I make a how to style video of removing the transmission. I'm swapping mine for a 4l80 so I don't show installing it

I’m a do it your selfer novice mechanic- I popped my transmission cherry with a 2000 Silverado 4l60e tranny- this video was my guiding light. I recommend the following for those who come here from the future seeking guidance. Get a helper, as I did it on floor elevated with ramps.Change rear seal, oil pressure switch, and remove & clean oil pan while your here. Use Heat gun on neutral switch connectors for removal and reinstallation. Ratchet straps to reinstall/ lift tranny back on if no transmission jack is used. Took 2 full days for My 1st time1 full day removal, 1 full day clean, new seals and switches and reinstall. On my make model- you cannot access oil pump- separate job removing front end removing crank. May patience be with you.

On the drive side . the top bolt with the bracket the holds the fuel lines. Im having a hard time getting it off.

I get to learn how to replace the transmission in my Chevy because it exceeds the value of the truck to have someone else do it. I can see that I'm going to need more tools and help because I'm old, not strong, and a girl. But my Dad is a mechanic, and taught us girls a few things. This is just a way bigger job than I have ever done. He did all the complicated stuff, but he is not available anymore. Even if he came over to this side of the mountains, he is in his seventies and doesn't deal with transmissions in big ole Chevys anymore. So... first job... clear out the garage. Because it's rainy season and cold as all get out.

Aye bro how crucial is it to correctly torque fly wheel bolts? My torque wrench dont go all the way to 70 lbs but i got a good 50-60 lbs u think i should be good?

How the hell did you get the torx bit on that nut at 5:42 of your vid? I have no room when I turn the crank to get that socket on. I have no room for a ratchet in there. is there a extension on it? Also a 02 Yukon I worked on this week had 2 17mm bolts on the starter. Didn't have that plastic shield plate either.

Catloco's Garage normally I just put the bolt at the highest point that way its farther out from the block. And I use a small 3/8 breaker bar that has a small head to crack it lose then jus use a regular ratchet

JH Garage When i turned the crank it basically put it in 3 positions that I only had clearance for the socket. I’m gonna try turning the flywheel with a screwdriver or pry bar on the teeth. Then I may get access to the bolts.

Catloco's Garage this was not a problem to access on my 2000 Silverado’s 4L60e through starter access- I had a helper hold crank and rotate

Allan Sifuentes yes removing the transmission is the easiest way of changing the flywheel. You could remove the engine but that’s more wiring to unplug and a little more difficult

For the safety switch and that crap, heat it up with a heat gun, or what I did is used my mapgas torch from a few inches away because I’m a night owl 🦉 and by the time I left, Walmart was closed at nowhere in town had heat guns for sale at that time. Ofc couldn’t find my heat gun either so…. Yeah.

one question im currently changing my transmission on my 2003 4.3 vortec i bought one from a 5.7 vortec 2000 will anything change on transmission?? both are shortbed single cab

Karyme Ibarra if the transmission is same (4L60e) everything should be the same if doing a 4L80e that’s when everything changes

I use a hair dryer on my shifter box and the plugs came right off.

Just for future reference it's not glue in your neutral safety switch connections it's usually white lithium grease to keep your connections from rusting or any corrosion 🖒

Wassup bro good video but I’ve seen some guys use a hair dryer for the connectors with the glue it heats up the glue and you can pull them right out. Just a tip if needed good video though bro.

I know its 3 months ago but you can use a tranny lift and just slide it back enough to pull out the tc and replace back.

I understand that both these are from a year ago, but here’s my 2 cents. I imagine there would not be a problem in not draining, however, in this design, as soon as you pull the driveshaft, fluid drains out anyway. So even if you are just changing out u-joints you’re going to lose fluid
