Sailing to forgotten island on Myanmar boarder
We sailed our live aboard catamaran north, up the Andaman coast, to Thailands best kept secret...Koh Phayam, right up on the boarder with Myanmar (Burma).
It's just what we needed after the chaotic pace of Phuket. Koh Phayam is like stepping back in time to how Thailand used to be before tourism took hold. Off course first we had to get there and that was anything but the laid back sail we had hoped for. Strong winds and crab pots galore and some broken crockery made this a sailing trip to remember. That's boat life for you.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob rowed a tiny 7m (22 foot) plywood boat 2,500 miles from Tenerife (Canary Islands) to Barbados (Caribbean). It took six weeks for Rob and rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, to complete winning the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and his wife Rachel purchased Javelot, a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, We set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know their boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn (then 13), Declan (then 11) and Ivan (then 8), in tow. Through trial and error we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
The plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we hope to retrace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

The cashew apple was my favorite when we were little. The tree was our sanctuary being kids or our tropical residence where we reside after school. The swings, the tree house, the playground and the fruit the tree provides, we were content. Yes the fruit taste a little fruity, juicy and vegetal.

Patong was never for me, (or you apparently) . It was on this island that my scooter slipped on a banana leaf and deposited me on the road. Al La Declan & Ivan style. @@TheCruisingKiwis I live in Ceará, a state in Brazil responsible for 56% of the national production. I grew up appreciating the fruit. It's amazing what you can do with it. A few years ago there was a restaurant that belonged to a producer in the state who wanted to show the variety of meal items that could be made with the fruit. The juice, of course, the nuts (they're special when roasted)! They even served fries, rice and burgers made with the meat. The strong taste when eating it raw is appreciated by some, but not by everyone.

The sad part of the island are they dont have a proper rubbish disposal system. Most of the resort or individual practice open burning. Whatever you throw will ends up been burnt. On a low season you will see many single used plastic washed out on the beach on the west coast part that comes from different country. During low season most of the resort owner not really bother to do the clean up. When comes to the high season their staff or even the owner will take time to picking up all the plastics that been washed out. Also this is the island if westerner want to get closer to the local. Smile wave and do the Thai do, both palms meet and say sawadeekrap/ka when u meet the local. The villagers are very friendly & warm. Get to know them not only just visiting and do the typical tourist thing. You cant get this island local vibe anymore in Thai. Most of the islnds in Thai are heavily flooded by western tourist. Most of the villagers earn their living as a rubber tapper or processing cashew nuts. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thank you for your message. Yes it is a problem in every remote location, dealing with plastic is a major headache. The locals were absolutely wonderful. Such a nice time and hoping to get back there.

Anyone interested in helping move my new(to me) 50' catamaran out of St Augustine, Florida area? I have to move it by June 1st because the dockage runs out. Want to get it up to Maine eventually but if anyone out there interested, even a leg of the trip...let me know. Any Kiwis fans free for a couple weeks? Anyone? No experience needed.

Guilty as charged. When in Rome.....It seems in Phayam they didn't find helmets a necessity as no one wears one, not great for sure. If you watched the vlog where we discussed the virtues of smoking weed, my concern is we carry a family gene that sent one of my siblings doo-lally after smoking pot at university. They are free to give it a go when they have a fully developed brain....let's say in their 50's
