I was just explaining safety squints to a safety man at work today. What a coincidence! I'm really surprised considering his level of education he had never heard of them. What are they even teaching in school today?!
I learned the hard way why safety glasses are required. Only got 62% vision in my left eye from a little piece of wood getting flung in my cornea from a wood chipper.

HVAC tech I knew went to schooling with a guy who lost an eye, all because he was screwing in one of those 1/2" duct screws above him and a piece of metal landed in it
@@Loopy25 Thats incredibly unlucky and sad to hear, damn. My vision is bad enough without shit literally ripping into my eyes. My right eye is my good eye, if something happens to it… I’d be SOL for a lot of things. I can see out of my left eye, not well, but its incredibly weak, and I’d be unable to enjoy a lot of things, even reading would be an incredibly slow and taxing task, almost impossible unless letters were huge. Its a legit fear I have.

Tell Ricky he can save himself money if he wears his safety gear, that oughta do it. Once had to do some cutting/grinding metal, thought I could get away with just wearing my regular glasses, right? Nope. Had to trash 'em and get a new pair because they were scratched all ta hell (due for a new prescription anyway).
I have used my normal prescription glasses for almost an entire decade straight at this point. I have gotten three pair. You are an actual mongoloid if you sprayed enough grinder dust in your face to trash a pair of glasses in one sitting. You are the reason for safety crews and for that I actually hate you.
As a welder, I use a face shield and safety glasses when grinding. I've had a grinding rock come apart on me and destroyed the shield. Imagine if I only had on glasses
Saftey Squints. Way more dangerious. If you had any clue how many people I have personally driven to the hospital with a dang peice of metal in thier eye you wouldnt even ask. Just me, one person is enough to throw on a pair of glasses, and just stop and clean em if they fog up. Ricky needs to get some glasses that fit, and not goggles though.

I've seen angle grinding and cutting disks explode... I've seen 1 bench grinding wheel explode. Buddy had a metal cutting disk imbed into his arm. I drove him to the hospital. He didn't bleed too much, maybe because it was hot when it went in? 🤔 I always wear a face shield and safety glasses when working with anything bigger than a Dremel. Position yourself out of the debris field if you can. Especially with bench grinders. Don't stand directly in front of it.
I use a full face shield/ safety glasses, had a couple of cut wheels explode and bolts fall directly into my face. Not to mention several other instances using a high pressure washer. USE YOUR PPE
Glad i was the boss. When i ran my own lawn care company, I'd make my employees wear their safety glass. They would always say something a long the lines of, well you don't wear them, or it's not fair i don't wear them and we have to. I always told them to feel free to look elsewhere or start your own company. Of course i never did get seriously injured, but i sure did come close a few times. Thank God for the safety sqint. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
To any electricians out there. I’ve had a piece of metal fling into my eye, while cutting a piece of conduit with my bandsaw. Shit is random and it will get you at some point
how can they be safe if they fog up and obstruct your vision? Literally the only injury I've ever seen "stopped" by safety glasses, was caused by the safety glasses fogging up. Caused a kid in welding class to miss the piece of hot metal he was hammering and hit the Anvil full force, which rebounded the hammer immediately into his eye. Safety glasses stopped him from losing the eye, sure, but they also caused him to get smacked in the face with a hammer.
I want to know what's more dangerous: Me carefully using a grinder I can see very well in short periods using extreme caution, or me blindly waving around a grinder trying to peer through fogged-up glasses. I use my eyes off the clock, boss. Don't assume I don't wanna keep them :p In all seriousness you should always use the provided or better safety equipment. Your co-worker doesn't need to scoop what's left of your eye back into the socket.
I remember when i was 18 or so, I was grinding some piece of metal, and a shaving landed at the very edge of my eyelid almost touching my eyeball. Ever since then, I always wore safety glasses
I mean...I agree with Ricky. Always fogging up or getting sweat splashes on em, even the damn anti fog ones don't do the anti fog part very well so they suck too.
I’ve got a good friend who isn’t very good at wearing his glasses…I think he’s had to go to the optometrist like 6 times to get stuff pulled out of his eyes & steroids…think the last time he was in there the optometrist actually offered to buy him a nice pair of like Oakley safety glasses and he turned him down 😂 Admittedly, I rarely wear my safety glasses, unless I’m welding or chipping slag, usually if I’m grinding I just make sure my face isn’t in the line of fire…it’s worked pretty good for me, I’ve only gotten metal in my eye 1 time and I don’t believe it was from grinding, and it washed out (did really suck until it washed out though, I probably wear them more often after that.)
I got pulled into a meeting with the boss and the safety man the other day for not wearing PPE while using a grinder. Safety man saw me from like 20 feet away and could see that I didn't have glasses on. Well when I walked in, I put my hard hat on the desk. Boss just grabs his head, he knows how this is gonna go. I asked 'so was I wearing a hard hat when you saw me?' He said 'yea, but that's it. No eye or hearing protection. That's not up to the standard for this job site, and you should know better.' Now fun fact, my hard hat has an integrated visor and bluetooth earmuffs. I paid extra for that because I hate those crappy safety glasses they provide. So he's on a rant, my boss picks up the hard hat, hands it to him and says 'I'd stop now if I were you'. Dumbass starts to go off on the boss...then looks at what he's holding. Got me a paid day off for his stupidity.
One time my dad was chainsawing and I made him wear my lab goggles. 2 minutes later, he walked back over to me with a wood chip sticking out of my goggles and told me he'd buy me new ones
I have said this same shit. Did it fer the better part of ten years, 5 days a week. Watch where the sparks go the rest tends to go that way aswell. However near the end I started wearing glasses to see(my eyes are shit) and got shatter resistant fer that reason. However when you make yer living from skills that you need to see to use you may probably should, most jobs provide them free. In short if you are old enough to go die fer yer country you yer old enough to choose to not be blind.
I just watched a Saftey guy today get fired for poking a worker in the eyes for not wearing Saftey glasses. Lmao. Then ole boy pressed charges. Had the police an everything up in HR. This little clip got me rolling 😂😂
You know Ricky, failure to wear your safety glasses leads to poor quality beer choices, and instead of tipping that stripper $1, you accidently drop a $10, or even $100 because you can't see right anymore. Safety glasses saves money and beer, just sayin'
Im an electrician. Have seen many things blow up from "COWBOY ELECTRICIANS" that do "CAN'T SEE IT FROM MY HOUSE" kind of electric and yes i have had metal surgically extracted from my eye from not wearing them and Thankfully i still have full vision. An old man told me long ago in my younger years to wear them because "You can walk on wooden leg, but you cant see out of a glass eye" i didnt listen to him until i was on the surgical table wondering if i would be able to work. Wear your glasses. If you think they look stupid then take some beer money and go buy some cool ones.
I do them same safety squints. And the last time that I had to put on some safety glasses to do some grinding in particular, was the last time I got a piece of metal stuck in my eyeball for about a week, before it fell out after rusting. Damn near as soon as I put them on.
Well, I have astigmatism. So I HAVE to wear safety glasses, since they have prescription lenses. It's pretty convenient, actually; safety doesn't even acknowledge me half the time.

Been cutting and grinding 25 years and never had a wheel split or explode. If that happens then you're either doing it wrong or using a defective disk, which is something you should check beforehand.
Bud... It aint just the grinding wheel your worried about. Its the little chunk of metal flying off, its the dirt and grinding dust slowly abrading at your eyes making your vision worse... And most importantly Its that damn idiot using your tools when your in the crapper, rushed, and just flat out miss the chuck he gouged out of it. Never under-estimate a humans stupudity, your own, my own included. We be stuuuuuupid.
When you don’t wear your PPE, you’re more cautious when you work. When you always wear your glasses, you become complacent, and more likely to get something in your eye
Our CEO did the safety squint when he did a home project and told us about it at a company wide assembly how that was stupid considering we have strict safety measures at work. We aren't particular small either. Safety glasses are nice, some variants have vents which when you are walking directs the air along the inside of the glasses and within 10 seconds of walking the fog is no more. Heavy lifting work close to industrial ovens 700C or 1200F at least.
Safety people at my place have been eating crayons. I plan to ask them what their favorite flavor is at the townhall meeting this month. Can't sweep the warehouse even if it's completely empty because something might spawn into existence and fall on you. Where I work we are being led by the real life incarnation of Homer Simpsons or Ralph Wiggum. They are all so S.M.R.T.
As opposed to what tho? You think you can do a better job as a Safety Man? Most job sites won't let you clean up after a certain time, especially alone in an empty warehouse or something. Seems to me, you just hate being safe.

I shit you not, watched this yesterday morning, laughed, then about 5 hours later 'quickly' needed to clean up a weld with a flap disc on the grinder, so did not walk the 2 meters to go and get my safety glasses....... I have a session with a eye doctor in an hour and a half to get my eye looked at. DOH
I normally wouldn’t argue with Ricky. But yeah this is even a stretch for me. Wear your glasses. A lot of the other safety rules are made to cover the lowest common denominator type folks.
Yea definitely always wear safety glasses I've seen alot of bad shit happen to people over the years myself included im very lucky though I can still see just fine but others werent so lucky also another tip if you are using a cutting torch always wear some super thick leather wielding gloves I've watched guys completely fry their hand in just a second because they didn't have gloves on also not something you want to happen to you

I've definitely always been against the safety glasses especially when it's hot because I always drove a forklift and they always fog up so makes it hard to see so always just resting them on top of my head 😂
