Things got a little crazy this week on the Mus-Art studio as the guys went high for the reciprocal roof. Watch the video and smack a like on it if you'd like. Shae :P

I was so scared, just for watching the make-shift support when putting the reciprical roof rafters up. I was like, "don't fall, don't fall, don't fall, don't fall!". And when the folding ladder was brought out... I'm glad I wasn't there. I would've fainted just watching it.

Way to go Shelly. Turn and walk away if it's too stressful to watch. Don't do the dumb thing which is yell "Gary! Be careful!", which causes him to instinctively jerk around to see where the sudden danger is and thus fall to his doom. Ha-ha. The dog looks like he/she is trying to tap out.

Recipricol roofs are extremly strong. You would want some cross bracing but teepees use it and they hold up to snow fine.

All of the applications I have seen using earth bags seem to be in dryer climates. Having lived in the PNW, would this work in our rainy, wet climate?
@Aaron-fd6lq
@Aaron-fd6lq 7 лет назад
mara2hope you could just use tarps and stuff to keep them dry
@katl1489
@katl1489 3 года назад
I dont think so, I live in a wet climate too and we are going to build a round house using local whole trees and have a reciprocal metal roof with pallet wall interior and exterior. The thermal mass is not needed and in a wet climate air flow is vital. Also a stove is a great way to keep warm and dry inside.

i hope your not going to put to much weight up on that roof? the rafters should really be going over and under each other so it is self sporting by each one sitting on the one below it. im not saying the way you have done it is wrong but it does not look like a strong design.
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 лет назад
+Kris Harbour Not much weight. We sheet with 1/2" and use lightweight Ondora roofing. We don't have much snow...maybe an inch then it melts. No major wind storms.

I dont think that the walls can handle the Roof load if you doesn't take away the side-forces (horizontal) the Roof will create. i think you have to install a horizontal Connection between the lower Ends of your Roof logs. i am curious about it :-)
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 лет назад
+Asae2 We are using a cable run at the bottom of the rafters to tie in the roof as a single unit. Check out how yurts work to see what I mean.

@joeblow3939

⭕⭕ 360° ÷ 8 =45° ÷ 2 because each side of your angle will share that angle equally = 22.5° this will give you a hexagon.

invest in some decent scaffolding if your going to work that high..
@betoian

Perhaps, next roof could be built upside down at the begining of the round walls. Then just flip it over and hang it...
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 лет назад
Umm... that's an idea
@betoian
@betoian 7 лет назад
The idea is not new. Architect Antoni Gaudi used to design his cathedrals using canvases with stones of different weights. Of course, upside down. Then he used the same measures to build the big ones. And for that reason they all looked so organic and nice.
@davidarias5435
@davidarias5435 7 лет назад
Yes, theoretically. However, I feel like there is a bit of a difference between the conventional construction a roof based on an upside down model and constructing a roof upside down and then flipping it over. No just about that... but if you have a vision do tell! Sounds impractical to me but, interesting things often happen in unexpected ways!

Lol this can go on one of those videos (why women live longer than men) Scary!I do have a question, I know you guys don't do this ,but I thought you might know the answer or maybe someone else does. I was wanting to know, when the walls are up if its ok to coat the bags with tar before you put stucco or lime plaster or what ever is going to be the finishing coat? Would tar melt the bags? Sometimes I see people putting tar on the earth bag walls to keep the sun off and to waterproof them. I was just wonder, I think its a good idea, but I don't want to ruin the bags. Thanks for your help
@mylittlehomestead
@mylittlehomestead 7 лет назад
+Amanda G Great question. We have not worked with tar as a vapor/water barrier for the earth bag structures. We are able to get the sticky clay/sand/dirt mixture to apply tot he exterior walls. Maybe....attach chicken wire after a tar application....? Not sure.
@Mandyblue1984
@Mandyblue1984 7 лет назад
***** Thank you so much for writing me back and for your help. My daughter and I are going to build a earth bag house and I'm afraid if we are to slow the bags might start deteriorating, so I thought the tar would be a great way to have the bags protected, yes we are planning on putting a tarp on the walls, but it gets really windy sometimes, you know how it is.

Nope. I'm very intrigued by earth bag structures, would like to build my own, and have been studying the method for a few months now. But using questionable fill in bags that are too narrow, resulting in unstable walls, and then putting a questionable roof design on top with cleats that are only anchored by a few nails into said small bags with questionable fill material... That's a whole bunch of nope, Nope, NOPE! This structure is going to fail. Walls will collapse. I just hope that no one is seriously injured.
