I'll be honest, I'm on board with the kid deleting Google Classroom as a form of protest. "If devices aren't allowed in the classroom, then the classroom isn't allowed in devices," is a *great* slogan, honestly. I hope he started a local revolution.

@AaronJLong
@AaronJLong Год назад
So from what I've seen, some schools have been loaning students laptops for the school year, and after Ipads became a thing I remember hearing that schools were wanting to provide tablets to students. I think that is good, as you basically need to have some kind of tech and know how to use it to even function in today's world unless you're going to live completely off the grid. I don't understand the "no devices" rule. It kind of made sense back when a phone was just a phone. Even then you could use the program feature on a TI 83+ to type notes to smuggle in to tests that allowed calculators. I don't know what's going on in schools nowadays, but I'm not surprised that they are behind the times. I thought the Soviet Union was still a thing until the late '90s because our textbooks were that old and that's all we really had to go off of.

My mum really likes to talk about how she did programming in the 80s and 90s, she's extremely tech-literate, she used to get these pamphlets and hand-copy code into the computers so they would work, etc. She also once asked me to remind her which way the review scale went, and was one star bad or did it mean the thing was number 1. I still don't know what she thought the other stars meant. Also, this was relatively recent. 2020. She's done buckets of online shopping before.
@AmyEugene
@AmyEugene 10 месяцев назад
If your mom was doing programming in the 80s then I'm assuming she's over the age of 60. I remember a few occasions when my mom was in her 60s where she made a comment or asked a question or did something that just struck me as odd, kind of like the example you gave, where it was hard to see what made her ask that question from a logical standpoint. It was really infrequent, like a year or maybe two between occasions where she did something that just struck me as odd and it was always something that I'd have a hard time explaining to someone else the reason why it seemed so odd to me. Your comment kind of reminded me of that feeling. I just want to gently encourage you to keep an eye out for moments that make you go, hmmm? in the future. If you feel like they start happening more frequently, make a note of the date when it happens to see if there's a pattern. If you ever find a good moment to bring it up with her, then take the opportunity to have a conversation about cognitive issues and find out what she would really want her loved ones to do if she started having problems. What I learned with my mom is that cognitive decline is nothing like in the movies or on tv, it can take a decade or more to become an issue that affects daily life, but before it becomes obvious that something's wrong there's years of very small, subtle changes. It might look more like they just had a bad week or month because they were sick or something else happened and they weren't paying as close of attention to their finances or their purchases or appointments, whatever the issue is, and that caused things to go off track. It's something that's not like them to do and it's never happened before, so they and everyone around them looks for a reason that makes sense to blame it on. It's not until a few years later that you look back and realize, that was actually one of the first big signs that something was going on. I'm sorry this is so long and I'm not trying to scare you or jump to conclusions. I've just realized that people aren't aware of the signs that we should be looking for that indicate our loved ones are starting to have trouble. When my mom's decline became obvious, I knew nothing about cognition problems or how to deal with them or what doctors could do, so I felt like I had been suddenly thrown in the deep end and was in way over my head. I don't want anyone else to feel like that, because it was awful. I wish I'd been more informed when I could've still had a meaningful discussion about it with her.
@Amariyali
@Amariyali Год назад
I am 75% sure all the reviews stating 'I've never been here' comes from your phone tracking your location and asking you to review a store or business you walked passed or looked at the display windows or drove by. This happened to me a couple times in the past and I can easily see not so tech savy ppl not knowing that you can just ignore those messages and feel the need to leave a review even if they never set foot in said stores. A similar thing happens on amazon in the question section, where questions get sent via mail to customers who have bought the item previously. Even if they don't know the answer, they feel the need to give one because it wasn't clear that you can just ignore the message if you cannot help with the question.
@Melzim97
@Melzim97 Год назад
Just wanted to comment the same thing. Especially the amazon thing, the question was written like it would be a privat message. My mum always answered truthfully 😂and her boyfriend did the same with the google ones. They are just kind people. Now they know they can just ignore them.

@gecko2.617 Год назад

My mom owns a small butcher shop, we had 20 or something reviews, all with 4 or 5 stats, then, one day, I got the notification someone reviewed us with one star, saying he's never been there, but the meat were probably rotten, the place smells and offer terrible service. I was shock and very sad, as I knew not of that was true, then I read it again... Wait... Did he said he's never been here? What? Then I replied to him, saying we wouldn't be considering he's review and that he should probably stop by sometime and ckeck the store for himself and THEN, making a real review. Now, years later, we have a very loyal costumer that looks like the guy from the review, I can't say for sure if that's really him, but I like to think that he is. This one was hilarious. 🤣 I have my own bad review story. I'm a published author and someone left a 2-star review on one of my books. What I write doesn't appeal to everyone, so fair enough. However, in this case it wasn't a verified purchase and based on the review the person did not read the book at all (not even the "look inside" which would have informed them of a few facts). The entire review was written specifically to misgender me (I'm a trans man), call me out for being trans, and berate me for writing a "male character from a female perspective." (Funny thing is, the main character himself is also trans, so... 🤣). I don't make it a secret that I'm trans, but the entire review was just a personal attack. It took a few months, but thankfully Amazon eventually took the review down.

11:08 The other thing that can happen here is: Amazon reviews are tied to a particular product regardless of who is selling it (which is why reviews about shipping/packaging are useless). So, you can have scammers selling fake or cheap knock-off versions of a product but listed as the same as the real thing, and the reviews will get mixed together.

@felvkitties8
@felvkitties8 Год назад
How old are these people? And was that clearly explained before buying? Just wondering. People over 40 didn't grow up with smart phones or cell phones. So a lot of seniors might not understand that. I'm pretty clueless at tech but at least I know that. If something weird happens with my phone or computer I ask my husband. :) I know seniors are frustrating but the key is to ask lots of questions even the same one asked differently. And try to help.
@WelcomeApathy
@WelcomeApathy Год назад
@@felvkitties8 I don't agree with this. Phones that need to be charged have been around even before the modern cell phone. Look at wireless phones for the home that had little charger bases or car phones that had docks. These things have existed since before I was alive, and I'm almost 40. At this point, if someone doesn't know an electronic item needs to be charged to keep using it, they've been living under a rock. They also did not read the manual/instructions. That is not on the person selling the item. They shouldn't have to ask the same question in multiple ways to make sure that someone knows how to turn on or how to charge an item. There are instructions available everywhere; at the very least there are quick start guides that come with items that say "Fully charge before use" and how to turn the item on. I'm not saying that the store's help desk should be rude to the people who come up with dumb questions. They still need to be professional. But the people coming up with those dumb questions are still dumb for not even reading the instructions before coming to complain. You mention you ask someone before going into a store to complain. These people clearly didn't do that.

An explanation for the “local guide” thing: Google Maps sometimes ask whether you’d like to review local places and offers different bonuses, including money. If you sign up for that, it gives you a “Local Guide” badge and offer different places for you to review. This is likely also where the “I haven’t been there, but” reviews come from, as maps suggests some place to review and the person misunderstands

I tried to suggest that maybe she went to CAR TOYS (in the same mall as us) which DID sell cell phones at that time. Well, I'm sorry that I'm not the only person working there and some of my coworkers either being new or not the brightest or just the wrong department, but how is that my fault? I think this should be one of the places we apply AI, too. So, someone leaves a 1 star review, the AI quickly analyzes what they wrote and stops them with a prompt such as: "Hey there! We noticed you selected 1 star, but used positive terms in your review! Low ratings hurt and if you appreciate this service and want it to remain available, a higher rating helps a lot. Would you like to check and make sure you picked the right number of stars before proceeding?" I think most people are just lazy af and type out a review and then just click the stars and click enter as fast as they can without looking. Stopping and prompting them to correct it could snap some people out of their little robo-clicking mode and actually think about what they're doing. It's not feasible to hire humans to scan incoming reviews quickly, but an AI could manage it to an extent. It sees one star but reads "great food" and knows to halt the person and confirm, did they really mean to do this? Also there needs to be a way for owners to flag reviews and ratings that are nonsensical or unwarranted and skew the rating. Obviously removing anything you want isn't okay, but they should be able to flag a review, then the site itself reviews that flagging, sees that someone gave a 1 star rating but "never ate there", decides yes, that is inappropriate and doesn't belong with the real reviews, and allows the deletion of said review.

I think I can explain why all those old people are answering questions that they don't know the answer to on Amazon. I don't know if Amazon still does this, but they used to directly email questions from customers to you. This was completely random, sometimes you would get someone's question and sometimes you wouldn't. Usually it would be about a product you previously ordered or showed interest in. But even so, the email you would get would be very vague. It would say it's from Amazon but it seemed as if the question was being directly asked to you. You could type in your answer without leaving the email app and send it. So I'm sure these people had no idea their answer would be posted for the world to see. I can totally see people who aren't tech savvy getting this email and responding to it thinking that someone messaged them. That's why you see some of them say, "I don't know why are you asking me this?? What the heck?" Amazon did this because it was a good way to get people who owned the product to answer a question that they may know the answer to. Otherwise these questions would only be answered by the seller unless customers went out of their way to go to the questions page AFTER they own the product. They may have changed this as I haven't gotten one of those emails in years. But I hope they at least made it clear in the emails not to respond unless you know the answer lol

Google has been dabbling with increasing engagement by changing up the language in their apps, so some people are honestly not understanding that their reviews are being posted. And I think they've also added a "I don't know" button which basically does nothing, but it keeps people from posting that as an answer.

The hepatitis they're probably talking about is hepatitis A, which is a foodborne virus you get when food isn't handled or cooked properly! I learned about it in high school while taking a culinary arts program! The confusion is understandable though! 😅

@Adrian Blake I'm not saying the restaurant shouldn't be investigated or shut down because of it! It definitely should. I'm just saying that a few people were misunderstanding which virus they were talking about. It's a bad review for a reason, but not bad as in misplaced or unreasonable. They should definitely not go back

I left a bad review exactly one time. I needed new security cameras for outside of my apartment. I selected one that meets my needs. The ad read SIX times that it’s wireless. My previous cameras needed to be charged about every three weeks. Not a big deal. So I order three of these cameras. I didn’t mess with them because my old ones were still working, but about to drop dead. Thirty two days later, they crapped out. I opened the new cameras and they had three wires. I read the instructions and those cords were for if you wanted to run them off ethernet. However, there is also a six inch power cable. What?? How tf am I supposed to plug them in to… nothing?? I don’t have an outdoor receptacle. I would have to run hundreds of feet of extension cords to plug them in. I read the ad again and again. Absolutely no mention of this. Just wireless, wireless, wireless. The return time was 30 days. I’m stuck with them. I’ve always been happy with what I order and I’ve never left a bad review, even if it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. This one just really pissed me off.

I'm sorry your item wasn't what was described, that really sucks. I think in an ideal world we should be able to trust that what we're getting is what we've ordered. However, sadly it's not always the case between people out there who are a) outright scammers or b) who are responsible for using poor translations/miscommunications (i guess in this case wireless can mean Internet or electrical cable, they meant one and you thought it meant fully, of course they were in the wrong, but they might not even have known that)...and of course sometimes things get damaged in transit too. So, as much as it sucked I guess a learning moment too: never wait to check the contents of an order, especially don't wait until they're out of return period. Too many amazon products aren't as advertised to risk that. I've also had timess where I realised I was a few days beyond the 30 day return window & contacted customer service and explained it had been a birthday gift for someone, so I'd not wanted to ruin the box by opening it to check it over, and so it hadn't been checked until outside of the date, they actually allowed the refund and gave me an extra week to return it. So if it's an amazon sent item then it's always worth trying anyway. In fact, it might also be worth it if you are able to contact a direct seller too, because they likely don't want the negative reviews if it can be avoided (and sometimes the seller might not even be aware of the issue at hand too, they _might_ be selling in good faith having not checked either). I'm only adding this because I know much mum found herself out of a return's date on several miss-sized lclothing items after she'd been too I'll to check them for a few weeks, and when she did see them properly, she was just going to write off the money instead of contacting them, but I figured it's always worth a shot if it's only been a few days over. I once had an infuriating experience where an item wasn't as advertised and I was able to return it, however I wanted to leave a review to warn others...amazon kept rejecting my review even though there was nothing objectionable in it.

okay, there are some google apps that ask you to rate/review places it thinks you went to, and many people who aren't tech savvy do not understand that you can close that request and move on if you didn't actually go there. They think they have to leave a review to use the rest of the app. so i agree its a stupid thing for people to review places they haven't been to, i also understand why it happens

I admit I also reviewed some places I've never been to because Google just doesn't take no for an answer. It sometimes happens that I walk past some establishment and then Google just constantly demands you review it and asks you questions about it. There is a "haven't been there" option but for me that just puts the "reminders" on snooze for like two days and then it starts all over until I finally give some bullshit review.
