In this video I explain one of the many ways that the GigRig can interact via MIDI with the Strymon pedals and send signals on different MIDI channels in every patch. I also explain how to set up the Strymon pedals in stomp box mode.

Many thanks for this helpful video! I am now trying to figure out how To send cc messages from G2 to the strymons. Would like to tap tempo my timeline and Mobius.

Hi Frank, This video was brilliant. Also prefect timing. I have had my pedal board with Timeline and Bigsky for quite a while all in sync when I added Mobius nothing worked. Total frustration for hours trying to figure it out. Fortunately my daughter came home from school this weekend and we went through your vedeo together. End result smile on my face and it is working properly. We also typed up a bullet point to save for future and I thought to share it with you. Again Thanks, Craig ***any modifications to the instructions please let me know.*** -Set ped als to MIDI CN 1, 2, and 3 -Unplug G2 and press and hold down 7 -Replug G2 and wait for red lights to flash -Click on Foot Switch 1-14 -Program Foot Switch so that Effects Loop buttons 1, 2, and 3 are blue (or 1, 1, 1 or 2, 2, 2 or 3, 3, 3) -G2 red lights will stop flashing after three Effects Loop buttons are chosen -Unplug G2 and replug -Click on Foot Switch 1-14 -Verify that Stompbox yellow light is OFF and red light of Foot Switch is ON -Choose petal Type/Value and press and hold Type button to save -Correspond Foot Switch chart to respective pedal number and save -Click on Stompbox button to illuminate yellow to save changes

I look forward to you follow ups. I hope you don't mind if i have any specific set up questions in the future. I have included info regarding stereo for you mobius on 8. I haven't tried it yet: Unfortunately due to the fact that G2 only has two Stereo loops, To set up the Möbius in stereo would require you to place two Strymon pedals in the Same loop. You could then however control these pedals via G2's MIDI. Functionality. There are two options for running the Möbius in two positions within the G2, You could either use G2's loop movement functionality: (You can move a single mono loop (loops 1-8) to any position within the mono signal chain Per normal preset) Simply select a normal preset, then press and hold the loop you wish to move, Then press the loop you wish the moved loop to sit before. E.g. FootSwitch 1, Loop 2 to between loops 5/6. . Select FootSwitch 1 (make sure this is in normal mode) . Then press and hold loop 2 until it begins to flash . Then press loop 6 The other way to achieve this functionality is via the Möbius' pre/post functionality, Here's a diagram to explain: image1.JPG If you didn't get the image send me your email and I will forward it to you. chirocall@gmail.com

Craig Senft thank you Craig! This is very useful. The solution with two Strymons in the same loop did occur to me too. I asked the GigRig customer support but unfortunately no answer yet. But I guess, it sounds good as it is. I'd rather use the loop move feature as I frequently like prefer chorus or phaser before drive.

Senft Chiropractic of Atlanta hi Craig. Mmmh, that is strange. The minimum delay time depends on the delay type. For example, I use a dBucket delay with 40 msec for a doubling type effect. Works fine. The tap tempo also appears to work. I am on holidays now and can't check but I see no reason for it not to work

I consider the es-8 and the gigrig to be a draw for the most part. There aren’t too many practical, everyday things things my es-8 does that the gigrig wont do just as well. This, however, is the one major advantage of the es-8. Midi programming on that thing is almost stupidly intuitive and fast which, in turn, means I’m both more likely to use it often and use it as creatively as I can. That and the ability to swap the order of your effects chain. The one area the g2 kills is gain staging. I wish my es-8 had the ability to control input and output gain as finely as the g2. The only option you’re given is a ”mixer” page for each patch that allows you to raise or lower your output gain in 3db increments. That doesn’t sound like a big deal and honestly, it usually isn’t. But there are times when +3db is just a little too intense for a given patch. Ah well...we can’t have it all, can we...

mickey_blue_eyes hi Mickey - thanks a lot for your support! I have just upped my video equipment and I am now learning how to edit video. I shot something last weekend but wasn't happy with the quality of the audio recording. I have a few more things to figure out but I am definitely planning to put up some recordings of actual music asap.

to stereo on the 3rd strymon: maybe if you can use two loops no the gigrig so one would be left channel and other right channel... realy don´t konw if it is possible but, i´m on that thought too.

A possible way to get the Mobius also in Stereo put the Timeline and Bigsky in Loop 10, and move the Mobius to loop 9. If the Gigrig can send a CC message to the pedals you could then use MIDI to bypass one of the pedals in loop 10 if it is not used. I don't own a Gigrig so I am not sure if it has sufficient MIDI control to do this but the Strymons can be bypassed in this way.
@franknguitars7671

Stratamania thank you very much for that comment! I had thought about this and I think it would work. The GigRig sends PC commands on up to three channels. The challenge starts at the fourth midi gadget - e.g. Changing presets on the Kemper. But I'll try to rewire the board like you suggested

Just ordered a G2 and thought of this same approach in planning my setup. I have yet to receive it, so I can't confirm or deny that it works, but I don't see any conceptual reason it wouldn't. I'm still on the fence about whether to put the Mobius on loop 9 or put it on an earlier loop (1-8) where its ordering can be dynamically changed, since I've heard some of its effects may work better in the dry signal chain. There are a lot of possibilities here, but also some real constraints, and I'm just hoping I don't find myself painted into a corner.

Hey there! Great video! Hope all is well, just added a strymon timeline to my g2, Am struggling with midi generally but My immediate problem for this weekend gigs is - When Im In a patch that already has timeline delay on it and then hit stomp box mode to add a phaser etc it changes the timeline settings and triggers midi craziness! My stomp modes are on 10,11,12,13 Do I just turn midi off (ring button) off on those patches? Many thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for uploading this guide! One question - I see that on some of your G2 presets not all 3 of the Strymons have a patch name on their screens. Does the G2 send a bypass signal to them on those presets to bypass them or have they been configured somehow else?
@franknguitars7671
@franknguitars7671 3 года назад
Sorry for the late answer. I have been away for a while. The MIDI was done here in a rather simple way. Each preset in the G2 corresponds to one PC message. This PC slot in the Strymon pedals is manually configured meaning that if I want chorus with a certain setting on presets 3, 9 and 13 I need to dial it in three times (which is not very convenient). With better programmability and MIDI mapping one has one chorus patch on the Strymon and the switcher just triggers that preset. The G3 is able to do that. On the patches without a name, I had just deleted the NAME field but they still had the pedal on with some setting, just the loop was off. With a more advance switcher, you can send a bypass signal to the Strymons, but this is not how it was done here.

I can't get my G2 to go into MIDI setup mode. The manual says you just press and hold FS7 then phase. That doesn't work. Then I tried powering up while holding FS7 down. That didn't work. I did get all the red lights above the foot switches to flash, but they were slow and steady, not rapid. I have no clue what's going on. Just wondering if you could help.

I have a q, if i use strymon in MIDI, it still has to be connected with Jack into one of 10 loops or IT can work just with midi ? Im asking cuz if its possibile ill be able to use 13 pedals instead of 10 :)
@franknguitars7671
@franknguitars7671 5 лет назад
I believe that you can just use MIDI. The Strymons will then be in the signal path all the time ... which probably is not harmful since their audio is high quality. You only have to figure out the MIDI signal that sends them into bypass because otherwise they will also be on when you don‘t want them to. I have never tried that but I am pretty sure that it is possible.

@@franknguitars7671 I have a similar questions, I wish I could use all my strymon pedals plugged into the same channel, also in order to save some channels and be able to use more pedals. In that case I would need to be able to switch off the pedals I do not want to use depending on the preset. Is there a possibility of doing that? Thx
@franknguitars7671
@franknguitars7671 3 года назад
Yes you can. You can send CC signal #102 to the Strymon pedals to set them into bypass. The MIDI in G2 is a bit basic, but in the new G3 it seems to be much more powerful in that respect.
@gatysm
@gatysm 3 года назад
@@franknguitars7671 Thx, you are right, I saw it in the manual. for the G3 it might be very easy, for the G2 they adviced me to put the mix/level knob on the pedal set to zero. Then control it via MIDI PC message
@JohnPriceJNPMusic

How do you set the patches on the strymon pedals? Say GigRig preset 1 I want preset 5 on the timeline and preset 10 on the bigsky. Then GigRig preset 2 I want preset 12 on the Timeline and preset 2 BigSky....How do I tell the GigRig to do this? Or do I map it inside the Strymon pedals....
@franknguitars7671
@franknguitars7671 5 лет назад
I am afraid this is where the G2 MIDI functionality falls somewhat short - the MIDI mapping is 1:1 that means when you press button number three on the G2 and you fire on the MIDI channel that the BigSky (or any other of the Strymons for that matter) is listening, then it will recall preset number 3 on the BigSky. If you press Bank 2 button number 4 it will be preset 18 (14 from the first bank plus number 4 on the second). If you want the same reverb in five different patches, I am afraid that you have to dial it in in all five patches separately. Now, when you want to change it, you need to change it in all five places. Not very convenient. That is why, for my "playing out" pedal board, it was not practical in the end and I went with simpler pedals despite the fact that the Strymons kick all kind of a*s sound wise. I guess it is time for a makeover of the G2 here. The OneControl Crocodile Trail looper for example has the same limitation but it can be hooked up to to the Croc Eye MIDI converter that can translate one MIDI command from the CrocTail to a bunch of PC and CC MIDI commands on multiple channels. In this way everything can be nicely mapped onto the Strymon presets. There is no such device for the G2. I made the GigRig support aware of this and they said that they would look into it, but I guess we have to wait for better MIDI support with the G2.

Hi Frank, I hope all is well. I have 2 question for you. All three strymons mdi connected, all on different channels 1,2 3, the mobius has 5 different stomp box settings on Gigrig foot switches, when switching foot switch stompbox ie #8 to #9 you loose effect on #8 to effect #9? (Both do not stay on from mobius)? I assume that would make sense that you can't have multiple mobius effect at same time. The second question is that I have Bigsky set up with an expression pedal to control the decay. Why do I loose the extended decay on BS when I hit a footswitch to change mobius stomp box?
@franknguitars7671
@franknguitars7671 7 лет назад
Craig Senft hi Craig. Thanks for the question! On the first one - yes, there is always only one Möbius effect active. Say, I have a normal preset which features a Mobius phaser and I hit my stompbox button 9 that is set to a Mobius chorus - it will change the phaser to a chorus and the phaser is gone. I am quite ok with that as I do not normally layer several modulation effects. For the expression pedal question I am no expert. I assume that you would need the spillover function of the GigRig but I have not had an opportunity to explore that yet. Happy pedaling!
