@rachelppython

I agree as a fellow ace. Getting married without having sex before is a personal choice, but you HAVE to discuss it before. Finances, sex, children, and other boundaries ALL need to be discussed thoroughly before making the decision to get married, and imo, before you move in with someone regardless of marriage status.

@zoeb3573
@zoeb3573 Год назад
People in purity culture environments are raised to think that 1) sex is taboo, you should never discuss it, even think about it, even consider it until it's your wedding night and you're faced with the fact you now need to do this thing and you have zero clue what's happening 2) divorce is also a huge taboo, you are to love the person you married without knowing them that well no matter what and stay with them no matter what. Your sex lives aren't compatible? Well either one of you is gonna have to take it for the team and be miserable, or you'll have to both be miserable. Bottom line: only the concept of marriage matters, everything else comes as an after-thought.
@hollyhartwick3832
@hollyhartwick3832 Год назад
I'm not ace, pretty much the opposite, but I still agree communication is vital. The more you understand each other in every way before committing the better. Fewer marriages would fail if more people took the effort to be certain they're marrying the right person. Even beyond sex, abusers would be exposed if given more time to reveal their true nature before locking in. People are less likely to commit to a mistake if they can be more certain they're not making one in the first place.

I was just about to write that similar sentiment before I saw this, lol. Yeah, like, I'm not particularly allergic to any food substances, but I have friends and family who are. I can look at a bag of chips that gives the warning that it might contain corn or cheese ingredients, something that's probably very obvious, but the fact that the words are there to announce that there's a possibility of an allergic reaction or cross contamination is still reassuring when I grab someone I care about, some snacks. A nice addition to that is that my Mom is allergic to sulfites and related preservatives ((not in a dangerous way, but a way that results in skin stuff and sore throat)), so seeing that some products are adding sulfites and such as a bolded item in the ingredients list has been helpful for me to reading the back to be sure I don't trigger that allergy. I imagine trigger warnings are the same in concept.

I had this "Women are loved unconditionally and men on the condition that they provide" argument quite a few months back... And the guy making the argument explained it by stating that women are beautiful (condition) and can have children (condition). Quite an efficient shot into his own knee. Wouldn't it be nice if we could just dislike all people equally by how much of a butt they are?
@kellyl13
@kellyl13 9 месяцев назад
I think the only beings that love unconditionally are animals, and that may only apply to domesticated animals. One interesting thing I have found about this from watching true crime shows that interview the family members of the perpetrator is that the parents are the most likely to forgive and not kick them out of their lives. It's never completely unconditional love; this is just the closest I've seen in humans. And it's not gender dependent.
@sugoish9461
@sugoish9461 9 месяцев назад
@@kellyl13 (haven't seen the video yet, but) I'd say young children also, have among the closest thing to unconditional love, towards their parents. It's pretty much hardwired in them out of a primal survival instinct. Abused kids don't start out blaming the parents for being abusive, for example, but rather blame themselves for "causing" the abuse. It takes a _lot_ of mistreatment and also age (around preteen-teens I'd say) until kids are honestly for the most part even _capable_ of thinking anything else. So I'd add that to the list as well!

For the zoo one: zoos can of course be awful, but they can also be wonderful for the animals. It all depends on the zoo. They’re very good for getting people to care about the animals (it’s one thing to see a picture of a tiger, it’s another to see a tiger playing or napping in person). They’re also great for conservation, with many zoos having breeding programs for animals that are endangered or even extinct in the wild. A lot of people seem to think of zoos as keeping animals in “cages” which isn’t accurate to most modern zoos (and ones that DO keep animals in cages full time should be shut down imo). Enclosures can be cramped, but often have enrichment for the animal, places for privacy, and other things that meet the animals’ needs. And lastly, I think it can lead to a somewhat reductionist view of nature. Yes, the wild is a big, wide open space. However, there is a reason animals tend to have longer lifespans in captivity. Animals have to be on the lookout for the next meal and any potential dangers. Weather events, human activity (habitat destruction, roads, etc) can all be incredibly dangerous. If an animal gets sick or injured in a zoo, there’s a team of zookeepers and vets whose job is to notice the ailment and treat it. Illnesses and injuries fatal in the wild can be overcome in months or even weeks. Now that’s not to say nature is evil or bad for animals, or that zoos can save every creature they keep, death is always inevitable and all those risks are a part of life for animals, I just think that a lot of people don’t really take into account the darker side of nature when talking about how bad zoos are. Obviously zoos can be bad. They can keep animals in unsafe environments, treat them poorly, abuse them, feed them improperly, fail to keep them engaged through enrichment, any of that nonsense. And obviously, that’s bad. But I think zoos as a whole do a lot more than people give them credit for. I think the housepet comparison is actually incredibly good in this regard: your home/terrarium is an enclosed space your pet (probably) can’t leave without supervision. But while pet owners can and do abuse or neglect pets, generally those animals receive safety, love, and care that helps them live good long lives. Edit: I meant to make this a comment on the general video, not a reply to your comment I’m so sorry. I… am actually not sure how I managed that.

IMO it can't exist because the issue isn't that a man or a woman is explaining something to you. The core issue is that one group which has power and is assumed to be more knowledgeable because they belong to the group tries to explain to another group that has no reason to NOT have that knowledge. It's about power and assumptions and stereotypes. Women have less power, respect, and assumption of technical knowledge on ANY subject by DEFAULT, and therefore it isn't possible to "womansplain." I absolutely DESPISE the way trigger warning discourse presents the issue, especially as someone who has a VERY unconventional trigger. Without getting into it too much, I was groomed, abused, and stalked when I was 14, and one of my triggers is a specific Gorillaz song my abuser said reminded him of me. This discourse implies that I’m inhibiting others by having this trigger, like I want to ban the song or would attack somebody for unknowingly playing it; none of this is the case at all. People are 100% allowed to listen to it, all I’d like is a quick warning so I can leave the room for a bit and let them enjoy it in peace (and not end up hurting myself or others if I end up having a severe panic attack or flashbacks). Claiming that my concern somehow isn’t real and that I should just “get some help” is a slap in the face and one of the most privileged takes I’ve heard.

Another late reply, but the whole "get some help" argument also bugs me. So many people have this idea of therapy as though it's as simple as taking your car to the mechanic. Just pop the hood, take a quick look, swap out a part, take some pills, bing bang boom done. You're cured! I've been to six different therapists and I still have so much social anxiety that I just about have a panic attack when I have to have a phone call with strangers. One therapist was trying to get me to "try praying more, because the universe gives us what we ask for if we ask hard enough" (not realizing that the last time I prayed, God still killed my dad with cancer), told me about how ice crystals react to our thoughts and emotions, incorrectly told me that my autistic stimming is what's causing my anxiety instead of being a way to physically vent it, and straight up told me I'm unfixable before ghosting me to move on to other patients. Therapy can be really good, but sometimes it can actually really suck.

(TW child abuse by parents, deceased sibling) Last night my partner told me about a time where their older brother (now deceased) was mad at them and told them that he deleted their save file in a game they had spend many many hours on, causing them to burst into tears because they were a child (and undiagnosed ADHD/autistic, the game was very important to them because it was one of their hyperfixations) and they couldn't stop crying even when he admitted he lied and the saves were fine. But their dad decided it was a good idea to yell at them for crying, which you know doesn't work, and made them cry more and more until they were grounded for 6 weeks for...crying, as a child. They said they were angry about it and went upstairs to find a pillow to punch, but when they lifted their brother's pillow they found a knife and immediately stopped crying and calmed down because they were like "you know what? My problem isn't that important. There are bigger things to worry about." (Idk what was up with the knife, they never asked their brother and he drowned a few years back. But it was probably to do with their mum being abusive due to untreated depression and anger issues, and was a defense/PTSD thing. Funny enough, their mum is now the good parent who has spent over a decade consistently getting therapy and taking meds that she never wants to stop in case she goes back to old behaviours. Their dad on the other hand is still pretty shitty. Their parents have been divorced since a couple years before the brother died. The mum put in a lot of work to change her behaviour, their dad has not. They live with their mum.)

I totally with you on the losing your virginity to the person you’re gonna marry part. It also is a big thing I take it to consideration when people tell me they wasted their time on somebody because the relationship didn’t work out. It wasn’t a waste. You were gaining experience to know what you’re willing to deal with and not only your own boundaries but what behaviours in yourself you can change to make yourself better for the person that you’re gonna be with. Everybody especially at first has behaviours in themselves that are toxic to relationships and doing those “time l wasting“ relationships help you vet that stuff out in yourself.

I once saw a comic on Tumblr where a woman was SA. In the morning she made breakfast for her attacker as a way to deal with it because making breakfast is something you do for a partner, not an attacker. But then because of that she always associated breakfast with her attack and breakfast became something triggering for her. So the point of the comic was that people have reasons for being triggered by seemingly stupid things. And my thought process on that is there is no way you can know what is and isn’t considered triggering by everyone and it would be impossible to list every possible triggering object or concept in anything. So while people should do their best to warn about any common triggering subject matter, they should also not be vilified if they happen to overlook something. That’s my thought on this.

I think a good idea is what I've seen quite a few AO3 writers do of adding something as a warning if directly asked, like if someone replies "I I got triggered by the mention of towels (random example) could you warn that please" you add that warning, while it only really works for smaller creators it's a pretty good work around from what I've seen.

Oh I've seen that comic, it is just several pages, but it is so good. It was not only about how fried eggs became a trigger for her. It was mostly about how she denied being r*ped to herself. She didn't look like a victim, she didn't behave like a victim, she almost couldn't comprehend it happened. Her mind was so frozen, she behaved like everything was fine. But the trauma was there, and after that she came a long way to deal with it. My other brother is neurotypical (at least a far as i know) but he still listens to audiobook because... i don't actually know, but it's how he experienced the Percy Jackson books, which are my childhood. All three of us watched the Disney+ series together and loved it, me and bro#2 for being book accurate while giving us scenes we never knew we needed, and bro#1 because it's a good show (PJO was one of the ones he doesn't have the attention span for). I listen to audiobooks because I'm adhd and would never make it through them otherwise (specifically lotr and les mis), or because I'm doing chores and don't want to listen to music or a podcast. Tl;dr: audiobooks are great, even if they aren't the same.

I think the only thing that REALLY frustrates me about trigger warnings is that some people take it too far and expect you to warn about things that are extremely uncommon and actually become outraged that the conversation is taking place between people, making it clear that at no point did they stop reading and absorbed everything despite being affected negatively, instead of backing out like a normal person does. They also make it extremely obvious that people often don't know the difference between annoyance and a trigger, which actually does harm people such as myself, who do suffer from getting triggered. Bonus points when it's specific words being banned while also being REQUIRED to trigger warn, I was in a DV survivors group on social media and they had banned saying words such as knife and anything you could possibly think of to describe your trauma origin, so you really couldn't talk about anything but about how you feel and not about what happened to you without severe censorship, which triggers many DV survivors because of how we have been silenced by our abusers and want to speak openly and freely. You would think that with a trigger warning, you wouldn't need to ban words because it would let people know not to read it. Needless to say, I left this group because it was doing a lot of harm even though their intentions were good, it seemed like they were trying to cater to people who weren't actually prepared for a group setting and needed 1 on 1 therapy.

Yea, it's completely irrelevant to you, because it isn't for YOU. the warnings on the label aren't for the person taking it every day, it's for other people who have no idea what's inside. In the same way, a trigger warning isn't for the person telling the story/message, it's for everyone else on the outside to have a quick way to assess if they are in the headspace to discuss a topic that may affect them personally. I can understand trigger warnings for things like flashing lights or for graphic depictions of violence against people. But they should be used more sparingly so that a warning actually means something. Some theater put a trigger warning for drug use (among other things) on a performance of Romeo and Juliet. Does drinking a fictional potion that mimics death count as drug use, especially the type of drug use that needs a trigger warning? No, I think we can save that warning for something more like Trainspotting, if you believe a drug use trigger warning is needed at all. I have sympathy for someone in the middle of recovery from drug addiction and can understand why they might want to avoid watching movies like Trainspotting, but I think reading the description is enough information for someone to base their decision on. I don't think trigger warnings are necessary for most university classes either. If you're in a university class, you should expect challenging topics to be discussed at some point for a lot of different disciplines, especially literature, art, history, psychology and so on. We should be putting equal emphasis on learning skills to cope with trauma and practicing resiliency. I think an understanding of how exposure therapy works would be a lot more helpful for people who have experienced trauma and don't want to live in fear or dread of being exposed to their trigger unexpectedly.

There's an old term in the fandom community that we have been trying to bring back in the face of people misusing the word "trigger/ing". Squick. A squick is anything that can make people uncomfortable. It's not as strong as a trigger but still something an individual would want to avoid. Trigger Warnings have existed a long time, it's only recently where people have erased the line between a squick and a trigger and have demanded that squicks are given trigger warnings on everything. And while in things like fanfiction it is very common and accepted to tag squicks due to the nature of the fanfic community and the overwhelming amount of available content they have to sort through so the tags save everyone time. But outside of that it's not a huge deal. Trigger warnings (as they are meant to be) are 100% helpful in helping people protect their mental health, but the line between them and the many squicks out there needs to be redrawn.

Squick predates trigger warnings as they're currently being used in fandom (not trigger warnings as a concept, though). Their original purpose was to replace words like "gross" or "disgusting" (which have negative connotations and carry a value judgment with them, e.g. this thing is disgusting, therefore the person who made it/the people who like it are disgusting too) with a value-neutral word. Dark/darkfic is a content warning that fills a similar niche in that it warns for content that a lot of people find upsetting and might want to avoid. I also remember squickfests being a thing, fanfiction events where people would try to write the grossest thing they could think of and a panel of judges with strong stomachs (usually the organisers) would try to determine the winner and runners-up. Good times.

Totally agree to bring that back. As someone who suffered from PTSD and got actually triggered by things, I hate it when people use the word to describe something that is making them feel uncomfortable. For me personal trigger warnings don't work, because I have sensory triggers, not something that I read about. In general most trigger warnings are directed at people who only feel uncomfortable about certain topics. I don't want to say that there aren't people who actually feel triggered, but when a written word alone triggers something then that person needs professional help. Not in a mocking way. I needed that help to get over my own triggers, but at least 99% of people who I met in psychiatric facilities suffering from PTSD had sensory triggers. And triggers are as individual as people. For me it is a certain smell, for someone else I know it is the smell, and texture of jello. No situation is like the other. Trigger warning: You experience life.

On the topic of trigger warnings, I think that it just comes down to doing your best to be kind to others. Know of a common trigger that's present in your content? Put a little warning. Have an obscure, uncommon trigger? Let those around you know, especially if you'll be around them often. Find out someone you'll interact with a lot has an uncommon trigger? Try your best to be accommodating. Nobody *has* to put a trigger warning for anything, but it's kind of a basic human decency thing. People shouldn't be upset that there are people who ask for trigger warnings, and people shouldn't attack others because a specific trigger isn't always listed. Literally just try your best. Someone having a trigger isn't something they can control. People have all kinds of triggers whether you like it or not. People also don't know everyone else's triggers, so it's impractical to expect all trigger warnings to be fully comprehensive lists of everything that could ever trigger anyone (although to be fair, i haven't really seen anyone get actually upset that trigger warnings didn't include particular obscure triggers).

Then my brother's fiancee became a zookeeper at 2 different zoos and in reality all those animals are spoiled rotten lol. My favorite was this sad looking wolf in his own fenced off area away from the pack. Turned out he was the former alpha who the pack kicked out. If he stayed with them then he'd be killed, and if he was fully moved away he'd die of loneliness. So instead he got his own little retirement home where he could see his friends but be safe. I think a lot of people also still believe that animals are ripped from the wild and dropped into cages. When in reality, zoo parks (at least the reputable ones) are more like foster homes for captive born, or sick animals that can't survive in the wild. They actually give those animals a chance at living a long, healthy life. And of course, there are still some subpar facilities out there, but I think we've made it past the era where that was the default in the world of animal care.

@@neonbat666a lot of zoos also trade animals too instead of buying them, so instead of buying them from a potentially sketchy market a zoo in California can go to a zoo in France and go hello let's trade animals of equal measure. That can seem weird to outsiders, but it can be particularly beneficial for breeding programs so that the genetic lines can be more diversified, and any offspring that may get released into the wild then can help diversify the natural population gene pool. A lot of animals can also be rescues a mentioned, be them from zoos and wildlife centres that are going bankrupt, illegally kept animals, circuses, the animals will often be taken to a zoo to be cared for and potentially rereleased! There's also materials like wool that moisture wicking. I often wear my wool shirt after drying myself with a towel. Obv. none of this should be done dripping wet, like dry yourself with your towel first but the wool shirt helps a lot because oftentimes by that point it's nice to have something on that helps me not be cold and wicks away moisture AND also by that point the wool shirt is a lot warmer and dryer than the towel.

(Also a good way to find out if your kid is intelligent enough to not blindly believe what is told to them....or not) I figured it out at around 4-5 years old, because I sat by my door listening for santa to put a stocking on my bedroom door (my mum's honestly genius solution to us waking up at 4am).... and I distinctly heard the walking pattern of my dad. The trigger opinion is weird because op seems to take issue with censorship but people putting trigger warnings on things isn't the same as not showing something out of concern for other people, it's literally just letting people know that those things are present so they can choose whether they'd like to interact with something potentially distressing for themselves. As someone who's experienced major longstanding trauma that gave me very weird and specific triggers, and spends time around other people with similar experiences, there's a courtesy of using trigger warnings around commonly triggering themes (such as sexual assault, abuse, neglect, death, detailed accounts of violence, common phobias). You do it because there is a high likelihood that someone close to you has struggled with that, whether you know it or not. Then, if you get to know someone, they might mention something more obscure or ask you not to bring up specific topics with them. You don't have to trigger warning that for everyone ever after that just in case, you just respect the boundary that's been set between you and your friend. You can't expect everyone to know about your incredibly specific trigger or expect the entire world to cater to it, it's not their problem. But you can set boundaries with people that you talk to more often and feel comfortable to do so with. Being able to set and respect boundaries is a sign of a healthy friendship.

Especially since we are currently looking at fear and violent behaviour, so we often not only look at a wide variety of fears that anyone could have, but things such as incidents of domestic violence, murders, etc. Any thing could trigger someone, even if you don’t know it. It’s very important to put warnings when describing things that are commonly triggering for people (e.g. blood, SA, abuse, etc.) and if someone tells you that something triggers them for whatever reason, keep it in mind so you can let them know before hand or simply avoid the topic when talking to them.
