SECOND STORY DECK on a CAMPER?? What?! Crawler Hauler/Bugout Camper Build

As far as I know this is the first purpose built second story deck, built on a camper. If there has been before I'm sure people will point it out in the comments. Here I build a upper deck that doubles as a ridged awning for the back of my camper build. This way it helps protect the Jeep while in transport but also gives me so cover from the elements while cooking, working or just hanging out with friends!

You might want to put that ladder on passenger side of trailer. Just in case you need to make any additional time downs on the road. Last place you want to do is climb on traffic side. My thoughts.

Ill mention it again. Put the top 2 solar panels on the left side on hinges that you can move them from the vertical position to the horizontal for when you're parked. Also maybe look at an awning on each side of the new deck? Little 2x2 LED pod lights, 2 or 3 on each post, on movable mounts. That way when you break the Jeep, you have a lot of little pods that you can aim in all sorts of direction for better light when working on the Jeep. Loving the build!

Most likely, that decking isn't particularly light by any means. A local concrete contractor has a fleet of double decker trailers that he works the pi** out of and he has his uprights gussetted big time, either a repair or original don't know. I like the concept, better then hauling a trailer twice as long!

I have a converted school bus (to an RV), and in the "Skoolie" community a lot of people put decks on the roof. One thing I see a lot of people do is fabricate hand rails that hinge up and snap into place when you are using the deck, and hinge down and sit flush when you are on the road. just an FYI, if you ever decide to upgrade in the future.

For your upper deck fab some railings that fold down for transport and fold up when your up there. Safari rack for above the camper section for additional storage, lights, and antennas. Also would recommend some outriggers for when your setup and stationary. This will help stabilize the tailor and keep it from rocking especially when using the upper deck portions. For off road use, you can setup the axels for bigger tires, and suspension articulation when using the tailor on the trails. Awesome setup.

Very buslife (skoolie) addition! Love it. You may need to replace the underlayer plywood after a few years if there ends up being standing water for any length of time. or just leave it slightly tilted down at the rear to shed water when not in use.

I made sure to get ground rated pressure treated plywood for the decking so it should last awhile. With it being a trailer it will never be perfectly level so it should keep the standing water to a minimum.

If you get a clear 2 liter bottle, then cut the large side of it off and then take a section out of the side, then cut the top off just below where the threads are, you can create a wind shield. Stick the end of your welder in the smaller end and then the big end goes over what you're working on. Then you can weld and it will give a little protection from the wind. It helps and best part is its free. Just throw it away when finished. Having a person help you hold a wind break is great, but when you don't have a second set of hands, this works well. Cool project! I have a 36ft sundowner all aluminum gooseneck crawler hauler and love it! It's 36ft so it's 16ft of camper w/ the riser section that goes over the bed with a 16+4 flatbed (16ft straight over the wheel wells with 4ft dovetail). It's got a queen size bed in the riser along with lots of storage, then has a rear lounge with fold up table, kitchen on the driver's side and bathroom on the curb side with the entrance door. The whole driver's side is a slide out so I gain like 2 ft of width. After seeing what you did, I might built something like this for mine! I have a walk on rated roof but with my solar panels and a/c unit there isn't much room to stand. Would be cool to at least do like a 5ft extention to the back of the roof where I don't have anything mounted so I'll end up with a 10ft long by 8.5ft wide platform. I could build a simple railing for it and would have room for a couple chairs, table and maybe even bring a grill up there! Thanks for the ideas!

Idea for deck rails: 2 long rails on the sides connected to the lower rails with lengths of wire rope. The top rails rest on the welded rails in U-shaped holders during transport. When using the rails, you lift them and put in verticals on either end that sit in sockets. Or, build sides that hang along the sides of the jeep area, and are hinged so that they can swing up to the top. Fit cross bars front and rear with hitch pins to keep them upright.

Just a small idea, since your are handy burning wire. You could weld or mount a 2" receiver somewhere on the work bench or to a leg. Weld a plate onto the male piece of the receiver (hitch post), then bolt a vise onto the plate. This would allow you to slide in the vise when needed, and stow it away when your rig is running. Vises come in handy! This build looks awesome! Just started watching you channel. What Jeep do you have? Rubber side down!

If ever need more tractiin on roof you could polyurathane varish, it and add play sand in mix,clear would give u same colour,could do bedliner when wears a bit. Side ladder be good for access as said,but you could make on hinges flip up side safety rails if wanted,plus what about couple spotlights either end pointing over and down, worklights,party lights,safety lights,security light uses. Looking good. Now you have a lot more roof space for more solar panels if you end up needing a few more. Curious as to why you chose not to paint the top of the plywood. I know it's treated but seems a coat of that black paint may help you a lot a few years down the road. Consider some sort of mechanism to easily attach some tarps for side walls when desires. You have so many options with this thing you're building. Keep up the nice work.

Should add four fold down post in the corners up top with a chain for the safety rail

Looks nice, but I would have painted the plywood before I covered it to prevent rot. Ought to make some removable or folding railing for the deck. Even short ones would give you something to tie off to and keep you from sliding your chair over the edge while you're hanging out on top or to put stuff up there when you're towing to somewhere. If you have someone on top with you, you might want to run a cross brace fore and aft and maybe gusset the corners. My first time here, gunna go look at the earlier stuff now.

spraying on some bedliner would work for the top or you can get paint that has ground up walnut shells in it for grip. Both would work probably pretty well.

Excellent video man. I’ve been looking for ideas on how to renovate my trailer for camping trips. Never occurred to me to put a second layer to be used to sit on. Awesome.

I believe that there was an Outback trailer made by Keystone that had a top deck that popped up and had screening all around it years ago. You could sleep up top or it had couch cushions all around with 360 degree viewing.

Hey that is one of the coolest things I have seen. You can put folding deck railing on the top, to make it super safe. Living Vehicle has a good design you can borrow from.

looks really cool. maybe something cool to add would be an ARB awning to each side to give you some more shade for both working on the vehicle, you can also make them into tents , but just another spot to relax

Pretty nifty man!!!! Add some amber led marker lights on the front left and right top corners and red on the rear just like campers and semi trailers have! Safety first! Should be easy to tap into existing trailer wiring!

Voiceover blew to the left channel only, background music was pretty OK, could be a tad lower on level. As for the trailer, I would have contibued the deck's rear vertical tot he ramp point to have a simple lock to hold the ramps upright without any other needs. Another option, fit large side panels that are hinged at the top, have them able to swing up to the top deck height, simple legs or arms back to the verticals to give an even larger upper deck to put up a tent/tents away from the wildlife.

As far as a deck goes on a camper then you haven't paid very much attention to the bread truck campers. A lot of those guys hang out on their roofs. Not a bad looking job looks good looking forward to seeing the finished product. Have a great day and stay safe! TQ out

Very nice! Suggestion, put the ladder on the passenger side so your away from traffic should you ever need to access the top on the side of the road, that way you will be away from traffic. I always put ratchet straps ratchets on the px side for the same reason.

I like your roof/deck. 👍 Your going to trap water between the plywood and decking. Bye bye plywood in about a year or two. Plus it’s going to leak at the plywood panel joints.
@CodeBrownProductions
@CodeBrownProductions 3 года назад
Not necessarily. There are plenty of spaces between the plywood and frame that water just drips off the side of it. The plywood is also AC3 ground contact rated so it will last for a long time. As for the joints between the plywood there were all sealed using silicone. So far it's already been through a blizzard and had standing water on it for days with not leaks from the joints.

I’m loving it 👍🏻. But if you can put ladder on both sides that will reinforce and add more rigidity. Instead of just those 4 points that’s supporting it. Otherwise, expect some twisting of that addition when you are mobile. Just my two cents 😏. But man this is an awesome build 🤙🏻.
@CodeBrownProductions

I was trying to keep it a little flexible for travel so it doesn't fall apart. But I may have to end up doing that. We will see.

Maybe a hinged ladder on the side? Rotates on the top, extends and locks near the bottom? Folds flat (ish) for travel. I've seen on the back of fire trucks.

Not a bad idea for a future project but I've already built and installed a simple flush ladder for the drivers side.
