Recommended Books About Dog Training 

First time I have come across you Hans today. I have a super reactive GS'D, been let down by many trainers over the past two years, therefore started doing my own research on how to overcome some of the challenges and managed to resolve almost all. Not my first GSd but my first rescue and the most challenging. When I listened to you guys at first, interesting, but slow and, ahhhhh, I almost switched off, kept playing forward. But then comes one bit of advise, and then another bit, and more and more and then I play back because I could have missed something. Then I got hooked. And as I add things up from your different podcasts, I learn where I went wrong, but worse, where the so called professional trainers went wrong, simple, minute details. Just wanted to say THANK YOU Hans for your time making these podcasts. I can't wait to read your book when it is ready. Thanks

I grew up on Kohler and Strickland. I loved Winifred Strickland's "Expert Obedience Training for Dogs". I began with her method and found it humane and effective with the dogs I worked with. The dogs never seemed unhappy or mistreated. I can see how Kohler could be deemed a bit brutal, but I love his style and the fact he wasn't afraid to discipline effectively when needed. The modern human school system could take a lesson from him. I still have a copy of his book.

I'm having trouble finding a puppy. Covid seems to have messed up breeders in Canada. Just for companion, and a pet, obedience work, and a watchdog. My daughter and I live in a house with a fenced yard, and tried to find an Airedale for about 2 years, kept running into breeders who just quit, or didn't come through. So we've been waiting to hear from a GSD breeder in Colorado but he doesn't answer emails for some reason. Usually very professional, but seems to have gone off into the wild blue yonder. I have had Standard Poodles, and an Airedale, and Siberian Huskies. I have WG Strickland's book from the 80s, and always admired GSDs but was worried about finding a good breeder. Got 2 cats, and 3 rescued horses that are pastured out with a friend. Another interesting book is The Dog In Action, out of print now, and a book by Konrad Lorenz.

I bought the book by Colonel Conrad Most when I was 17 I’m 65 now I was learning to work with Rottweiler at the time.I went to shepherds after and never looked back.I currently have a Czech bred shepherd ,I’m also old school.Thanks for sharing your stories I enjoy them and share much of the same philosophy.

Have you ever found any books about the ancestors of the shepherd breeds? I am looking most for Malinois but will read about any continental shepherd breed. I see the old painting of shepherd's dogs in mainland Europe. They dont look like the Malinois German Shepherd or Dutch Shepherd. I want to understand how they came to be. I have Von Stephanitz book of course and a book called Dogs of the Shepherds, but too much on British breeds. Sadly I only speak English so limited. As for lard.... Lots of vitamins. Almost lost our son a few years back. I put on a lot of weight after the illness. We said to hell with healthy. Using more meat , animal cats and so on. He has lost 7 inches in his waist. Whole family lost fat built muscle. Enjoy good food.

I have a question I'm loving the videos and information but surely prey and defence intersect at the point the animal being preyed upon fights back as the dog tries to dispatch it?
