for the feels with a Home Free song. I did loose a friend during the Vietnam era. The disbelief when I found out he had been killed in action is a place I would never willingly go through again. Even though we were long time friends, I can't imagine what I would feel if our relationship had been any deeper. However, it is a good poignant reminder to never take those who serve for granted, especially during times when their service is not in the news constantly.

I just love the facial expressions from 4:17-4:52as you slowly realize what’s happening and then your “sadly happy face” once you realized what did happen. (Not to mention the “this is wonderful” right before the music changed) This song was amazingly done by Home Free, and really honors ALL the veterans for Memorial Day.

I was afraid that was going to happen. 😪 Beautiful. The staging is so simple too. Nice to see the guys out of their Covid-19 boxes and together again. They were psyched up about it too. Looks like their tour schedule will stick this time too for the fall tour. Yes she died on duty is the assumption probably and IED or something. I am of the Vietnam era so it happened alot. Not as often as in WWII for my parents but definitely it was not uncommon.

I'm a Navy veteran the original version was a Male soldier headed to Vietnam. Home Free's take on the song is refreshing and reflective of our armed forces today. Oh, BTW, this one gets me every single time no matter the version

I first heard this on a Dixie Chicks album in the early 2000s and this song always made me cry. In their version it is the guy who goes off to war while the girl is the waitress. It makes lines like the piccolo player crying under the stands make more sense, but I enjoy the reversal and slight lyric changes they made to make it work. On another note, when I was in the Navy, letters were life, joy, and really got me through. I know communication is different now, but if you have a loved one that is deployed, a nice heartfelt email or letter will not be unappreciated.

My husband is a retired Marine and was in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Now we didn't do letters like in the older wars but those emails and infrequent phone calls were so cherished. There was a 3 week communication blackout when stuff was going down and the stress and fear felt was indescribable, sitting at home with a 2 yr old, just waiting to hear from him. This song hits so close to home and while mine came home safe and sound, so many more didn't. May we never forget their sacrifices. Home Free are so amazing and this is a wonderful cover.

The reason he cried wasn't because she died. The video showed her writing I am coming home soon. It was more of thinking what he would do if he had heard her name. This is a cover of a song that The Chicks sang. Home Free has been bringing out the perfect song at the perfect time. My dad, husband and three boy's are veterans. And waiting for the letters or phone calls from your loved ones. I have all the letters that my husband has ever written to me. I always really enjoy watching your reactions.

The song was done originally by The (Dixie) Chicks. The soldier was a man & it was a girl waiting at home. In addition, the soldier went to Vietnam rather than the Mid East. Home Free updated it a bit & switched the roles. Still a real tear jerker. HF did a beautiful job with the song.

the first time I heard the song, I thought it was a cute little love song, it was upbeat and the Rob's harmonies are amazing, after realizing it was a sad story of a loved one that will never return home, I started choking up.

My husband was in the service when an E-2 airplane crashed into the Sea, all 5 guys died. I belonged to the Wives club at the time and we met up with the wives whose husbands had died and they went upstairs to talk to each other and you could hear them crying. You never knew if your husband was coming home.

I would recommend listening to the original by the Dixie Chicks. Its fantastic as well. Both versions I can't get through without crying. When the original song came out my ex wife was in the army overseas and this song freaked me out. We sent letters every week and all of a sudden for 2 months the letters stopped without any warning. I feared the worst and hid away from any music for fear of hearing this song. I had it stuck in my head that if I heard the song it would come true. Then one day on the way home from work 3 blocks from my house at a stoplight a car pulled up next to me blasting this song. I locked up. I barely made it home. I dont remember even parking the car i just remember opening the door thinking my life was over when on the floor just inside the door on the floor was 2 months worth or letters in a bundle. I actually got a phone call from her the next day. It was all i could do to not fall apart on the phone. She had not got my letters until that morning she came home 2 months later and I never told her about the day my heart stopped and had those letters not been there who knows what i would have done.
