Ropa vieja is a Spanish dish but it's popular in Latin America and the Philippines as well. Recipes vary considerably in these countries, but this is the Cuban version. Ropa vieja means 'old clothes' and the dish is called that because the shredded beef and peppers look like a pile of ripped old rags.

That sauce is similar to what we had last night done in the slow cooker called swiss steak. Tough cuts if beef steak in a lovely rich gravy over mashed spuds. I know that was delish 🥰😘

Looks like a great combo of meaty and fresh flavours Keef! Great stuff. It's really sad that many restaurants, in the UK at least, don't serve simple, flavourful food like that and favour food that looks good rather than tastes good. Another dish for me to try making. Thanks! 👍

Slight aside, when I was editing this I remembered there's a Cuban restaurant in Kirkstall, Leeds - so I checked their menu online - no ropa vieja at all!

Very interesting! Old Clothes or ropa Vieja here in the Canaries would be with cubed Chicken, chick peas and cubed fried potatoes on top as well as the other vegs. A very tasty meal!

I love my little pressure cooker. I can nip into Morrisons and get some ox or pig cheek and have it on the table in half an hour. Same goes for beans and lentils. I used to have a pressure cooker recipe book, I think the author was married to an Iranian fella so there was a lot of Middle Eastern stuff in there. Bizarrely, there was a cheesecake recipe for the pressure cooker in there. Never tried it because all I foresaw was a load of mess.

It's a nice simple stew. Unfortunately that cut of beef has become quite expensive in the USA -- although it was once considered a cheap cut of tough beef.

Rags to Riches here for sure with this very tasty dish Keef cooked by your own expert hands but the concept of a Spanish dish but cooked in a Cuban style is mind bogglingly deviant 😀

Popular dish in my house. Too bad it has that "old clothes" name tag; Flank steak may have a different name in England but it is the same cut of the cow and is also used here for steak Fajitas. Cut across the grain when cooked or it is tough. Also marinade well to eliminate toughness. Sorted Keef. Thanks.

Skirt steak works well also if you cant get flank steak. Have also had luck using chuck.

Yeah I think skirt would be better actually because it has collagen that breaks down into unctuousness
