So they literally put the Horn of Winter in the show, which could allegedly bring down the Wall (instead of a certain undead dragon), and then just ignored it entirely lol.
They're good at doing that. They left out something that was in the first scene of Game of Thrones and thought people wouldn't notice. D&D fucked up Game of Thrones.
I feel like it's better to watch GoT first then read the books so you won't be disappointed by the awesome stuff left out due to costs and other reasons
As a TV-series-fan who's only read the first book, I'm gonna take you at your word. Book-readers have gone on at length about the superiority of Stannis and Dorne's respective storylines in thr novels, and I was disappointed to learn that Baby Aegon (Young Griff), Rhaegar's son with Elia, is well and truly dead in the TV show. I concur that it'll be more satisfying to read the books after I've finished the show👍
I started reading the books when season 4 came out, after I finished them I was impressed with how well the first 4 seasons adapted the first 3 books for the most part, some aspects of book 2 I liked more than season 2 (Dany's story, Theon's and Bran's). But when it came to season 5 the fact that I'd read them only served to make me hate that season even more because of all the things they left out and all the things they did a piss poor job of adapting like Dorne (absolute shit in the show), Arya's storyline, Tyrion's, as well as stuff they changed for the worse. Probably best you wait until the show is over, I tell you now though recent seasons haven't been adaptations so much as fan fiction that's more equivalent to a different story entirely.
Same. The budget will be diminished also, it's certain because they won't have the success GoT have, so I don't see how they will put all this magic in the series considering there is already not much magic in Game of Thrones for this reason, compared to the books which show much more of it.
LagiNaLangAko23 yea was scrapped since the pilot wasn’t cutting it for HBO, but they are coming out with House of Dragons I believe based on Aegon the conqueror and his sisters and GRRM is a producer on it thank god
@@angelamejia-loggia7331 So they are going to create a series around a character who is famous for two things: Conquering westeros, and marrying his sisters :) That'll get the social media going.
@@maximelover3314 So, around a woman who is in a marriage with a man with her sisters? Your revelation makes it more interesting, MAYBE, but it doesn't change the heart of what I was saying.
Honestly I'm extremely annoyed they left out Patchface. He is very mysterious in that he basically predicts events such as the Red Wedding in his songs and even Melisandre is terrified of him. Their attempt to replace his entire character with a song by Shireen was pathetic.
@@zander1011011 the guy was lost at sea for 3 days, driven insane by what he saw(possibly the Drowned God who is based on Dagon of the Lovecraftian mythos) and has prophetic visions of some sort. A 400 year old witch with magic powers is frightened of him... how is that not interesting?
Stefan Filipovits some of the scenes would have been too difficult and too expensive to put on screen. However, they could have added the most important bits. For all the talk about the three heads of the dragon and their three riders and the PTWP, no one (except Melisandre, and she was talking about Azor Ahai) ever mentions them. Yet the show acts like those prophecies are valid and still stand, and expect everyone to know about them. Like I get book readers knowing, but your average show watcher? Some of them didn't even realize Rhaegar was Jon's father after it was revealed, even though people REPEATEDLY hinted at this on the show.
I feel the same, but a lot of it would've given away to much, I think. Maybe not, but when I read the books, I caught on quick about rob's death. To be fair, I saw the red wedding first, but when I read that part, felt it was too obvious to be put in the show. A lot of the other parts, though, I wish they included, like the part with the undying.
I think it'll be interesting to see in 10-20 years we get a remake of Game of Thrones, but more book accurate like FMA:Brotherhood. With a closer adaptation and more magic since CGI will be much easier and cheaper. Haha we will all be comparing the shows and books and having fun deciding which is our favorite adaptation.
@@mrDjuroman I agree for the most part. Not saying I think they should, just that I bet they will lol Hollywood loves to remake and retread... Honestly though, I wouldn't mind a longer version with more history, and more magic, and supernatural stuff. I really really wanna see Robert's rebellion and some of Danys crazier adventures, not to mention some of the cool visions and stuff left out like Jaimes dream, and Aryas warg dreams. Who knows, maybe a remake could be good. But I'm pretty happy with what we got, especially since the casting was amazing and the actors did really well for the most part. I love Mark Addy but I can't see him ever being a big badass lol but he's PERFECT for lazy asshole Robert haha also I don't think anyone could do better than Dinklage or Lena Heady... But if they made it into an animated show.... hell yes. That would be perfect.
@@DanteYewToob If it's already too much of an undertaking now. So, expecting an "expanded" version 20 years from now isn't very likely. Especially since people's attention spans will likely not have improved. I could see them expanding certain portions of the story and adapting that. And of course there are plenty more tales in then ASOIAF universe. But another entire adaptation of all the books is very, very unlikely.
@@eatass1332 When reading it, I know it could still point to R+L=J, but I also thought it alluded to the theories I've seen that Dany is their child. Rhaegar's staring right at her when he says the dragon has three heads.
Yamchachacha I think Rhaegar was telling Dany there’s two more Targaryens out there. So I think its Aegon and someone else we haven’t been introduced to.
@@maxfieldpainter5626 POV of Davos, basically Stannis and his council were talking about what to do and Axell Florent said that they could pillage their former bannermen who bent the knee to Lannisters after Blackwater (Velaryons, Celtigars, Bar Emmons etc.) and that they could get some valuable artifacts. He mentioned the horn that could sommon krakens, as well as Valyrian steel axe and other things. I think it's somewhere near the end of ASoS.
The brindledmen in the arenas of Meereen, the magicians in Qarth, "dead things in the water", the Ghost of High Heart, ghosts in general are mentioned in the books, the Shrouded Lord, the ibbenese whalers, Dawn milk-like colored blade, etc etc.
Ghosts are never confirmed in the books though, it’s hard to determine since his world is so realistic yet has magic and dragons. But I believe ghosts are more superstition in the books than fact, crazy magic is usually at least confirmed
I really don't like how often you read articles like "Game of thrones is fantasy without magic" or stuff like that the reality is the books are full of magic the entire point is how Magic is returning to the world now unlike LOTR it's more that people or things are magic instead of the world but there is still plenty of magic
Assassin Cactus I started watching LoTR lore videos on RU-vid. Wow! What an amazing world Tolkien created. But I'm not a fan of Tolkiens approach of wanting to feverishly destroy magic from his world. "The war ends and the dwarves regain their land.... Yeah but I'll kill them all off regardless. Oh those 1000s of magical unknown beasts and ancient monsters that not even gandalf knows about.... They all die too". It's hard to get sucked into a fantasy realm where the fantasy dies out. GOT on the other hand. Magic is coming back whether you like it or not. Not sure what the end result will be of the world after the white walkers are done with it though. But at least you can build off a world and make prequels and sequels
@@crushingit5128 , I see Tolkien's books as more of parallel of our earth. So the age of men as basically men taking over Middle earth (And earth) and bringing it to the modern age and in the process destroying everything magical and fantasy. If you read "The hobbit" He will talk of it as if it were our world. (Explaining the origins of Golf for example. That is why the end of LOTR is so sad. It's basically the end of an Era. Elves and all things Magical will disappear and the Age of Men begins.
@@edrianluyt8735 no I see the comparison. People often say that middle Earth will then later me called England and draw comparison to King Arthur. I think Tolkien was just ahead of his time and had no idea what he just created with these stories.
@@crushingit5128 Tolkien was writing a mythology set in the distant past of our own world, so he had to explain why we don't see Dwarves, Elves, and dragons all over the place like they did in the time of the stories. Westeros is not supposed to be on our world so it can be whatever Martin wants it to be.
this is awesome! as I guy with dyslexia I find reading books very hard in the long run, So grateful to have you telling some of the more off topics stuffs! Keep it going mate =)
I think benjen must be carrying a glass candle in his lantern in seasons 6&7. One of the benefits of lighting obsidian is that the flame never flickers and can be used even around the Others (whom bring the storm.) Benjen was not only close to the white walkers but he swings that thing around pretty fiercely without the flame dying.
Great topic. I noticed that the showed tampered down the magical elements too, and I don’t think it’s all budget-related. I think Dave and Dan also have more limited screen time as is the case with most books that are made into movies, and had to make choices about what is critical to tell this story. For this reason, I like the fact that the books go as far as our imagination can carry us, but the show is focused less on reality. Jon/Aegon is probably more relatable and likable without his warging powers. Jon still has a special connection with Ghost and even Drogon, but the TV show doesn’t go as far as to set him apart as a leader simply because of magic. Jon’s moral character seems to be the real quality that sets him apart as a leader, and that quality seems to drive the storyline
Well Jon did come back to life. so by season 7 hes pretty much set apart and most of the wildlings it seems think of him like a god now. Tormund was joking that he doesn't but the rest do. It was pretty late though so i get what you mean.
I know I'm late, but the unicorns in the books are goats with one horn, but horses with one horn. Still amazing, but they weren't seen in the books either, it's just known that they live on Skagos (where Rickon is in the books) and that the people that live there ride them.
I think all the abandoned story lines in the show aggravated me more than anything. I understand that creating a TV show with so much source material is probably extremely difficult. That being said, they could have created an outline ahead of time with key points that they wanted/needed to cover.. They could have broken this entire series down into much smaller stories, and then expanded on them in later shows (prequels, sequels, etc etc). Also, GoT should have had at minimum 3 more seasons. I feel like they were just tired of the project and wanted out. They didn't earn a lot of moments in that finale. Such a good show in the beginning. On a side note, GRRM needs to focus on the remaining books. There's no reason TWoW shouldn't already be completed. The show suffered when the showrunners did their own thing.
I mean expanding the world of asoiaf could help the future books by giving more lore like everything about the prince that was promised and stuff like that which could setup and hype up future events in the mainline books
The sketch narration in the DVDs is good enough for any fan - you can sketch and narrate everything the author's mind can think of - and that's good enough for me.
The glass candles remind me of the palantiri in Tolkien's legendarium. They are black orbs that when used work like the candles, without dreams. There were seven in middle - earth, now only one remains.
I always thought there should be more magic. I wished they would have put more of Daeny's visions in the show. I hope they do some closure on Quaithe, having that one scene is pretty ridicules if that is all they do in the show. But its a long shot. Thanks for the post
After reading the first two books just recently I really wish that the show would of had a higher budget for the first few seasons to give us these awesome scenes
Lightbringer is also obviously referencing the creation of dragons, not the creation of a sword. The myth got misinterpreted over the thousands of years. Azor Ahai would be the first dragon rider.
I thought one had to be a brother of the Night's Watch or with one AND recite the vows in order to be able to pass the Black Gate. It's due to the magic in the wall where it won't let one pass unless they are a brother as well as knowing the vows. Otherwise anyone could pass. Mance Rayder was once a brother, surely he knows the vows and could tell all the wildlings and they'd be able to pass the wall without any attack on Castle Black.
Shade of the evening is probably made from Yronwood, the opposite of Weirwood. Black wood blue leaves and sap. And it does the same thing as the weirwod paste, changing flavors and opening the person's psychic potential.
Honestly I know animation isn’t easy but I feel like it would’ve been better for the Show if that was the format it was in, not only would we maybe get these moments but we would also maybe get internal character monologues (which play a big part for character like Jon Snow)
The Red Woman’s illusion with Mance Rayder is a huge one. Spoiler alert: Mance Rayder (it’s been a while, if I’m misspelling names here) isn’t killed by Stannis. Melisandre uses illusion magic to make Rattleshirt appear as Mance, so Stannis kills Rattleshirt, not Mance. Mance actually goes and sneaks into Winterfell as a bard (which he uses to be), with a few wildling women, where there are a ton of people plotting to kill Ramsey and feed them Frey pies.
I know right ! What I don't get is decades later you want to hatch dragons but you exile the only wizard you have who was loyal to your family for years plus aided in taken down the family that opposed you yet he is exiled and more wars from said family you defended happen. Aegon the fifth good man stupid king in the places it mattered
Bloodraven was a terrible hand of the king tbh. He would’ve been a better spymaster. He’s mostly the reason the blackfyres had so much support in the first place.
@@aegonii8471 people liked the blackfyres from the start. Their love for the blackfyres stems from daemon blackfyre, not from bloodraven being a bad Hand. He destroyed so many blackfyre plots and killed pretenders who wouldve threatened the targaryens, thereby keeping the targs on the throne. He got everything he wanted,so he defo wasnt a bad Hand
Dudeeeeeeeee i feel like an idiot because i thought that im a hardcore fan of GoT lol. After watching like 10videos of your fine work i need to fulfilled the gap u make. Keep it up
I read the books like 4 years ago and it was in my native language. I missed some of these as i didn't read close enough. That is why i am reading them again but in english. It is far better, even if it is a somewhat hard read.
Thanks for making this video! It had been a while since I read the books, so now all I can really imagine are the tv shows. I forgot about some of this stuff XD
If you've never seen it you should compare the kindly mans face to bloodravens weirwood face. They both have worms ("wooden worm") coming out the eye, and some more 1 to 1 comparisons. Its interesting making the connection to 2 underground, almost temple like, places that have skulls and faces lining the interior
I wish we kept in the dragonbinder horn. I wish the black gate was there(compared to, you know, the totally open hole that anyone could go through, lol!) I wish we had Marywyn and Quaithe's propecies. I wish we had the Kindly Man instead of Jaqen and I wish we hadn't got that half assed house of the undying scene. The Kindly Man's skull face wouldn't be that hard to do, considering their effects for Hardhome the same season.
you can't have "too much magic" in a world with animals that breathe fire, magic zombie masters, and where every living thing can magically breed with humans
Not everything could breed with humans, the brindle men of Sothoryos couldn’t and though the people of Ibb could their children were usually sterile. And if you’re referring to the rumors of the old Valyrians breeding their slaves with firewyrms and such, well those are rumors that best stay buried and the actual truth of the matter never sees the day of light. For everybody’s sanity
@@hnys7976 seasons 5 through 8 are all a shitshow. the show was good for the first 4 seasons, in some ways even better than the books, but in most ways not as good.

@@CooperDianeBob No it was Melisandre. The wall has magic built into, it how it still stands and why the white walkers can't go through it. Melisandre used the magic from the wall to cast a spell that set the eagle on fire.
11:39- We might get the ice spiders given how much they've been hinting at them or they might be exaggerated descriptions of the vehicles that the Night Walkers ride on. Either is plausible.
Hmm. I've been binging your videos and it seems like GoT is a watered down version of ASOIAF... Which is pretty lame seeing as how they could've slowed the pace of the show down, included a lot more content from the novels and given GRRM more time to finish the series. Instead we got the rush job that is season 7
I haven't seen the series except for youtube videos. haven't read the books at all. but this one video makes the show seem so small and insignificant. although you can only do some much in a live action show with all the magic, beasts, and money.
So much was left out or dropped in the show. Its so frustrating. The prequel was dropped I seriously doubt any more shows are going to happen do to how the last season bombed.
I wish they had not left out Patchface bc I think his character adds a lot of depth to the story, with his prophecies etc. He's essentially a prophet of drowned god, a kid who died and was brought back to life. However I am ok with HBO leaving out most of the weirwood scenes. That half-corpse half-tree stuff is super gruesome and is ok to read in books but imo it'd be out-of-place in the TV show. tbh I think it feels out-of-place in the books too. The warg stuff is cool though and I really wish that more wargs and different types of animals would've been in the show. That doesn't even require expensive special effects!
In the books J'quen hagar is in the citadel. he kills a guy in the prolouge, and we see the guy later in the sam marwyn chapter. the dead guy that is. like someone has his face.
I feel like a few of the things you mentioned that they left out are things I didn’t know were in the books but have strong resemblance to lord of the Rings. ( a magic door that requires reciting something to open it) (the glass candles and the stones from lotr work very similarly) they probably didn’t want to make it too similar to lotr
What about Mermaids and Mermen for that matter? you really can't have one without the other the Mermen would be the Warriors of the Oceans, perhaps they ride the giant sea turtle and the Mermaids lure unsuspecting land mammals, such as human men, to their Doom, but I guess that's in Ulysses.
