It is very sad that people needed this concept explained. It isn't a race, it is a showcase to show the differences in speed between road cars, tin tops and F1 cars. Very very simple concept people, don't let it confuse you.

Top Gear UK did something similar a few years between Clarkson in a Ford road car, Colin McRae in a WRC Ford Focus, and Johnny Herbert in a V10 Stewart F1 car.

My overturned Honda civic with gigantic almost comedically large spoiler, and tilted wheels, with lowrider capabilities, and the lowest suspension you've ever seen (literally you can hit a pebble and this car will crash), will out speed anything on the track! My oversized exhaust that shoots blue flames, and Nos tank for turbo busting will always guarantee me victory. Let's not forget the painted headlights and the under glow neon you can't see because the suspension is so damn low, the fuzzy dice in the rearview mirror, interior neon and a bass boost so loud my windows start to shatter, it's the ultimate racing machine!😉

It's funny how the SL63 was clearly going really slowly in the last 2 corners to let them catch up.

I don't really consider the SL63 AMG a "super car", just a very fast luxury car.

Thank for your kind words. All I wrote was "aerodynamic force is high from much lower speeds like 130 to 160 kph" which was simply expressing the view that high down force was generated at much lower speeds than you asserted. Look at your response. Good on you and happy F1 spectating:)

Love these videos! Old Top Gear (or was it some of Jeremy Clarksons own videos?) did two or three of these races. They never tire me :)

Yep. Well it broke the lap record by a lot but it was more like 20 seconds. But it wasn't even set up for Bathurst. It was geared for Melbourne so it was red-lining in 7th gear before it was even halfway down Conrod Straight. They reckon they could have knocked at least a handful more seconds off the lap time if set up purposefully. SL63 is what? 1850kg? haha, full luxury. the performance of the F1 and that " V8 Supercar " (or whatever the fuck) is awesome, hats off, but the SL63 steals the show. you can rip the road surface up, and have heated seats AND aircon on if your butt is freezing, but your hands are too warm :D amazing Mercedes!

but to answer your question - yes, we aussies get spanked with ads from our major commercial networks. the ones in this clip are relatively minimalist compared to some of the animated adverts which occupy the bottom third of the screen and jump around distracting you from the action. its a disgrace

All I can say is: it's a good thing my 2012 Honda Civic wasn't in that race or someone would have looked pretty silly!

I pasted the exact quote from f1 engineer, Gary Anderson. They are not my words. You originally wrote that "once it hit 300 km". This means you think it has insufficient down force to drive upside down below 300 kph. I challenged that. You didn't like being questioned. On some circuits the cars don't even reach 300 kph on the straights, so how would they drive inverted in your F1 world? On many circuits, turns are taken at speeds between 100 and 200 kph. Check out telemetry with G and speed.

Why didn't they take the audio directly from the sound mixing board instead of from a mic through the speakers. Australian is hard enough when the sound is clean, but as muddled as that was, I could barely understand it.

How do they calculate the handicap time difference? Is it based on top speed, power/weight or a combination of factors and if so how are they weighted?

I think I've seen something like that years ago with Michael Schumacher behind the wheel....

First, the speed I remember it from a Discovery Channel documentary about the McLaren Team. "F1 was designed by the race for the race." It means that the tecnology used in F1 cars (most of it) was improved based on it's experimentation and results in race conditions. Tested, analysed and improved to get better results. If your brain is small to the point of not understanding such a simple phrase you shouldn't even turn on your computer.

they used to do this kind of shit back in the 70's with rally cars and their equivalent road going stock machines from the factory. That is of course before group B rally took off in the 80's and made the craziest racing we'll EVER see

Now I did not read all comments. But I do believe the promoters of this little race took the fast lap of each car and started them off with the right amount of head start to have them reach the finish within seconds of each other. Just for crowd amusement. Who says there's on math in racing. Remember being .001 sec/p/lap X 250 laps is one hell of a win.

A modern F1 car could drive on the top of a tunnel upside down once it hit 300 kmh (estimated)... None of the others could even aspire to reach such an aerodinamic perfection status. F1 was designed by the race for the race.

If, if if......we are discussing real world and vehicles in race configuration. So somehow the driver has to get out after every turn and change the front and rear wings, then at the end of the straight, get out again and replace the wings with high downforce. That would occur 24 times per lap in a 12 turn circuit. The lap would only take about an hour:)
