Red Bull reveals F1 upgrades as radical Mercedes faces scrutiny

All eyes were on Red Bull on the final day of pre-season testing in Bahrain, following talk of a major upgrade that could transform Formula 1’s competitive order.
And while its car changes weren’t as extreme as those deployed by Mercedes at the start of the test - part of which could face a challenge from rivals - it was another salvo in a fierce development war that will rage throughout the 2022 season.
Red Bull has refined the design it grabbed the headlines with when the RB18 first broke cover on the opening day of pre-season testing in Barcelona. As always in Formula 1, it’s about taking a design that was already aggressive and making it even more so.

The speed in which F1 team engineers, fabricators, and mechanics can model, design, produce, test, and then install complex fixes to on-track discovered problems is nothing short of miraculous!!! They deserve as much spectator worship and reward for their behind-the-scene efforts as the drivers themselves, if not more. Pure genius.

Exactly. Others have mentioned the planned changes but the smaller often hard to see minor changes can take just as much effort if not more. Seems like McLaren was doing just that will the overnighted brake ducts.

Congratulations in becoming interested in F1 at a fascinating time! Its history is really interesting, of course, but the technology, analytics, and manufacturing techniques are the finest they've ever been right now. I remember the promise of the first ground-effect cars, which couldn't be controlled by the rest of the car, but, like you, I can't wait to see how things evolve in this new era. This season will be ground-breaking, with the next few probably being evolutions of what's started now, so enjoy!

@@jensboomgaard Well, not to a degree at least, Verstappen and Leclerc absolutely pushed above their limit but the same can't be said for their teammate, who probably brought new upgrades but more focused on improving the overall performance car to endure the race lap-by-lap. Those teams definitely have prepared for the race simulation since next week they will have the first Grand Prix weekend.

And these are on cars which are supposed to be some degree (not as much as thought, but still a little) slower than the 2021 cars! So that means Haas' development gains have really been incredible.

Surprising to see Haas going faster than a Mercedes but at the same time it is still not a race weekend so I guess we just have to wait and see on the first race weekend if Haas' pace is indeed real or not

Haas had the advantage of testing later than the other teams, when temps were cooler, so those times are very deceiving. Still hoping they can score some points this season though, a Haas podium would be incredible.

My hope is RB, Ferrari and Merc are all fairly close. Merc really didn't look good in test 2, but they were running with some horrible porposing. I'm thinking that's gone by R1 and we'll see Merc like old again 🤣. Should be an exciting season. Doubt we get a title fight like last year, but I hope we have some win variety again.

RB came out this morning and Checo went to the top of the charts, did some pit stops for practice and went inside for a late breakfast and was done. He saved gas and was resting for next week. Max's helmet looked like he was watching TV compared to the bumpy Mercedes making Russell look like he was dancing in the cockpit.

I think Redbull have figured out that with these setups having a smooth and stable car is the key to being fast. Even with the MB setup you can clearly see RB have a better idea how to manage the airflow over the car and where they want it. I'm sure MB will catch up

There is a different Haas went all out low full Max engine stand. And Ferrari, Redbull and Mercedes have more left in the tank. They did not went all out. And i think Haas did. But you never know, we Will see it next week.

You are all missing the point - EVERY team does low fuel runs, and track conditions aren't going to shave 3 seconds off lap time. There's real pace in the Haas cars, you can't argue that at all. I think they'll be a true midfield car, and wouldn't be surprised if they finished 5th or 6th in the constructors championship.

Ferrari are definitely a threat this year when you look at times done on what tires, they have only been beaten by others on softer tires and the fact HAAS has been up there also the last couple of days makes it look like the Ferrari engine is quite good and perhaps Ferrari haven’t run it at full spec in testing

Not only Ferrari was running with a down-tuned engine, they were also running with the same PU used in Barcellona. That PU has a mileage of about 4000 km! Both Wolff and Marko have admitted that Ferrari once again has the best engine...and this time not just performance wise but also reliability wise.

I believe Verstappen actually already had the fastest time on the soft tires (same as Leclerc) before switch to the ultrasoft ones so this is actually wrong. Perez also had a better time than Sainz in the final morning session even though he had harder tires. I won't deny Ferrari is looking well though.

Thanks for the content folks. Just a small criticism of the way the videos are cut. Sometimes when you split screens you are putting the OLD on top and NEW underneath. Sometimes it’s the other way around. It would be preferable if you kept to one standard, as you are packing so much info and visual cues into the comparisons, that I feel like I miss something if I have to glance to the lower left to check I’m looking at the the right version. Personal opinion, I prefer looking at the NEW when in split screen so that’s where my eye is wandering. If I know it’s always the bottom half of the screen, I’m happy 😎. Thanks again.

Your comparison photos at 0:58 are contradictory. First comparison shows 'day 2'/'day 3', with the 'day 3' image showing the more contoured side pod and undercut. Second comparison shows 'new'/'old', with the photos now showing the opposite - 'old' showing the more contoured side pod and undercut.

In NASCAR, there is a maneuver called side drafting, where you tuck into an opponent's trailing wake off of the front of the car, inches from each other, to reduce drag and gain a slipstream while side by side. I wouldn't be surprised if these drivers figured out that they could do the same thing, but different. What's to say that you can't nose the front wing over a few inches and disrupt the airflow while side by side, making the guy next to you start porpoising and bounce him down the straight?

While that’s possible, as the side vortices are critical for holding downforce approaching a braking zone, the new F1 regulations intend to keep most of those vortices within the line of tires. A car that significantly disrupts an opponents airflow, like you suggest, risks being banned on a 8/10 majority vote by the teams. Whatever BS was talked this week, the FIA does now have a “spirit of the regulations” regulation when it comes to not having a disruptive wake that makes it hard to follow your car.

Winglet shouldn't be allowed in any motorsports. Previously, it was MotoGP with Ducati now it's F1 with Mercedes. Simply said, not only it gives the dirty air for another car behind but also, it's prone to give the maximum turbulent for the car itself, it's not only safe and therefore dangerous but also it scrutinizes the other team's upgrades as well. So, I'd expect FIA to re-introduce the winglet just like what FIM did with fairing.

While Mercedes are under-deploying their battery power on the straights to hide their true speed, something is not right with their handling. In turns approaching 90 degrees both drivers have to make secondary corrections for oversteer. They probably have a front wing solution under manufacture, but its odd they didn’t get this fixed during the test. Maybe they were focused on the porpoising, but they didn’t seem to fix that either. They have a lot more work to do for Race 1, but the Merc will make a race distance. That’s still a maybe for McLaren who could be faster if they could only stop the car.

Mercedes should be more concerned with overheating with no side pods, when following a car they cannot overtake. That will send any car with small side pods temp sky high. We even saw that in the past from cars with large side pods.

LOL.. I love when on engineers start commenting utter non-sense. CLearly the airflow is not significantly being compromised to cool the brakes and engine. They would have accomodated for that

I wouldn’t be surprised if Mercedes-Benz returned to the Barcelona side pods for the season opener. They definitely seemed faster with those than the new ones. I feel bad for Norris too because I don’t think he thought that he would be performing preseason testing solo this early on in his career, but I think he’s got this though.

Am I the only one who saw, and liked the title pic with that bright green on the bottom of the side pods of the new RB car? I know it's "wishful thinking" but I'm still hoping for the return of NA engines thus bringing back the excitement of the sound to F1 and these new bodywork designs. I've attended GP's in the late 70's as well as the early 90's. I'll never forget that shrieking, screaming sound from the Ferrari flat 12's at my first U.S GP. It was such a unique sound that you could close your eyes and tell when the Ferraris were screaming past! Next were the V10's and again, the sound just added another dimension to the entire experience.

Vandoorne & Di Resta won't attend the Bahrain GP, so they're automatically off should Ricciardo still be unfit for driving. Even IF Ricciardo couldn't participate despite his isolation phase ending in time for the event, De Vries would probably be the first choice unless he was already substituting for either Merc driver. However, I'm sure these considerations won't arise at all.

If I had to make a prediction: Red Bull and Ferrari will have the strongest cars out the gate but Mercedes will start winning races once the European leg of the season begins

Normally red bull is also really good in making upgrades. I think that merc didnt show their hand and fight for the pole and the win next week.

I would like to see different race winners and a 3 or 4 team fight for the WDC. I dont doubt that mercedes is going to their shit together and be back in the fight. However, I would love to see other teams making them work for it and even beat them anything but the usual merc 1-2. The hype is real and ferrari is looking so put together and they are giving me so much hope👀

I find it hard to comprehend how new car designs plus numerous updates over the coming months can be done with less budget than last year. I'm wondering if fans will notice the budget cap and if the smaller teams will, as I predicted, be hit hardest ... with HAAS and Williams being the first teams to have to drop tests because of a lack of parts.

Ehm I might not be an expert not know the exact numbers but I doubt teams like Haas and Williams are ever going to hit the budget cap. The new budget cap does not increase their income.
