@@ripewave Absolutely! They don't have as much excursion as I expected, but that's due to the efficiency of direct servo technology. I was watching the Hans Zimmer Live in Prague Blu-ray the other day and one of the tracks had my F18s going crazy. I time aligned, EQ'd and corrected phase at the crossover frequency using REW and a mini-DSP. I made a +9db house curve down to 20hz. Since my system is in an open living room/kitchen/dining room, there's over 7500 cubic feet of space to fill, so I'm wondering what it would be like with two more F18s. :)

I have a pair of these F18s. They crush it in my smaller room. I had dual SB13s before these. The 13s are also great lil subs but big boy 18s are sonic bliss.

Great choice in subwoofers 👍. I have always owned servo controlled Subwoofers. That includes velodyne, lots of velodyne, Paradigm and Martin Logan. Servo controlled subs are great for music lovers especially. I plan to try out some Rythmik audio subs.

Thanks for your experienced based feedback. Glad to hear that you have had success with servo controlled subwoofers. While may listening time may be 50/50 between music and movies my bias is to improve the musical experience first. Given your experience with top brands, it would be interesting to know how Rythmik compares.-Jon

Very interested in your findings. I’m a QA Software Engineer and I like your test driven approach to your integration. I’m personally on the fence right now with upgrading from dual SB16 Ultras and these are actually on my list along with PSA, Funk, JL, Paradigm. Happy testing!
@ripewave
@ripewave 3 года назад
Sammie - sorry for the delay - busy times. Yes, testing certainly makes the process easier and my ears are not perfect. You have a good list. I think that as long as you are aiming for the right class of sub and size for your room, you should be happy with the results. I felt that It was better to focus on the quality of the driver than to worry about on board DSP as external solutions can address. It was the servo technology at a reasonable price that made me settle on Rythmik.-Jon

@@ripewave No worries I understand the time it takes to test something like this while trying to take care of day to day things as well as just life. I have ultimately narrowed it down to PSA, Rythmik, and Funk. I'm not too concerned about the DSP as all my bass management is being handled through my Lyngdorf. My main focus is integration and a fairly smooth room response prior to bass management, as well as meaningful and usable output at lower freq.
@ripewave
@ripewave 3 года назад
@@sammie_prescott yes - with RoomPerfert in your setup, the bass management would be better to leave to the processor. Furthermore, I understand that SVS doesn’t handle multi-subs yet with their onboard solution.-Jon

Chris -the F18s dig deep enough for me not to worry above what extra experience Theo ported models would deliver. Also, the sealed versions are smaller at the same driver size. -Jon

Hey, I know your comment is about a year old but I just found it this video and I agree with you. I don’t like port noise in the extra lingering bass frequencies like the sealed subs better they’re accurate they’re powerful and they’re precise I like that.
@thomsshea
@thomsshea 3 года назад
wow those look amazing! i definitely support the larger woofers selection...imo it just makes those ultra low frequencies so much more attainable. I have two 10 inch martin logan subs that are older now - they sound great and play "low enough", but I know they are not capable of hitting any ultra low with authority or volume. If I replace them I would go at least 15 inch, but would prefer 18. I recommend Tenet or Dunkirk for a couple bass heavy movies.
@ripewave
@ripewave 3 года назад
Thomas- are your Martin Logan subs also servo controlled? My feeling if a sub can extend down to 10 Hz it will execute 20Hz without trying hard. Thanks for the demo suggestions- I will have try those out.-Jon
@thomsshea
@thomsshea 3 года назад
@@ripewave not servo. they are rated down to 25. large diameter servo controlled like what you have with those two 18 inchers is definitely the way to go. i feel like i have decent bass with my two 10, but it won’t be epic in the ultra low frequencies like with two 15 or 18 inch subs.
@ripewave

Even without proper placement and tuning via measurements the experience is stunning!
@thomsshea
@thomsshea 3 года назад
@@ripewave my thought is when you have large diameter drivers there is more flexibility in placement, because they have an easier time creating the pressure in room, which gives more over head.

Very nice subwoofers And they look very nice as well . both of those big boys are really large. you got to have a nice size room to accommodate those big suckers. and I know the name of the subs probably encourage you to bio F 18 sounds like a fighter jet. For me, I went with the svs the best subwoofers I have ever heard when it comes to slam punch, kick you in the gut Enjoy your subwoofers take care

Do a thorough test with spectrum lab with multiplex microphones with the proper theatrical mix top gun (as the later dvd blu and 4k are botched versions that don't have the theatrical mix) use the out of print region 1 dvd and test the scene where the f-14 afterburners are shut down after they ascend and then the plane goes into flat-spin and the engines shutting-down. Do it like as if it was the chinese theatre playing it in Format 43 in THX sound system and fit them into a baffle wall with matched LCR at the correct spacing height behind a transparent screen, think you can do all that?

Do you recommend F18 primary usage for HT or ported sub FVX15HP.
@ripewave
@ripewave 2 года назад
Rajhumar, The F18 has no program filling the room with very low frequencies. For my basement setup (concrete foundation and all) it can still make thing rattle if you want. The active servo drive is dynamic. I do not long for anything more.-Jon

I’m thinking of getting rythmik f18 or fv18 I’m trying to decide between them and see which one best for music and home theater
@ripewave
@ripewave Год назад
Some say the ported subs, like the FV18, are best for movies and the sealed subs, are the best for music. I am perfectly happy with the sealed F18 for both. Keep in mind that i am more passionate about music. Albeit the F18 still shake the house during a moving - I get complaints for upstairs. I believe their servo design makes the sealed version as good or better than most ported subs for movies. If you favor movies and have more space go with the FV18 - otherwise, I don’t think the F18s will disappoint - especially with two or more.

Any thoughts on the G22 vs F18? Did you check that out? G22 dual drivers gives approx comparible to 18" driver output , but in a smaller box.
@ripewave
@ripewave Год назад
The G22 is a dual opposing 12" driver design vs. the F18 which is a single 18" driver. I suspect the G22 can output with similar performance. However, I would only consider the G22 as a cost and space saving measure. If you can afford the cost and have the room, you are better with two F18s as it will more evenly balance the bass in the room. If the cost is an issue, I would consider two of their lower cost models vs. one with two drivers. -Jon

@@ripewave I think you read my mind, definitely going to the f-18s after thinking the last few weeks. It's a great value proposition if you can manage the size, which is still much better than a ported design sub which is huge

Great video! Debating between these F18s or the SVS SB16 Ultras. I have owned the Rythmik F12s for years and they are great but wanted more output for home theater use. The direct servo technology seems like a great advantage over the SVS and also is more efficient in terms of power usage. Did you consider the SB16s in your research?
@ripewave
@ripewave 3 года назад
I did consider the SVS SB16s as well as models from Hsu Research, REL, and JTR etc.. It was the direct servo that sold me along with measurements from DataBass and positive reviews by almost all. The SVS SB16s are similarly priced around $2,000 but are smaller, not servo controlled and don’t have as impressive measurements. While SVS has a built in DSP it is not networkable for optimizing multiple subs. So unless you only purchase one, you may end up managing your bass externally.-Jon

@@ripewave Thanks for taking the time to create the videos of your setup and for your reply. I am testing out a pair of FV15HP ported subs right now. Still on the fence about them as I feel I am missing a bit of that sealed transient punch I would get from the little F12s. Not sure if that is because they are sealed or because the smaller driver really focusses around the mid sub bass range creating more impact. The F18s look like a great option to try in comparison.

@@ripewave i should probably do that too, but i was kind of hoping when i get my new processor, it will have the ability to tune both subs separately. in the mean time i just used a db meter and my ear to calibrate and it sound decent. I am still torn on my pre pro decision…techno dad is getting the top end audio control unit, so i am going to be excited to see his detailed review of that product. with out that i am still torn between the mx100, mx123 and the avm70 or avm90. the smart money is probably avm70.
